I’m 76 and I’ve been combating sorrow all my life. Thanks to my sainted grandmother, I was taught from the beginning of my life to be grateful to God for everything. Gratitude has been my greatest defense against sadness. Gratitude to God has taught me to find joy in the smallest things, like today, I can taste. today I have clean water. Today I have clean sheets. The more gratitude is practiced the more I find it deepens. The most basic gratitude is that the Lord created me as a conscious being, and that I am allowed to experience loving him.

Sadness is morally neutral. Cultivate virtues. Ways To combat sadness :
    1. Cry it out
    2. Talk to a friend
    3. Take delight in small things. Change of scenery
    4. Repeat simple truths to yourself
    5. Sleep
    6. Baths

You can also take the suffering upon yourself and pray that for your strugles it takes the sadness aways from others. This is the hardest thing to do

Thank you so much father. I am a devout Catholic (at least I try to be one) but I have suffered from clinical depression since infancy. So, throughout all my life I have been told that "there can be no sad Christians" and in the past that even made me feel worse! The episode of Christ praying in Gethsemane has always reminded me that Our Lord cried, he was fearful, he was terribly sad! I am so grateful to Him for having sent me a great therapist and continue to be loyal to His Word and Sacraments. And I have found another remedy to avoid sadness or at least tackle it: GRATITUDE. If you are grateful you are able to put things in perspective and there is no way you cannot feel Our Lord or Our Holy Mother's presence, love and comfort.

There is a difference, I believe between sadness and depression. Everyone feels sad at some stages of their life. It’s part of being human but depression is something far more than that. Becoming a Catholic three years ago has not taken the edge off my mental health problems. In some ways, it has simply served to highlight them. I tried to combat the thing I try to lock horns and push back the sometimes it’s overwhelming. Going to Mass can very difficult. Other people in my Parish can be very intimidating and I’m not saying that I’m perfect in anyway, but the difficulties I face day to day are very real.

Thank you for your honesty and foresight. You are already done with what we are supposed to do. You are opening the door to it all, and let it be in the open. The more you do that, it seems to me, it helps to cope. I have written my first book that helps me enormously to find joy and walk away from the darkness.

@@josephoyanadel4184 I appreciate your comments. Easter has been very bad; I’ve been to Mass but it was the opposite of what it should have been. Even just to get to Mass, I had to go to a strange church rather than my usual one. I’m now aiming for Divine Mercy Sunday. Whether I go to my Parish, or not, is still not certain. I wish I could just flick a switch and get rid of it.

I can relate. Coming into faith helped my life in a lot of ways and I do experience joy in prayer and sacraments but in day to day life my inner experience is awful. becoming Catholic though did help give me insight into my patterns and enable me to describe what goes on in my head. I’m starting treatment for OCD with a Catholic psychotherapist. I do feel like Christ is helping me even though I can’t always see and feel. I pray you do as well. Depression, especially long standing, is usually a symptom than a root cause of itself. I encourage you to reach out beyond your pastor or church community. Not every pastor is competent with mental disorders.

@@misspeach3755 Protestants have an incomplete gospel. They’ve succumbed to what Paul prophesied in 2 Timothy 4:3-4
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
The Catholic Church teaches now what it has always believed from the beginning of the Church when Jesus Christ Himself instituted it & taught His Apostles who then taught their disciples who recorded & continued teaching through the ages. This was not changed until the Protestant revolution in the 16th century, more than 1500 after Christ. Since then each break in the Protestant denominations lost more & more truth until now. Thank you for this video, it's good to hear that I've been dealing with my sadness well. It's also comforting to hear that seasons of sadness are normal. One challenge ive had was that I've been dealing with the sadness during lent, so a lot of avenues I'd turn to for pleasure are off limits. Though it's probably a good thing, i haven't made a dependency on thoes things such as food and media. And instead have turned to God, and being more social.

The first cure for the broken heart
      1) heal yourself, you have no business dating if you are not happy. To be truly happy you need to be able to be by yourself without relying one someone else for joy.
      2) connect your pain with Jesus. He knows the suffering heart all too well and watching or reading about him will help
      3) understand that as painful it is, at least the relationship didn’t go further . You are more mature now than you were back then, so you can make sure that the next person is more aligned with a mature you.
      4) make sure your next partner is Catholic. When they are followers of Christ they will not be so willing to break the commandments which are all related to love.

Going through the hardest break up, we're both catholic, engineers and musicians...he is leaving for Seminary. I had to convince him and myself that I support him because I do love him. He said I was his love sacrifice for God because he love me and although he really wants to be with me, he feels deeply inside he is called to priesthood. He said God taught him to love with me. This was 3 months ago, we started an (interrupted ) zero contact. It hasn't been easy but the consolations that God has granted me in prayer, in communion, in Eucharistic adoration are wonderful.

This message from Fr. Pine is so refreshing. It is common, in this day and age, to reflexively pathologize sadness as clinical depression, and simply resort to medication as a means to "fix" the issue. Fr. Pine's commentary, instructing us to use that sadness as a foundation for positive change and self-reform is far better way to handle sadness. While I don't doubt that there is clinical depression that may indeed require pharmaceutical intervention, I think our predilection to always view such low moods as purely a medical problem leads to the overdiagnosis of depression and overreliance on medication, all which masks the true issues driving sadness.

In the midst of the descent, a delightful reflection, Fr. Pine!
During my recent contemplations, it was impressed upon me that Christ delights in my wife and our marriage, more than I do. The reality is that Christ pulled out all the stops to present me, as a gift, with a most wondrous wife. I try to delight in my wife and marriage!
A long time ago, after I finished my graduate studies and was married, a friend, still a grad student, called to pick my brain on a weekday night. My wife answered to say that I was taking a bath! He started laughing that I was able to afford the luxury of taking a bath! Fr. Pine, have your sister buy you some bath bombs and take a long soaking bath and do not come out until you look like a raisin, LOL! Cheers to baths! 🍻

That all the daily masses, all the prayers, all the therapy, the meds, the hospitals, the ECT, the self work...none of it resolves the pain that leads to wishing death? I’m not sure St Teresa was not referring to sadness. I think sadness & gloomy are 2 very different things. Sadness can be very moving- it’s an internal or external manifestation of love over a loss, or perceived loss, of a good, true or beautiful thing, & a longing for things to be perfect as God intended.
Gloomy doesn’t acknowledge the virtue of such love, & is without hope.
