Senna used to give me goosebumps on a hot lap when I was a kid, it was like watching somebody on the verge of going to their grave ( unfortunately he did). That's what made Senna great, all the drivers risked their life but Senna seemed possessed, like a complete nutter every lap. I salute the greatest ever to grace an F1 car.

There was that feeling in the air, that when he was doing his qualy lap, he was going to set the benchmark for what is a qualifying lap in that year, at that circuit. You just knew it, he knew it, the paddock knew it, the commentators knew it, the spectators knew it, the TV audience knew it, hell, even his rivals knew it.
He was the standard, which everyone else was measured by, really before or since, in reality.

26 poles out of 32 races between 88/89 says it all, the man ended his career with a 40% pole percentage, still it is a record which has never been beaten and F1 itself will die before such a record is ever beaten.

The drivers at that time said that when they saw the yellow helmet comming, they moved away so no one could blow the lap that everybody in the grid was excited to see.

It got me hooked in 1989, but I don't remember at which race. I had read a comic book chapter where Donald Duck became a racing driver; and I extensively played several racing games on the gameboy and other consoles; and last but not least I read the "Grand Prix Stories" by the Austrian Formula one journalist Heinz Prüller. I used to compare the duel between Senna and Prost with the rivalry between the best math pupil of my class and me, the more linguistically inclined. The first big setback came in 1992, when Senna had no chance against Nigel Mansell's Williams Renault. This was continued even more extremely in 1993, with Prost in the Williams. When that year was over, I really hoped for a comeback of Ayrton. But instead there was the shocking weekend of Imola 1994, where he died. I continued to watch Formula one for many years after that, but never felt the same passion as in the first 3 years.

    Reasons:
Senna- A joy to watch, very agressive through corners, and extreme precision, takes the cars to its extreme limits.
Fangio- Had huge pairs of balls to race in the 1950s and he won 5 World Championships with 4 different teams in that period.
Clark- Extremely smooth driving style, methodical and extreme precision
Prost- Same reason as Clark (Both knew how to save their cars)
Stewart- Won the extremely Wet 1968 German GP by over 4 minutes and that for me sealed the deal

NEVER - NOTHING in the whole world of sport compares to the monumental mix of brutality and artistry of an Ayrton Senna qualifying lap.

Thats not a mistake dude - it's PERFECT technique - Senna did this everywhere - power oversteer on exit - its the fastest way to get the power down early and accelerate as fast as possible - but it needs extreme skill to not overdo it and thus lose time - its extremely difficult to balance it right on the edge - but Senna could do it and he did so regularly - ive seen it many times on his pole laps (another example is his Friday pole lap in Adelaide 91).

Don't blame just the new track designer. The old school used to race in half the circuits actual F-1 races. Despite Senna's pole lap you can clearly see that the lap is rough. It's up to the driver decide and be brave enough to extract the maximum the equipment has to offer.
Today, it's up for the money the teams have. The better car.
No matter how many small changes they do, we are going the wrong direction.
Make it simple. I bet it would be much better.

Imagine having at those speeds with no power steering, basically a steering bar straight to the front axle, having to take your hands off the wheel, even in high G corners, to be able to shift gear... there were cases, like the Lowes hairpin in Monaco, that to be able to lock the steering fully and still be able to shift, Senna would cross his hands. Basically he would lock the steering full left with the his right hand, and shift to 1st gear with his left... WOW... These guys were a different breed of drivers...

    Isso é pilotagem!!!!!!
Perceba as reduções de marchas e as ondulações da pista da Belgica guiada por Senna, veja que com tudo isso ele tem que passar marcha , reduzir e segurar o carro !!! Demais!!!

Wow! Spotted two cars messing around on the track - decision made/engage mission to fly past them. All in about 1 second. Lol. Amazing reflexes/intuition!
I can see most drivers fluffing that one.

As Murray Walker would say " ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK" that's what Senna did every time he was on a hot lap. Incredible.
