  • Over the past few years so many people have asked for a more in depth video of our rabbit butchery method especially the "Bop and Bleed' method. There's more than one way to skin a rabbit but when it comes to taste the bop and bleed is far superior. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions feel free to contact us. Be sure to checkout our website omnivoresquivers.com to see all of Allison's recipes and spice mixes.

    It would really bug the heck out of me if I took the trouble to put a video like this together, and a bunch of people showed up to complain about how they personally view rabbits as pets and don't like the idea of killing and eating them. So I applaud you all the more for doing this work, and thank you for it. You're providing an educational opportunity that isn't easy to come by anymore.

    One of the best butcher and cleaning videos I’ve seen so far. While I do think the stunning part was a bit sloppy, I understand why you have to bleed them out, or their meat would be gross and go to waste. I myself take care of rabbits, but even though I don’t eat them, I really respect the natural way homestead meat is produced.

    For those of you in the comments who don’t know what their talking about. I hunted some rabbits with a 22 rifle and we had shot one in the head and half of his head came off, unfortunately the rabbit was still alive and was breathing really heavy so we tried using a sharp knife to quickly kill it and it squirmed when we tried and ended up putting another bullet in it. What she did here was actually the most humane way of putting the lights out on any animal and that’s a proven fact

    I’ve raise meat rabbits and have for over 10 years and I do agree with these comments. I don’t think you did that quite right; there are more painless dispatch methods. When I was younger my dad did the “club” method, he said you are supposed to hit them hard enough to shader the scull and send fragments into the brain so that it acts the same as a bullet, not just a stun. He never had rabbits kick like this one. The other option is a BB gun (what I use now) relatively cheep and assured to be painless and quick.

      How is that possible? Is she truly vegan?
      Well, she only opposes and is protesting the way animals are treated at inhuman farms that don’t let the chickens out of their cages. She knows our chickens are taken care of very well.
      Also, she knows that the rabbit meat is more sustainable and better for the environment - even the rabbit pellets are beneficial to growing plants because they are used as fertilizer. She also opposes the way animals are slaughtered by big business. We don’t process our meat that way.

    • @vincentvilay1407
      @vincentvilay1407 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Blood loss and shock mostly. If a lot of blood is left in the meat, it'll have a stronger taste. And if the animal is in a lot of shock and a lot of adrenaline and hormones are pumping through its body, it can also affect its taste.

    I do see the point with the long knife during bleeding, but would it not be way more handy with a smaller one for the rest of the procedure? And I do hope you follow up with a video on how you prepare your dinner with this meat?

      You can absolutely use a shorter blade once you’ve bled your rabbit. I’ve always just used the one knife so it’s what I’m more comfortable with. We do have another video already out showing how I break them down and package, and I post several recipes on our website omnivoresquivers.com.

    Do you brine first only if cooking right away or do you brine and then freeze? What salt/water ratio do you use for your brine? The video is very helpful as we are looking into getting into meat rabbits to go along with our chickens. What breed do you have here? I've read New Zeland is probably the best for beginners like us as they have a good bone to meat ratio and also have high litter counts....love the info!

    • @maribelmeza4494
      @maribelmeza4494 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same thing; the brine info and process.
      We also started out with chickens and 6 months later grew into rabbits.
      We have a Californian female (doe) and a male (buck) that’s a New Zealand.
      The doe had 2 litters before we had to quit for the summer, as we live in Texas and it gets quite hot and humid.
      The kits we processed were, as she said about 4 weeks older than I wanted (at 16 weeks), and therefore much heavier, so it was a bit of a challenge.
      We kept a doe and a buck from their second litter and we are expecting both of the does to give birth on 12-1-22. We mated both of them with the “dad” as siblings can’t be mates with each other. We are very excited for another season of growing them.
      Good luck with yours!

    No problem with eating rabbits. But, this just isn't a clean way to kill them. I disagree that the smack is stunning them enough to mitigate the suffering. Seems to me that, by investing in a bolt gun, you could do this a lot more humanely.

    I really want to homestead and grow/raise my own food but I don’t think I could handle the butchering. It’s just a huge ethical conflict that I struggle with. Seeing things being killled makes me super quesy. I think things should be done as painless and humanley as possible. Without a doubt, animals raised on small farms are treated far more humanely than those in industrial farming and you know what you are putting into your body as well.
