Theres a story about the reason why De Quieros thought he had reached Australia and why he called it the land of the holy spirit.
It's said that when he reached Santo it was night time and from the ship looking out onto the island, they saw that the island was lit up like there was a civilization there, lights dotted along the coast and such. Similar to how cities on the coast look like at night.
That's when he thought he had reached Australia.
But when morning came they were were shocked to see that it was absolute bush. Hence he thought the Holy spirit was at work on the island, therefore giving it the name espiritu Santo
That's the simple story....thought I share it with you since you bother to make a video about my homeland

No, he didn't think he found Australia (as we know it), because "Australia" was the name they used for the hypothetical south polar continent.
He named it "Australia" because he thought he'd found that polar continent.
And then, with similar stupidity, when they found what they permanently named Australia, they AGAIN thought they'd found the south polar continent, named it Australia, and then didn't figure out they were wrong until it was too late.
So then they had to make up a new name for the ACTUAL south polar continent, which they called Antarctica.
Australia actually has ignorance enshrined in its name.

@@micahistory It's so weird, how in the US we use an article, like "a university" and "the hospital", because there are of course many of them, but in the UK you say "at university" and I think "at hospital".
It's similar to how it was always "the flu" and "a stroke", but lately I've seen writers, presumably trying to be dramatic, say "just "flu" and "stroke".
I know, off-topic, but linguistics are as fascinating as history. Well, linguistics really is a kind of history.
Getting back on topic, despite obviously knowing the story of the name Australia, I'd watch that video. And I think a lot of others would find it to be fascinating news.

Vanuatu history does not start in 1600's. Their history was always there. History does not start with missionary or explorers arrival. Stop the colonial narrative. Vanuatu people originated from Tanzania, Africa. Thats where their history originated from.

    • @micahistory
      @micahistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

no that is not true. Firstly, history begins with the arrival of civilisation. The history of the uk does not begin until the roman period because that is when the first civilisation arrived. Of course there were people there before but they were not civilised or literate.
Secondly, the people of vanuatu are austronesian and originate from taiwan not tanzania

@@micahistory You are in denial and ignorance is bliss. Vanuatu has admixture of different people. Not only Vanuatu but all over the world. That specific tribe that indentifies themselves as originating from Tanzania are the true pioneers. They know their history. Do you even know meaning of Vanuatu. Unfortunately, i do not buy any white washed closed minded inferiored complexed colonised mind narratives. Lies told by explorers and the likes.

@@micahistoryHistory is culture. Culture is civilisation. History starts when Vanuatu people first got there through Asia from Africa. we came from Africa not Taiwan we came through Taiwan from Africa get your facts right.

history is the written word. That is why before writing, a period is considered to be prehistorical. Also who says that africans arrived to asia from tanzania specifically?@@user-nn7iq8mw6s
