DMAIC Measure phase explained

- The Measure phase of Six Sigma's DMAIC is all about understanding how your process behaves: How do problems present? What variation is there in your products? Can we see significant differences between shifts? And similar questions should be answered in this phase.
We want to know what the process produces (we'll get to the how's later in the Analyse phase), and we'll want to go detailed. Yes/no questions and assumptions are not going to cut it in the Measure phase: you'll be presenting the process and it's outputs in numbers and graphs - graphs mainly, because they allow you to see much more than just a few numbers.
The main distinction between this phase and work as usual is that detail: focus on defect modes, not just defects; plot events and trends, don't just give a Cpk number; and demonstrate whether or not shifts, day/night, product changes, material batches, etc. are significant sources of output differences.
