0:12min that sums up my photography adventures with absolute perfection!
I have been on a couple workshops in the redwoods and both were extremely challenging for me to shoot landscapes. Fun but challenging! We were lucky to see pink azalias or rhododendrons in the forests too, which made for some cool variety.
We did manage to show up at just the right time for the rhododendron blooming too, but I didn't find any in decent locations or with any good light really, so no images of them for this time around.
You are very low key in your presentation style, and I enjoy that alot. It makes it easy to follow what you are talking about. And, thank you for your service sir.
Hey thanks, I really appreciate that! 😊
Peak Design straps are great! The redwoods are amazing! I too (and probably everyone else) walk while looking up most of the time. Glad you got to revisit that area.
Nice photography and good explanation of post processing. I used to live in Alamogordo in the 80’s. Holloman AFB and worked at NMSB&VI. Was a Media Specialist.
Oh nice. Yeah, it's a weird town, but there's some cool stuff all around there.
Excellent video and photos Brent 👏
Why thank you, good sir! 🫡🎩
For me it is absolutely the same as with you. I love to be in the forest - I have one right at my doorsteps - but I really struggle with taking good pictures there. They always are cluttered up with too many trees, too many branches, too much leaves.
The struggle is real!
I often do Landscape an Bird Photography at the same time, I always carry a set of of prime Lenses that covers both Both Bird Photography, a 500mm 5.6 (some times a shorter, fx 135mm where I crop) and one or two prime wide angle Lens, also a short tele Lens or a Macro Lens.
I really love the one in Luminer, especially when you comparing the before and after, I feel like you added some sunshine beams on the right corner and also behind the big tree? Is that right? That really give this picture the soul! Love it!
Just that one in the bottom right corner.
Beautiful location, Brent.. love redwood trees and forests.. love your pictures and the work you did using Luminar.. hope Camera lady and you can find the time to relax and chill and enjoy the fruits of your labour 👏😁
That forest looks so beautiful just alone with nature is so heavenly, hope this isnt to silly to ask what do you use for editing great video
Yeah, it was extremely tranquil out there! I use premiere pro to edit my videos.
You're editing explanation is appreciated very much. I know enough about Lightroom Classic and Photoshop now that I'm always clicking off full tutorials because I can't watch the startup steps over and over any more. I love in this video how you say what editing you want to do and why, and then do it, that's very helpful to me being a medium user who is beyond beginner.
On another topic: We both have Crosstreks and I noticed yours makes the same annoying sound mine used to make before I asked the dealer to install the 2 missing screws in the bottom of the license plate to keep it from slapping the hatch when I fling it shut. I'm not asking you to fix it, just offering a tip in case it ever bothers you.
Oh thanks man, I'm glad it helped! And yeah, that plate on the Crosstrek does drive me crazy sometimes. I'll definitely look into that.
Love the video! Thanks.
My wife and I use Luminar and we like it very much. Any tips, tutorials etc that you want to share would always be welcome although we may be the minority.
Having spent considerable time in the far north and even not so far north in Canada, I can tell you that being in the redwoods is NOT bad for mosquitoes. Males don't draw blood, ie: bite. Females do and they are by far the worst if they sense rain because they want water to lay eggs. They do like shade and dampness. There are also many varieties of mosquitoes with differing habits. Lots of possible reasons they weren't biting you. You haven't experienced mosquitoes until they are covering your dinner plate while you try to eat while camping in the north or flying into your mouth when trying to talk. Then there are black flies and no-see-ums. Nasty little critters.
Keep the videos coming. Always waiting for the next instalment.
Yeah, mosquitos are crazy. I've lived in lots of places much worse than this, and visited those areas of the north, and Alaska...it's not pleasant. Another reason I really love NM! 😁
Peak Design straps are great. By far the most comfortable camera straps I've found so far especially for big, bulky lenses. And so well made. I pretty much never use my camera without either their full strap or hand strap. Here in central/south Florida forest photography is rough. You end up with tons of palmetto causing a lot of noise and mess and uninteresting pine forests, though live oaks can be interesting. The swamps are great though. Can be difficult cause low light at times, but great.
I feel your pain living in Maine. Deep dark Forest is a common event. The biggest frustration I often encounter after managing to find a really cool warbler or an owl or whatever is trying to keep my shutter speed fast enough to keep it sharp without going to ridiculous ISOs
I decided to not care about high isos, but the thing that kills me the most with big forest photography is the birds not coming down to the ground or lower levels. I hate shooting up at a bird that's way up in the canopy. In the Redwoods it seemed like very few birds were down in a low level of the forest to get decent images.
Great video!
Many thanks!
Gee, I do all my editing in luminar Neo and like it a lot!
Would love to go to the redwoods
When I am in the Redwoods, my combo is macro and landscapes, especially as I go after salamanders as much as possible (no touch)
I definitely wish I had more time so I could have done macro there!
Improvise adapt and overcome
The video came on, and Im like hello Dorthy we aint in Kansas anymore are we. 🤠 Love the images. Great episode.
FYI the OM experiment is over for me. A lot i really liked, but most of the images i could have done on my S24 ultra. The image quality isnt up to my perfectionist standard. The only way to make that system work is buying the expensive white lens. I can buy an entire 35mm kit for the price of that lens.
🤣nope, definitely in a land far away for this one! And yeah, I know what you mean about the om system. I really did like it. Lots of cool features and stuff, but in the end, I still liked my canon gear much more.
why is ISO still the big thing everyone cares about? denoise in every editing software has gotten so good that you can shoot in much higher ISOs these days.
Yeah, idk, but you'd be surprised at how many people still look down on me for doing landscape with with high isos, and handheld too. 😅🤣
Brent, I've been using Back Country Navigator Pro since 2010/12 on all my Android devices.
Same!
There are 3 girl names for streets where you live. My cousin who died in 1984 was married to Lori.
Mr Young, their dad who developed that subdivision, used to live there in that nice house on 36th.
Oh yeah..
Cool trees
ISO 800 or 1600 hasn´t been an issue since newer mirrorless cameras and the latest AI noise reduction. Might be slightly less dynamic range at those ISOs maybe but noise? Not a problem.
Yeah, it really doesn't bother me at all to shoot at higher isos these days.
Been to Red Woods 2 times in past few years, mosquitoes 🦟 😢😢😢oh my goodness…….they killed me totally……
Luckily, they don't bite me, but they're always annoying, for sure!
Don't wear mosquito Deoderant then llol
Mossies are attracted to Aromatic aroma's
I am their main course in the family, I will be getting bitten while no one else has a single mosquito on them.
@@David_Quinn1995 me too. My friends invite me as bait! Maybe science will figure out why eventually!
Dark forest, yes. Redwoods, no. Best light is early in the morning or late at the evening, so you need some sort of support. I try to always bring a tripod with me, and maybe polarizer as well. And why not a little bit of macro, trying to catch small details that the sun hit, surrounded by a dark forest?! Like you did with the green leaves with your 500mm, you can do with strawes, flowers, mushrooms, moss, and so on. And you have probebly already tried it, but colourful autumn leaves with the light behind them could sometimes be awsome in close-up shots. Just saying! ;-)
Hands down bird photography. At least predator birds.
If you ever want to photograph mosquitoes, come to South Louisiana!! I can assure you of many opportunities! 😂
Been there many times! Got robbed there too. Don't miss that feeling, or the bugs. I do otherwise love the swamp though.
Running around in a forest looking for...anything! Just like me! 😂
I've always prefered wildlife (animal) photography and when I occasionally try landscape I find myself running around in circles not knowing what to take pictures of. 😂
If you're going to dig deeper into forrest photography check Adam Gibbs here on YT.
You might get some good inspiration from him.
Yeah, Adam's work is incredible, for sure.
