Hi. I bought Bellwright on 26/04 and, according to Steam, I've played 24 hours. I'm enjoying the game. Immensely.
    I thought I'd make a few points:
GRIND: The refreshing thing about Bellwright is that, after your initial burst of resource gathering (standard fare for these types of games), the NPCs that you hire, ultimately, do most, if not all, of the gathering, mining, crafting and construction for you! You are still free to explore, gather resources and hunt for game. Indeed, I will often go off hunting for game (meat, hide etc.) and exploring the map, all the while collecting flax, hemp etc., when I happen across them.
All NPCs that you, the player, hire, have various stats that pertain to their ability to gather resources, speed of movement, cooking, temperament, combat ability, strength and so on. The game also has a priority system, such that when taking into account the aforementioned NPC's stats, you are able to best determine the suitability of each NPC to the various jobs available, thus maximising the efficiency of your village. The same priority system is also used for the various resource production, research and crafting stations, thus enabling you to fine tune your villager's work efforts as you see fit.
COMBAT: Combat used in Bellwright seems to be very similar to that used in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord. In other words, the directions of your attack AND defence are determined by the direction in which you move your mouse. The NPCs that attack you will briefly telegraph their intention as to which direction they will strike from, giving you time to block in THAT direction. As you might expect, early in the game you are weak and rather slow, your strikes seeming to have the effectiveness of a limp lettuce leaf, however, do not be discouraged, as it doesn't take too long before you are actively sparring with Brigands, rejoicing in that decisive, well read and well timed blow that sent your opponent to the Hall of the Fallen.
Bows are a joy to use, and once levelled up, are devastating in their effectiveness, especially head shots, both for your target and against you, the player. The arrow ballistics model seems to be fairly realistic (I've used both long, recurve and compound bows), with the appropriate amount of fall, meaning that you have to aim higher the further away your target is. This also means that you need to lead ahead on targets traversing across the screen. It is an exhilarating experience to have a duel with an NPC bowman, and actually be able to see the oncoming arrow and move out of its way. Of course, you can block an arrow with a shield if you have one equipped. It is worth noting that there is no dedicated "dodge, roll" mechanic, so you can only strafe left/right, at best pressing SHIFT to sprint.
Shields and weapons do take damage over time. The amount of damage your shield takes will depend on the weapon you are blocking, thus a two handed "Dane" axe will cause more damage to your shield than it will from a simple short sword/large knife.
COMMUNITY: Your NPC villagers will improve their stats over time as they perform their various roles and engage in combat. You also have the ability to help the NPCs, and your own character, through the use of books that you can either purchase or will appear as loot or rewards for quests. These books, when "read" will result in an XP boost or multiplier for a given stat. This process can lead the player to becoming somewhat emotionally invested in the NPCs, as you have taken the time to choose the direction the NPC will go, thinking how they might best serve your growing village. Look after them, for they can fall in battle!
WEATHER: The games environment is typical of what might be found in many parts of North Western Europe (I think. I live in southern Tasmania, Australia. 😎). It features lush, rolling hills, marshes, forests, rocky cliffs and mountains, at least that's what I've found in the 20 something hours I've played. What has impressed me is the quality of the season and weather effects. The immersive quality of the rain, the mists and fogs, the violent display of lightning, illuminating the night landscape with harsh, ragged directional lighting, the golden light of early dawn being first caught by the jagged mountain peaks.
At first, with the setting of the Sun, night is dark, requiring the use of a torch to navigate the landscape, but as time passes, there is a subtle increase in light such that we see the world as lit through a soft, gentle waxing moon light, enabling the player to continue to hunt game, scout enemy strong holds etc.
And then we have the seasons, Summer is vibrant, yet muted by atmospheric haze. We hear the twitter of birds, the hum of bees and flies, and the grunts and bellowing of distant Elk. Then comes Winter. The devs have managed to capture the European Winter landscape brilliantly. The many snowfall effects are on full display, from the first gentle hints of the finest, almost magical snow in the crisp air of early winter, to full blown howling, driving blizzards. Of course, Winter brings a special challenge of there being a distinct lack of any food to be had from the frigid environment, save for the odd, hapless rabbit or deer that might find itself on the pointy end of an arrow. Your arrow.
EARLY ACCESS: Yes, the game is in early access, as are a number of games in my Steam Catalogue. There is jank and clunkiness to be found. The character animations can, at times, be somewhat jarring and primitive, whilst at other times they are very believable, for example, bandits will sometimes SPRINT, not jog, towards you if shot at. They will NOT always run in a straight line towards you, sometimes moving side to side. They will sometimes flee, at great speed, if you are getting the upper hand in a fight and are handing them their @rse! They will sometimes attempt to flank and even send a lone fighter to attack from behind.
There seems to be absolutely NO fall damage! No matter from what height you jump/fall. As opposed to the aforementioned arrow ballistics, the games player jump physics looks and feels as though they were programmed by a three year old child, having no real sense of gravity, mass and momentum.
Wildlife animations, such as wolves, boars, deer, are passable but are not up to the standard of Red Dead Redemption 2. The wildlife behaviour, on the other hand, is good. Animals are sensitive to your whereabouts and how much noise you make. Deer, in particular, are very skittish and tend to spot you a fair way away. So, level up that bow skill!
Voices are currently AI generated. However, the nature of the dialogue itself is good and engaging, and if, in the future, is voiced by decent voice actors will lead to an immersive and believable experience. The devs seem to be avoiding the typical fantasy/medieval tropes.
I come from a background of playing the likes of Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous, having spent thousands of hours in both, and I can honestly say that Bellwright has been a refreshing surprise for someone such as myself, although it's worth noting that I have an interest in the Medieval period, particularly that of England.
My advice is to give it a go. Watch a few play throughs or tips videos, if needed. I think you'll be surprised at the game's depth, and ultimately be rewarded with a world full of rich, exciting and engaging gameplay.
    Be well.

its class reviewers are whinging because of the player inventory and items not being stackable. you get over it and actual stockpiles stuff is stackable.

Interestingly, I have changed my mind many times about a game after 20 hrs versus after 2 hrs. For better or also for worse.

Good game, there is some stuff that will definitely piss you off but overall it’s enjoyable and the grind is rewarding when you start getting better gear and grow your army. Needs some QOL improvements and progression changes but worth every penny so far

why is it in EVERY review (or overview) the background footage is JUST people running around and gathering BS materials. It just looks boring AF if this is what people do 99% of the time and the FUN wars is only 1% its just NOT for me. i can fuck trees and gather rocks in New World. or Valheim. or anything with more going on than JUST that. bottom line, it just looks boring af IMO.
