  • A playthrough of Mega Man 2 as it appears in Capcom's 1994 compilation title for the Sega Genesis, Mega Man: The Wily Wars.
    This recording is of RetroBit's re-release of the US NTSC version of the game.
    It's Mega Man 2, but 16-bit! The graphics look great, the sound is smooth, and the Metal Blade is still beyond OP. Good stuff!
    If you'd like to see the original NES version, you can find my playthrough at • Mega Man 2 (NES) Playt...

    Even as a 12 year old kid in '89 I was always blown away with MM2 graphics on the NES. It was a next level game and looked out of this world in 8 bit. I been watching you play and I wanted to add, I like how you went by the original boss pattern to defeat the game. 3rd addition: I think NES did some things better, especially the music. This was a solid remake, however little nuances from the originals should have been kept intact, like Dr. Wily's eyebrow animation on Dr. Wily stage 1, sometimes, things shouldn't be messed with or maybe I'm just old and experiencing the Mandela effect. 😂 Anyhow, it was a good tribute in general.

      I started gaming in 1986 with the Nes and Master System. I got my Genesis in 1989 and after that I rarely played 8-bit games anymore (this is going somewhere). However, all bets were off when it came to Mega Man. I didn't care what I was playing I put it down for any new Mega Man games 8-bit be-damned. Every Mega Man entry on the Nes had incredible gameplay and music that was pure audible chocolate for the soul. I remember wanting so badly to see my mighty Genesis get a Mega Man especially after Ghouls n' Ghosts and Strider.
      Unfortunately, that really didn't happen and by the time the Sega Channel launched I was already playing games on the 32-bit systems. Thankfully, I got an Snes in '91 so I did get some Mega Man 16-bit goodness. One thing I must say...while the graphics are quite a bit improved on the Genesis the music is untouchable on the Nes.

      @Sinn0100 I couldn't have written that better myself, Sunsoft obscurities like Batman and Blaster Master get honorable mention too, any Capcom or Konami was pretty much gold on NES, God the late 80's and early 90's...I bet you tore the Rental stores up too. I followed that same path, Sega blew me away with Shinobi and Strider till I got my paws on a SNES in late 91, man...First game Super Castlevania, then F zero, FF2, Super Metroid and Contra. Best times to be a gamer. By the time Sega CD and stuff came around I'd lost interest and moved on to cars and girls. I should have saved my money and got a Neo Geo. Lol

    I played the NES version of this game when I was a kid. The playability is perhaps better on the GENESIS version, but they modified the music a little even if they kept the melodies. The music in the NES version is much better for me, because on 8 bits, the instrumental was more restrictive. And that’s what makes it so charming, the sounds are much more organic. When I listen to QUICKMAN's music, I love hearing little background noises that electrify and that we don't find in the GENESIS version. On the other hand, I think that AIRMAN's music would be better if it was played with an electric guitar. This is all just my personal opinion.

    I still play this game on the genesis mini from time to time! My problem with this version is the slower rate of fire and the amount of health the enemies had in this version when compared to the nes version! Also started playing this recently on the RetroBit Wily Wars release - still trying to get through the final boss rush!
    The bosses are in general significantly tougher, the pace is somewhat slower, and the platforming is a touch stickier. And the NES music is superior. But even with all that this is still a very solid Genesis port of an awesome game.

    You could start with Woodman if you want to, so that you could get all the good stuff to get access to certain spots in Metalman, Heatman, and Flashman's respective stages. The only problem is that if you start with Woodman on the Difficult setting (the only mode in the original Japanese version), he is very tough.

You can also play this on a Sega Genesis Mini and on a Repro cart if you don't want to shell out big money. I first (finally) played it on the Genesis Mini in 2019 and what a package. My only complaint is your character can get a bit squirrely.
    Addendum- Damnit Sega and Capcom why didn't we get a cartridge release here?! You would have made a whole lot more cash had you not just released this on the Sega Channel. Honestly, I don't see how anyone could have gotten through the game back then when the Sega Channel service erased your games the second you turned it off, stupid.

    This port does have it's ups and downs. I love how the game looks. I'm not going to lie. The Wily stages after the first one looked ugly in the original. They look much better here in my opinion. And I do appreciate a little fix that they made when it came out using E-Tanks. You can't accidentally use one anymore. The music is half and half for me. I prefer some tracks, and others not so much. It does sound good overall, though. I especially like the little extra bit they added to the Wily 1-2 theme at the start.
    But, the game does feel slower than the original in some ways. And that's not due to playing the pal version over the ntsc version. I'm not what it is. Maybe it's due to the shots being slower, Item-3 being slower and draining more energy than the original (At least, that's what it feels like), or something along those lines.
    But overall, even if I'm not the biggest fan of Mega Man 2 in general, I can still say that this is a good option. I can't exactly say it's better than the original, just a good alternative.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is the NTSC version, but yeah, I totally agree. The slower shot speed and the additional invincibility frames the enemies get slow the game's pace a bit more than I like. Mega Man is also weirdly sticky in this version. A slight tap won't make him inch forward as easily, so it's really easy to overdo it and fall off a ledge.
