The Spiritual & Biblical Significance of Donkeys

- Father Mark-Mary and Brother Isaiah discuss their fascination with donkeys. Not only do these hard-working animals play an important role in a handful of Bible stories; their curious blend of meekness and courage can inspire us to take a closer look at the things in life we tend to overlook. Brother Isaiah recalls a time when he watched a shepherd and a donkey walk across a desert with sheep. The donkey had a limp, but he kept pushing on with his shepherd despite how much he clearly struggled to do so.
Father Mark-Mary reveals that this story is the first in a series that will explore the theme of the struggler.

A few days ago as I approached the Holy Altar to receive our Lord in Holy Communion I was about to make a certain sacrifice for love of Him and humility which was going to cost me and do you know that the words that came to my heart were, “For you Jesus, I am your little donkey.” I happily wondered “little donkey???” and then today I saw this! VERY BIG SMILE!

Great video!! The donkey is mentioned several times in the Old and New Testament and has a key role on Palm Sunday when a donkey was chosen by Jesus to be his vehicle into Jerusalem. From this came a legend of the donkey's cross.
The little donkey that had been Jesus' mount on Palm Sunday, came to the hill of Calvary on Good Friday. Seeing the tragic event occurring he wished he could help Jesus carry the cross. But he was unable to get to Jesus through the crowds. After the crucifixion of Jesus, the little donkey stayed at the foot of the cross until all was over because of his love for his master. In reward for the loyal and humble love of the little donkey the Lord caused the shadow of the cross to fall across his back and left it there for the donkey to carry forevermore. This cross is a sign that love of God, no matter how humble carries a reward. Many donkeys still bare the sign of the cross on their backs since that very day.

Balaam''s donkey saw the angel with sword in hand and saved Balaam. I like also that that donkey spoke to Balaam and scripture went on as if it was the most natural thing. Numbers 22: 21-39
A talking donkey is sketchy. I don’t believe donkeys can talk. And there’s more issues. Numbers 22 reads as a bizarre fairytale in which God tells Balaam not to Go, then God tells him to go, then God sends an angel to kill him for going, then God gets a donkey to talk to balaam so he won’t be killed by the angel god sent bc he went, and then God tells him to go anyway.

Thank you for the interesting video. Donkeys are truly are one of the Beasts of Burden (the others being the horse, camel and the ox). Donkeys are not flashy like horses; such as the Arabian horse, or like the Appaloosa - the breed with spots or, the Palamino-the golden colored horse. The donkey is cheaper to feed than a horse because of its gut bacteria. Donkeys are much sturdier and more surefooted than horses are, which is why donkeys are favored over horses to traverse mountains as pack animals.

Noticed that too, but, eh, they all have four paws I suppose. Also, Jesus chose a donkey to ride in Jerusalem because His is a peacetime kingdom. If it was a wartime kingdom, the symbolic animal to ride would have been a horse. At least that's my understanding.

thank you for this video. I was thinking about kenosis and what it means. I don't know if I'm wrong but it looks like God is helping me with this video: like the donkey, just to be available to God and maybe become the unexpected bearer of God's good things for the ones around us. Difficult indeed, but yet very plain and simple.

Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. "... your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

On my commute to San Francisco on highway 280 there is a great statue of one of your compadres, now Saint Junipero Serra... on a donkey
You can find tons of donkey figurines decorating houses of the Opus Dei for this same reason. It turns out that it's founder, St. Josemaría, was a really big fan of them for the same reason and would often use this idea of the donkey in his prayer life. So, these donkey figures help us remind ourselves that we have to be more like donkeys. GOD's awesome donkeys ;)

Bro. Isaiah, The message is: it wasn't the donkey per se, but that the shepherd had hobbled him. The sheep, goats and donkeys are hobbled when they constantly run away from him. The donkey being important as a "guardian of the flock" had to be corrected.
When God puts hardship in our life it is a kind of hobbling so that we can not run from him. Notice that Christ carries thy rod and thy staff. The rod to correct/hobble and the staff to guide.

Isaiah, recall also that the donkey is considered a 'beast of burden' and perhaps Jesus chose a donkey to carry Him into Jerusalem because Christ was the 'bearer of all our burdens/sins' and likewise the donkey was the only animal that was fit to understand and be a participant in bearing such a weight.

Donkey is only animal with a cross on its back. Jesus ride on the a donkey into Jerusalem. Coincidence? Donkey is humble and friendly, He eat any food not choosey, I encountered it personally. It seems a donkey is symbolize Peace animal.

I'm a catholic who loves my faith but also spends lots of time praying and studying with protestants (I live in the deep south...), and I personally see the truth in both sentiments. I believe we are all Christ's body, we all worship Jesus and are of the same Faith, but I'm also proud of the deep richness of the Catholic faith, much of which is unfortunately (in my opinion) missing from other denominations. I kinda don't mind being thought of as a bit, well, alien... ;)

A donkey and a colt
A donkey was a symbol of suffering and peace in Jewish tradition.
Mary rode a donkey on her way to Bethlehem.
Jesus rode in on a colt donkey and brought the adult donkey along.
The donkey represents the old covenant (the law) and the colt represents the new covenant (salvation).
A colt always follows the donkey; it never leads the donkey.
Jesus did not ride in on the donkey because the old covenant (the law) was ushering in the new covenant. As long as Jesus was alive (before His resurrection) the world was still under the law.
Jesus brought in the new covenant.
