I personally use the macho Mann with a Hawaii shirt to express myself, but as some may know soldier and pyro currently don’t have a Hawaii shirt cosmetic. So instead of making a big deal out of it, I went with a different direction and made two detective sets for these classes. The point being that Restrictions spark creativity.

There used to be a time where "Furry Head" Cosmetics were based on Shoulder Animals Cosmetics the mercenaries had, but now it's just Furry Galore where anyone can be anything. There's no nod to existing cosmetics or little to no reference to actual TF2 content. Pain.
The bird heads all had funny explanations behind their existence too, like medic performing a science experiment gone wrong, or merasmus cursing heavy, soldier and sniper that night. They tried to play it off the characters they were designing the items for.

One of the things that boggles my mind about the modern state of gaming is the default assumption that everyone seems to be under that when you make or are able to customize a character, you're only interested in inserting yourself in the video game. Much like how Zesty has the engineer as a cowboy because he likes cowboys, I have the bomber's jacket for engineer because I like WWII pilot aesthetic (granted, I would like to get my pilot's license, but I will never be a WWII bomber). I don't want to play as myself in BG3 or Starfield, I'm boring. I want to play as someone who fits in those worlds that may have a couple of similarities to me. But, there is definitely a certain kind of person that can't stand not seeing themselves not inserted in whatever they are watching or playing. (They're called narcissists.)
Yeah this applies to the whole current Role-play genre in general (both videogames and tabletop). Instead of living vicariously in the shoes of another person and experiencing a life beyond our own, most people would rather stick with some lazy uninventive self-insert that has no real functionality in a setting, which would be fine if 99% of those characters weren't unbearably metaironic all the time or are just projections of their pathological fetish complexes.

Pyro as a character is just actually insane and in lore from meet the team it's horrifying. So why didn't there a cosmetic that shows that for him? Like give his a cosmetic that makes them scary, like an example for me is the duck gas mask based off those creepy Disney gas masks. That I feel is what makes the Pyro scary, it's an animal goofy haha mask but with deeper meaning it can be made an idea to be feared. (Maybe the duck mask isn't the best example but you get my point)

The masks tried to look friendly by looking like a duck or an animal, but it was still uncanny and rather terrifying despite what it was trying to achieve. A massive portion of tf2s current fan base probably never knew tf2 before it was like.. ‘this’, so I think they’re largely unphased and happy to let it slide. People who started 10 years ago are considered veterans but even 10 years ago tf2 had already lost its true original aesthetic by that point. I remember when the croc-o-style set or whatever it’s called was first released for the sniper and instantly noticing how weird and glossy it looked

Going back to an argument/statement you made that applies here: If you want to have your own quirky getup or models in game to reflect yourself, install a mod so that you can enjoy it without making everyone else kneel over for an unfitting addition to the game that everyone has to see.

Yea we do not see people running around with the Flamedeer. Clearly the only reason this is added to the game is the money made from people with no care about TF2 or anything but the fur. Like the Flamedeer makes sense and actually fits in with the game unpainted. Lime scouts are no joke a pain.

I think the funniest thing about this entire situation was the massive uptick in smear campaigns after Zesty's pretty reasonable opinions on this cosmetic. We see folks start combing through hours of his month old streams to try and find a single detail to "own him" for clout We see folks fabricate "death threats" and and then use that as leverage to (ironically enough) harass Zesty and his fans (rather than contact the authorities for a supposed federal crime) We see folks start straight up slander Zesty's character and actions with lies with every buzzword in the book to rally people against him We see folks start harassing anyone who agrees with Zesty, slandering their character and taking measures to passive aggressively attack them as much as they can on multiple platforms We see folks intentionally baiting out reactions on workshop submissions, so they may direct all the blame towards a single person. And that's not even the end of it. All of this senseless outrage for what? I said it on one of your streams, Zesty, but I gotta repeat it here. I am a furry, but I never go out of my way to tell people I am one at all. It's just a part of me I keep on a need to know basis. The kind of people who would wear a cosmetic like this would absolutely color it to be the same color as their sona and wear it on every loadout to loudly and proudly tell everyone in the server "IM A FURRY!!!", which is just wrong on so many levels to me. Especially when I wanna keep away from that stuff as much as possible, having it infest other things I partake in without my consent feels mildly violating. Furry skins in Fortnite, furry skins in Call of Duty, furry skins in TF2, they just won't stop (Fortnite is the worst with the sheer number of kids playing it). And if I say I'm uncomfortable with it, the default responses are always 1. "You don't have to buy the skins and cosmetics!" Indeed, I don't, but that doesn't mean I can't stop seeing them 2. "They're just expressing themselves!" Isn't a naked pervert running around the city also expressing themself? To me, they're the same thing. You go out in public spaces, online and IRL with it to express it to others. Man I wish valve would look at some of the older cosmetics/warpaints. They look so GOOD in comparison to some of the crap we got on the workshop right now.
I think there should be three rules that cosmetics need for them to be acceptable. 1. Does it fit the intended art style? 2. Does it fit the era that the game takes place? 3. Is it something that the class would actually wear? As long as those three rules apply it should be acceptable to me. Also regarding artstyle. Valve did change their way of styling TF2 but it changed so slightly that you barely notice it. The biggest change that I can think of is how they design glass on their models... and that they used more lower quality textures in mercenary park for some reason...
sadly enough we are in a time where especially the sexual preference of identity is being highly elevated as flagpole for identity as a whole, while it should really not be of public concern. People should be into who or whatever they want, but noone wants to have it told publically, read in their steam profiles etc. Sexualization, fetish embracement and gender obsession are not just in online spheres missing the mark of free expression, but are being overly stressed and taken as a core value to seperate oneself from others. Worst of all, even in academic circles this behavior and thinking is indoctrinated; it is my current reality. The matter of sexual identity should simply neither be public affair nor be shoved down your throat like many wish their dicks would be. It all can have an appeal but noone needs to know you're into that stuff, except a person who is willing to indulge or help you enjoy yourself further in those spaces. Unfitting and overly fetishy in nature, it already has it's furry nieche filled - and half the model is already ingame - as "pyro the flamedeer", which at least manages to stick to the leather mask concept more (notice at the level of the jaw joint the fur / floof shape in a full leather helmet). Eyes, snout and filters are ripped from the flamedeer very obviously; the ears are flat and seem 2d, clipping horribly with any hat (remember, hat based game?) and there are better canine alternatives ingame, which do not screw the cartoony artstyle over - k9 mane and foxy head prize.

Exactly. Stop projecting yourself and YOUR interests onto tf2, or any game. What’s more conducive to your love for tf2? The established characters and setting, the atmosphere the game has? Or because it’s a painting game where you can throw your shit at the characters to see if you can make yourself? Cosmetics like this exist because some people choose the latter. Tf2 only recently became a tacky art contest to see what stupid irrelevant shit can be added to the game. It used to prioritize making the world feel more real and lively. This is a deeper problem with the culture rn. Everyone is so motivated by what they want and everything needs to be specifically tailored to them. They don’t respect the art, the soul something has outside of your own touches to it. Tf2 is a masterpiece. It was made by a couple guys that really wanted to make something great, and they did. We disrespect the wonderful game they made by trying to make it all about what we want at the expense of what WOULD be in it. Hats like this are literally a disgrace to tf2.
I have a super goofy pyro loadout because i feel like its my way of expressing myself. I can understand why people would want more cosmetcis like these but i feel like it doesnt fit on tf2 it would be much better if it was clear the pyro was wearing a wolfs head kinda like that one cosmetic we already have
As far as I'm concerned, most "animal head" cosmetics usually aren't that anthropomorphized and definitely looked more animalistic (and I think drew from the shoulder pets like with owl Sniper and the Pootis bird). I think this helps play more into inhuman, uncanny, and bestial aspect of beast-man hybrids, which I can appreciate more than cosmetics that fail to seem very intimidating or uncanny just because they look a bit *too* anthro rather than monstruous. As for animal heads on Pyro specifically, I think they could play way more into the "fire" aspect of the *Pyro* (shocker), or just scarier non-mammalian animals in general. For instance, I'm surprised why Pyro doesn't already have a fire ant cosmetic where the head is just straight up an ant head without much stylization (so it stays animalistic) beyond keeping the shading in line with the rest of the game (ants actually look terrifying under a microscope but I don't think those extra tiny details fit TF2 either). Parasitic wasps might also be another possible inspiration point, and hell, they might do the "puff and sting" bit better than that one bee-themed set on the workshop a while back, because unlike bees often being rendered cutesy, ants and wasps are rarely seen as anything beyond terrifying or creepy. The topic of insect and arachnid-themed Halloween sets also makes me think a cockroach-themed set could theoretically work well, too.
Adding more fuel to fire is what I'd like to say. I hope this item does not get added. References like Alien, Star-Wars in TF2 fit in a certain context, they were added in a community alien invasion update. Anime references with certain taste and style can work like the chaser set is a reference to Lupin the third but can't go overboard like adding super sayian hair to scout or something.

Take a look at modern furry art and then look at the existing animal cosmetics for tf2 and it becomes evident why the existing cosmetics work and why many in the workshop dont. You look at the eyes of a furry character and you can see the human soul there, you look at the eyes of an actual animal and you do not see that, you see something beastial. The bird heads, the bear head for heavy, poopy doe for soldier and vampyro for pyro are good examples of this. This same logic also applies to how TF2 animal cosmetics dont give up animal facial features in order to make human expressions like with furry art. We can also notice from modern furry art that they will often diminish or give up certain animal features in order to conform more to the human shape such as shrinking down a snout/changing the shape of the head or removing a hump to allow the character to properly stand upright like a human would or switching out flippers for fingers and opposable thumbs. The TF2 animal cosmetics dont tend to do this and often embrace the awkward combination of mann and animal such as with the manngaroo set for sniper. Much of it looks awkward on sniper's mostly human body and comes across as the unholy combination of mann and beast rather than some stable anthro species. When I see the heavy walking around with a bear head I wonder if hes going to do something rational or just start sniffing the air and growling at people. When I see a soldier with the monkey head I question weather he will pick up his rocket launcher to attack me or if hes going to fling poo at me instead. When I see the manngaroo I question how sniper manages to walk around with such big feet or how he adjusts to the world when he suddenly has a big ass kangaroo snout in the way. When I see bird people all I can hear from them is comments about eating worms or laying eggs in my mouth. When I am shown a picture of a furry the only question I have is how much money they spend a year on shampoo. Animals cosmetics can and do work in TF2, but they need to be done correctly and in line with what we already have, think sicience fiction/horror and not this uwu owo cuteness overload nonsense.

There is an inability to compromise here. Team Fortress 2 has lost it’s aesthetic identity. That’s splits people into two major groups: those who want to preserve it, and those who want to accept it. The compromise for peace here would be that, those who create content non-identifiable with TF2’s aesthetic, must engineer with coherence and appreciation for TF2’s Identity. So we must define the identify- the lexicon of Team Fortress, and agree on that fiction as our criteria for judgement.
Yeah, I do believe that the best part of TF2 cosmetics is finding stuff that works for you that you like to wear. I alternate between two styles with my classes, one being a fancy dress uniform type look that's early 1900s-esque, and the other being flat-out silly mode. My most prized possession is a simple no frills Tsar Platinum for Heavy cause i like having a big fancy coat for the fella that covers his arms. Couldn't care less about it being a JoJo reference, I just like the coat. That and pairing it up with the ushanka and the Chicken Kiev for ultimate Soviet Pootis is one of the best cosmetic combos out there, right up there with Captain Lung Cancer Demoman.

The sadest thing is that, you're right. Things should be added based on the context of the game. But when you give freedom for people to do, pretty much wathever they want, they will do anything, and it should be the job of the developers to pick wisely pic wich items get in to the game baseed on "the game's vision". But it's clear over the years that they themselfs stoped careing about those values. Putting the community, on what i think, its is a unrealistic spot of responsability over this game.
things like this are better kept as mods. with vscript making model and cosmetic changes possible for official valve servers, there's no reason to try sneaking artstyle and theme breaking cosmetics into the game. just mod it in.

A fox/wolf head, while really not fitting in the game anymore and kinda being oversaturated within the community workshop and currentl item pool, is quite tame and not really anything fetish-wise. It can represent one, but that's kind of a stretch and only looking at one side of what it means. TL;DR: I agree with most of the video and that it shouldn't be in the game, but the use of the word fetish doesn't properly apply.
It’s crazy to me how Fortnite went from PvE to Battle Royale to basically roblox. You can play guitar hero with Spider-Man, Peter Griffin, Indiana Jones, and Travis Scott in your band.
I used to use alot of these goofy cosmetics just to be funny but honestly looking back at it most of it was cringe. Also watching your videos on keeping the artstyle of the game and keeping these cosmetics that don't fit into the artstyle of TF2 out of TF2, really made me think about the importance of protecting the integraty of the games artstyle. Keep doing what you do man.
Pyro has far too many furry cosmetics as is and it's attempting to spead to other classes. The entire premise of the animal cosmetics initially was like "hey merasmus did some shit and made the mercs turn into the animals theyre most similarly alligned to" so adding blatant fursuit stuff is 20 steps too far.
The Jojo set at least, in my opinion, is an exception, simply because it is cool even if you don't understand the reference. Someone who has never even heard of Jojo can add the Tzar Platinum to their loadout simply because it looks good with other cosmetic itens and doesn't look out of place at all. I draw the line at the Batman set tho
@@azizabdul8914 Not true. The Tzar Platinum has Team Colors on the sleeves and around the neck, which is where the team colors on the base Heavy model are anyway. The rest of it is also team colored albeit heavily muted, being either a reddish-brown or a bluish-black.
pyro, kinda like demoman, has a some what narrow scope of item themes at its disposal for cosmetic sets. either way i don't think leaning into the "omg furry pyro main" is going to help this issue. the themes thing for pyro and demo is just my opinion.
to be fair *everyone* playing since jungle inferno has at least 2 mental illnesses, except for pyro mains they have at least 15(including being a furry)

Both Mario and Jojo hats not only don't fit the game contextually, but also chronologically. Taking TF2's timeframe of 60's/70's into account, neither series would come out for another 10+ years.
Eh... by this logic, the Team Captain wouldn't make sense in the game either, despite arguably being one of the most well-executed reference items. It looks good on its own and doesn't alienate people who haven't engaged with the source material.

I do find it interesting a lot of things that make it an appropriate reference cross over with the content of Jojos. The hat also is a Gakuran which we really didn't have in the game tied to both official institutions and cultural styles that existed from the 50's onward. Sure it has the silly badges on one of it's styles but I'd still argue that it covers a bunch of themes that fit nicely into tf2 without explicitly being the jojo hat
I'm a furry myself, but even I wouldn't want this in the game. I think the Head Prize was already really pushing it, I felt like that cosmetic only really fit maybe Heavy, Soldier, and perhaps Sniper with the whole Huntsman getup, being a hunter and stuff. They are the ones that seem like the types to hunt an animal and then fashion a "prize" out of its head as a hood of sorts. I will say, I wouldn't call this fetishistic, furry does not equal fetish, this is on the same level as Buggs Bunny. But I also wouldn't want Buggs Bunny in TF2. This shit belongs in Fortnite where there basically is no art style or characterization, it's all just "Insert Personality Here" characters, but TF2 isn't like that and it really feels like a big middle finger to the characters and world I semi grew up with. Pyro would never be a furry, even his Valve-sanctioned "animal version" halloween cosmetic is a dragon, something fire themed, it makes actual sense for the Pyro to dress up as a fire-breathing beast during Halloween. It doesn't make sense for him to be whatever species this is meant to represent. This would of been cool if it was scary for halloween. Out of all the mercs, pyro turning into a werewolf would be fitting. Those creatures are made to look cute on the internet (for some reason) but in real folklore those things are scary, huge, powerful and downright creepy. Often seen as tall boney monsters; which fits pyros unsettling vibe he has. This all goes out the window when you look at this. A cute doggo. He should have large thin sharp fangs with a long dangling tongue that drips blood. The eye holes should be glowing to mimic the reflective eyes they have in the forest and the fur tufts should be wild and matted. Bits of the mask should be ripped and torn as the fur and bone structure is tearing through it. Think the voodoo undead soul but for a beast. Too many ppl think pyro is cute and when they try to pet her, she just turns on them and burns them in seconds. She is dangerous; why are we trying to make it cute? It isn't cute! It's a psychopath! I just wish mfs would stay grounded in the reality of the game. CS weapon skins, hell even the gloves and operators, are grounded in the reality of CS. It's realistic, of course I can't answer that a real world FBI, GIGN, SAS, etc would carry around a Dragon Lore but I can't say they wouldn't. That's how customization stuff should be. *I can and cannot say the character would use it.* The bird cosmetics of TF2 are a perfect example, it's grounded in TF2's silly world. Fortnite wasn't always like that. It is actually crazy how many of the problems Fortnite has parallel that of TF2. Refusal to split casual and competitive (Fortnite keeps adding stupid casual shit to competitive, while TF2 does the inverse and tries to make casual competitive, it ruins the game) and degrading art styles from all the slop that gets added. Im making a video now on the degradation of Fortnite's artstyle, using excerpts from this video despite it being about TF2, just because of how closely the two games are linked.
The thing about games like TF2 or Fortnite is that they're free. Free games have to find a way to make revenue somehow, and that is through cosmetics usually. The reason Fortnite must "bend its knee" to different things is because by having cosmetics that can actually make players excited or intrigued, they're doing what gives them revenue best. By making designs that the player base can understand and connect with, they're more likely to make money. Sure, there's people like you who only like things that go with the aesthetic of the game, but there are plenty of others who don't care, and just like when a game has wacky or weird cosmetics that they can relate with. You don't need to play the game. Go play Elden Ring if it makes you so happy.

I personally use the macho Mann with a Hawaii shirt to express myself, but as some may know soldier and pyro currently don’t have a Hawaii shirt cosmetic. So instead of making a big deal out of it, I went with a different direction and made two detective sets for these classes.

There used to be a time where "Furry Head" Cosmetics were based on Shoulder Animals Cosmetics the mercenaries had, but now it's just Furry Galore where anyone can be anything. There's no nod to existing cosmetics or little to no reference to actual TF2 content.

One of the things that boggles my mind about the modern state of gaming is the default assumption that everyone seems to be under that when you make or are able to customize a character, you're only interested in inserting yourself in the video game. Much like how Zesty has the engineer as a cowboy because he likes cowboys, I have the bomber's jacket for engineer because I like WWII pilot aesthetic (granted, I would like to get my pilot's license, but I will never be a WWII bomber). I don't want to play as myself in BG3 or Starfield, I'm boring. I want to play as someone who fits in those worlds that may have a couple of similarities to me. But, there is definitely a certain kind of person that can't stand not seeing themselves not inserted in whatever they are watching or playing.

Yeah this applies to the whole current Role-play genre in general (both videogames and tabletop). Instead of living vicariously in the shoes of another person and experiencing a life beyond our own, most people would rather stick with some lazy uninventive self-insert that has no real functionality in a setting, which would be fine if 99% of those characters weren't unbearably metaironic all the time or are just projections of their pathological fetish complexes.

Pyro as a character is just actually insane and in lore from meet the team it's horrifying. So why didn't there a cosmetic that shows that for him? Like give his a cosmetic that makes them scary, like an example for me is the duck gas mask based off those creepy Disney gas masks. The masks tried to look friendly by looking like a duck or an animal, but it was still uncanny and rather terrifying despite what it was trying to achieve. A massive portion of tf2s current fan base probably never knew tf2 before it was like.. ‘this’, so I think they’re largely unphased and happy to let it slide. People who started 10 years ago are considered veterans but even 10 years ago tf2 had already lost its true original aesthetic by that point. I think the funniest thing about this entire situation was the massive uptick in smear campaigns after Zesty's pretty reasonable opinions on this cosmetic.
We see folks start combing through hours of his month old streams to try and find a single detail to "own him" for clout
We see folks fabricate "death threats" and and then use that as leverage to (ironically enough) harass Zesty and his fans (rather than contact the authorities for a supposed federal crime)
We see folks start straight up slander Zesty's character and actions with lies with every buzzword in the book to rally people against him

I said it on one of your streams, Zesty, but I gotta repeat it here. I am a furry, but I never go out of my way to tell people I am one at all. It's just a part of me I keep on a need to know basis. The kind of people who would wear a cosmetic like this would absolutely color it to be the same color as their sona and wear it on every loadout to loudly and proudly tell everyone in the server "IM A FURRY!!!", which is just wrong on so many levels to me.
Especially when I wanna keep away from that stuff as much as possible, having it infest other things I partake in without my consent feels mildly violating. Furry skins in Fortnite, furry skins in Call of Duty, furry skins in TF2, they just won't stop (Fortnite is the worst with the sheer number of kids playing it). First off, it is, can't argue against that. Secondly, even if it isn't sexual 100% of the time, it (understandably) makes normal people uncomfortable. So forcing others to witness you "express yourself" is creepy at best and exploitative at worst

I think there should be three rules that cosmetics need for them to be acceptable.
1. Does it fit the intended art style? 2. Does it fit the era that the game takes place? 3. Is it something that the class would actually wear?
As long as those three rules apply it should be acceptable to me.
Also regarding artstyle. Valve did change their way of styling TF2 but it changed so slightly that you barely notice it. The biggest change that I can think of is how they design glass on their models... and that they used more lower quality textures in mercenary park for some reason...
sadly enough we are in a time where especially the sexual preference of identity is being highly elevated as flagpole for identity as a whole, while it should really not be of public concern. People should be into who or whatever they want, but noone wants to have it told publically, read in their steam profiles etc. Sexualization, fetish embracement and gender obsession are not just in online spheres missing the mark of free expression, but are being overly stressed and taken as a core value to seperate oneself from others. Worst of all, even in academic circles this behavior and thinking is indoctrinated; it is my current reality. The matter of sexual identity should simply neither be public affair nor be shoved down your throat like many wish their dicks would be. Noone cares about your preferences and fetishes or kinks, be it 2d muscle mommies or anthro art. It all can have an appeal but noone needs to know you're into that stuff, except a person who is willing to indulge or help you enjoy yourself further in those spaces. Is decency too much to ask for this century? As for the cosmetic itself, an unneded, low quality rehash of already present concepts. Unfitting and overly fetishy in nature, it already has it's furry nieche filled - and half the model is already ingame - as "pyro the flamedeer", which at least manages to stick to the leather mask concept more (notice at the level of the jaw joint the fur / floof shape in a full leather helmet). Eyes, snout and filters are ripped from the flamedeer very obviously; the ears are flat and seem 2d, clipping horribly with any hat (remember, hat based game?) and there are better canine alternatives ingame, which do not screw the cartoony artstyle over - k9 mane and foxy head prize.

Cosmetics like this exist because some people choose the latter. Tf2 only recently became a tacky art contest to see what stupid irrelevant shit can be added to the game. It used to prioritize making the world feel more real and lively.
This is a deeper problem with the culture rn. Everyone is so motivated by what they want and everything needs to be specifically tailored to them. They don’t respect the art, the soul something has outside of your own touches to it. Tf2 is a masterpiece. It was made by a couple guys that really wanted to make something great, and they did.

As far as I'm concerned, most "animal head" cosmetics usually aren't that anthropomorphized and definitely looked more animalistic (and I think drew from the shoulder pets like with owl Sniper and the Pootis bird). I think this helps play more into inhuman, uncanny, and bestial aspect of beast-man hybrids, which I can appreciate more than cosmetics that fail to seem very intimidating or uncanny just because they look a bit *too* anthro rather than monstruous.
As for animal heads on Pyro specifically, I think they could play way more into the "fire" aspect of the *Pyro* (shocker), or just scarier non-mammalian animals in general. For instance, I'm surprised why Pyro doesn't already have a fire ant cosmetic where the head is just straight up an ant head without much stylization (so it stays animalistic) beyond keeping the shading in line with the rest of the game (ants actually look terrifying under a microscope but I don't think those extra tiny details fit TF2 either). Parasitic wasps might also be another possible inspiration point, and hell, they might do the "puff and sting" bit better than that one bee-themed set on the workshop a while back, because unlike bees often being rendered cutesy, ants and wasps are rarely seen as anything beyond terrifying or creepy. The topic of insect and arachnid-themed Halloween sets also makes me think a cockroach-themed set could theoretically work well, too.
Adding more fuel to fire is what I'd like to say. I hope this item does not get added. References like Alien, Star-Wars in TF2 fit in a certain context, they were added in a community alien invasion update. Anime references with certain taste and style can work like the chaser set is a reference to Lupin the third but can't go overboard like adding super sayian hair to scout or something.

Take a look at modern furry art and then look at the existing animal cosmetics for tf2 and it becomes evident why the existing cosmetics work and why many in the workshop dont. You look at the eyes of a furry character and you can see the human soul there, you look at the eyes of an actual animal and you do not see that, you see something beastial. The bird heads, the bear head for heavy, poopy doe for soldier and vampyro for pyro are good examples of this. This same logic also applies to how TF2 animal cosmetics dont give up animal facial features in order to make human expressions like with furry art.
We can also notice from modern furry art that they will often diminish or give up certain animal features in order to conform more to the human shape such as shrinking down a snout/changing the shape of the head or removing a hump to allow the character to properly stand upright like a human would or switching out flippers for fingers and opposable thumbs. The TF2 animal cosmetics dont tend to do this and often embrace the awkward combination of mann and animal such as with the manngaroo set for sniper. Much of it looks awkward on sniper's mostly human body and comes across as the unholy combination of mann and beast rather than some stable anthro species.
When I see the heavy walking around with a bear head I wonder if hes going to do something rational or just start sniffing the air and growling at people. When I see a soldier with the monkey head I question weather he will pick up his rocket launcher to attack me or if hes going to fling poo at me instead. When I see the manngaroo I question how sniper manages to walk around with such big feet or how he adjusts to the world when he suddenly has a big ass kangaroo snout in the way. When I see bird people all I can hear from them is comments about eating worms or laying eggs in my mouth. When I am shown a picture of a furry the only question I have is how much money they spend a year on shampoo.
Animals cosmetics can and do work in TF2, but they need to be done correctly and in line with what we already have, think sicience fiction/horror and not this uwu owo cuteness overload nonsense.

There is an inability to compromise here. Team Fortress 2 has lost it’s aesthetic identity. That’s splits people into two major groups: those who want to preserve it, and those who want to accept it. The compromise for peace here would be that, those who create content non-identifiable with TF2’s aesthetic, must engineer with coherence and appreciation for TF2’s Identity. So we must define the identify- the lexicon of Team Fortress, and agree on that fiction as our criteria for judgement.
TF2 aesthetic drifted from vintage "60s American spy movie", to "cheesy B-Movie".
Yeah, I do believe that the best part of TF2 cosmetics is finding stuff that works for you that you like to wear. I alternate between two styles with my classes, one being a fancy dress uniform type look that's early 1900s-esque, and the other being flat-out silly mode.
My most prized possession is a simple no frills Tsar Platinum for Heavy cause i like having a big fancy coat for the fella that covers his arms. Couldn't care less about it being a JoJo reference, I just like the coat. That and pairing it up with the ushanka and the Chicken Kiev for ultimate Soviet Pootis is one of the best cosmetic combos out there, right up there with Captain Lung Cancer Demoman.

The sadest thing is that, you're right. Things should be added based on the context of the game. But when you give freedom for people to do, pretty much wathever they want, they will do anything, and it should be the job of the developers to pick wisely pic wich items get in to the game baseed on "the game's vision". But it's clear over the years that they themselfs stoped careing about those values. Putting the community, on what i think, its is a unrealistic spot of responsability over this game.
things like this are better kept as mods. with vscript making model and cosmetic changes possible for official valve servers, there's no reason to try sneaking artstyle and theme breaking cosmetics into the game. just mod it in.

Ok, I agree that it's furry bait, but I don't think it's fetish bait. Something like a giant barefoot cosmetic would be fetish bait. A fox/wolf head, while really not fitting in the game anymore and kinda being oversaturated within the community workshop and currentl item pool, is quite tame and not really anything fetish-wise. It can represent one, but that's kind of a stretch and only looking at one side of what it means.
TL;DR: I agree with most of the video and that it shouldn't be in the game, but the use of the word fetish doesn't properly apply.

It’s crazy to me how Fortnite went from PvE to Battle Royale to basically roblox. You can play guitar hero with Spider-Man, Peter Griffin, Indiana Jones, and Travis Scott in your band.
I used to use alot of these goofy cosmetics just to be funny but honestly looking back at it most of it was cringe. Also watching your videos on keeping the artstyle of the game and keeping these cosmetics that don't fit into the artstyle of TF2 out of TF2, really made me think about the importance of protecting the integraty of the games artstyle. Keep doing what you do man.

Pyro has far too many furry cosmetics as is and it's attempting to spead to other classes. The entire premise of the animal cosmetics initially was like "hey merasmus did some shit and made the mercs turn into the animals theyre most similarly alligned to" so adding blatant fursuit stuff is 20 steps too far.
The Jojo set at least, in my opinion, is an exception, simply because it is cool even if you don't understand the reference. Someone who has never even heard of Jojo can add the Tzar Platinum to their loadout simply because it looks good with other cosmetic itens and doesn't look out of place at all.

@@azizabdul8914 Not true. The Tzar Platinum has Team Colors on the sleeves and around the neck, which is where the team colors on the base Heavy model are anyway. The rest of it is also team colored albeit heavily muted, being either a reddish-brown or a bluish-black.

Seriously, it would not at all make sense for many TF2 mercs to use pride skins. It would not fit any of them at all.

Both Mario and Jojo hats not only don't fit the game contextually, but also chronologically. Taking TF2's timeframe of 60's/70's into account, neither series would come out for another 10+ years.
Eh... by this logic, the Team Captain wouldn't make sense in the game either, despite arguably being one of the most well-executed reference items. It looks good on its own and doesn't alienate people who haven't engaged with the source material.

I, for one, would vote to ban all items that do not fit the time period, artstyle, and characterisation.
I do find it interesting a lot of things that make it an appropriate reference cross over with the content of Jojos. The hat also is a Gakuran which we really didn't have in the game tied to both official institutions and cultural styles that existed from the 50's onward.
Sure it has the silly badges on one of it's styles but I'd still argue that it covers a bunch of themes that fit nicely into tf2 without explicitly being the jojo hat
I'm a furry myself, but even I wouldn't want this in the game. I think the Head Prize was already really pushing it, I felt like that cosmetic only really fit maybe Heavy, Soldier, and perhaps Sniper with the whole Huntsman getup, being a hunter and stuff. They are the ones that seem like the types to hunt an animal and then fashion a "prize" out of its head as a hood of sorts.
I will say, I wouldn't call this fetishistic, furry does not equal fetish, this is on the same level as Buggs Bunny. But I also wouldn't want Buggs Bunny in TF2.
This shit belongs in Fortnite where there basically is no art style or characterization, it's all just "Insert Personality Here" characters, but TF2 isn't like that and it really feels like a big middle finger to the characters and world I semi grew up with.
Pyro would never be a furry, even his Valve-sanctioned "animal version" halloween cosmetic is a dragon, something fire themed, it makes actual sense for the Pyro to dress up as a fire-breathing beast during Halloween. It doesn't make sense for him to be whatever species this is meant to represent.

This would of been cool if it was scary for halloween. Out of all the mercs, pyro turning into a werewolf would be fitting. Those creatures are made to look cute on the internet (for some reason) but in real folklore those things are scary, huge, powerful and downright creepy. Often seen as tall boney monsters; which fits pyros unsettling vibe he has.
This all goes out the window when you look at this. A cute doggo. He should have large thin sharp fangs with a long dangling tongue that drips blood. The eye holes should be glowing to mimic the reflective eyes they have in the forest and the fur tufts should be wild and matted. Bits of the mask should be ripped and torn as the fur and bone structure is tearing through it. Think the voodoo undead soul but for a beast.
Too many ppl think pyro is cute and when they try to pet her, she just turns on them and burns them in seconds. She is dangerous; why are we trying to make it cute? It isn't cute! It's a psychopath! XD

I just wish mfs would stay grounded in the reality of the game. CS weapon skins, hell even the gloves and operators, are grounded in the reality of CS. It's realistic, of course I can't answer that a real world FBI, GIGN, SAS, etc would carry around a Dragon Lore but I can't say they wouldn't. That's how customization stuff should be. *I can and cannot say the character would use it.* The bird cosmetics of TF2 are a perfect example, it's grounded in TF2's silly world. The only thing acceptable for Pyro, to me, is the Pyroshark and Phoenix (maybe that little slime guy as well).
Edit: Like I just thought of it. Ground the silly stuff into Pyro's mental illness. Pyrovision only type of thing, that'd be dope. So without Pyrovision it's purely psychotic to see Pyro walking around with, idk, the pelt of skinned wolf, then with pyrovision it's this furry shit. We'll all still know you're a furry, but only pyrovision mfs will see it.

TF2 can have different tastes for different people, so long as said cosmetics are reflective of the tone, themes, and stylization of the game. Otherwise they stick out like a sore thumb and are an eyesore.

Halloween items aren't MEANT to look normal; they're meant to look like a cosmetic you would wear during Halloween. It seems like a very petty thing to call the hat a f-tish item, considering the fact that most people in the furry community don't see things like this as f-tishistic, and it sounds like the result of your own mind thinking that way, no offense. Also, sorry that these cosmetics bother you, but having them outright not in the game wouldn't sit right with some players who actually like to have cosmetics that they can relate to. Not everyone is as passionate about the aesthetic you want as you are. If it really bothers you that much, there are mods that remove cosmetics from the game.

you perfectly explained why i dislike fortnite with a passion: its a billboard game, its only purpose is to advertise some cool shit without actually giving a fuck about the source material, its why I think if something like Elden ring was to be put in fortnite (which thank god it will never be or at least i hope, from software are extremely protective of their brand) it would essentially slander the game as much as it gives it advertisement, dark souls used to be very popular games but they were also a sort of niche in a way, i have no complaints about elden ring appealing to a bigger audience because they have done it in a clever way that feels true to from softwares design philosiphy, not everyone enjoys elden ring and some people will be turned off by its difficulty, but rarely does it ever bend its knee in the way fortnite does to brands or things like that, it sticks to its roots.
and to be honest yeah, im starting to agree that some of the things they put in the workshop are just filler bland self inserting garbage, but theres also a lot that i feel really works with the game, my favorite refrence content is the demoman frozone hat, its a refrence to the incredibles film and to a meme, but the incredibles is set in the same date as tf2 and has that sort of 60s retro theme. I love stuff like that when it actually could fit into the world itself, I just wish that half of it wasnt just "haha lets insert a funny meme thats clearly from a 2000s timezone thing that wouldnt exist in tf2s time era"
Fortnite wasn't always like that. It is actually crazy how many of the problems Fortnite has parallel that of TF2. Refusal to split casual and competitive (Fortnite keeps adding stupid casual shit to competitive, while TF2 does the inverse and tries to make casual competitive, it ruins the game) and degrading art styles from all the slop that gets added. Im making a video now on the degradation of Fortnite's artstyle, using excerpts from this video despite it being about TF2, just because of how closely the two games are linked.
The thing about games like TF2 or Fortnite is that they're free. Free games have to find a way to make revenue somehow, and that is through cosmetics usually. The reason Fortnite must "bend its knee" to different things is because by having cosmetics that can actually make players excited or intrigued, they're doing what gives them revenue best. By making designs that the player base can understand and connect with, they're more likely to make money. Sure, there's people like you who only like things that go with the aesthetic of the game, but there are plenty of others who don't care, and just like when a game has wacky or weird cosmetics that they can relate with.
You don't need to play the game. Go play Elden Ring if it makes you so happy.
@@omegalite8788 Disagree. That is a cheap cop out way of making cosmetics. Fortnite showed that being original with cosmetics was still profitable. Drift, Omega, Fishstick, Brite Bomber... All iconic skins original to Fortnite. Then they got lazy and just started making everything a #ad.
