    My husband just bought me this machine for Christmas and I hope I can learn. I used to sew blue jeans at Levi Strauss back in the 90s but I know nothing about home sewing machines. We no longer have sewing factories anywhere around Tennessee that I know of.

      @kevinsews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is nothing like the industrial machines you used in your factory. However, it is a good domestic machine. Hopefully, you will bond with it. It will be helpful that you have some experience sewing though vs a newbie that has zero experience.

      That'll do the job! Those old "tanks" are VERY strong, especially with 1.2 amps. Brother makes excellent machines for regular sewing and quilting, but the best vintage Kenmores will go through almost anything. I'm one of many who collect vintage "Kennies"; sometimes we (fondly) call them Boat Anchors. 😁

    I've watched so many comparison videos I'm dizzy. I have both the Brother 371HD and the Singer SD4452. I sew thick fabrics and I love that the presser foot on the brother goes higher than the Singer. The Brother also has some other features I like, but I won't use all those stitches. I don't know where to set the settings for normal sewing. The Singer seems simpler. The Brother is quieter. I'm just so confused... HELP... What Should I choose??? I can't keep them both!

    Hi Kevin, I wonder if you are using a 110V socket... here in Europe I have the same machine plugged into a 230V socket and it goes way easier than in this video - do you think it could be due to the voltage difference? Or is that irrelevant for these machines? I'm not an electrician, so I don't know for sure, but something tells me that it's the 110V that makes this seem to struggle. But I might be totally wrong, what do you think?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was using some 40+ year old pair Levi's jeans that are extremely dense. I have been using them from the very beginning on all of my domestic sewing machine test in order to keep the testing equal. Just about all machines will hem the thinner jeans of today.

    Hi, I have a new Husqvarna/Viking Jade 20 and cannot sew over a thick cotton/fusible backing seam with regular foot. I need to give the foot some help by straightening the back out with a wedge but that doesn't always work. I'm tired of it. Walking foot works OK for the thicker seams but then I'm stuck with just doing a straight stitch. Would you recommend this machine or a Singer? I'm sewing primarily with cotton and some cotton backing or with thin fusible interfacing would probably never use denim or leather on my projects. Thanks!

      @@kevinsews I've been using a 1956 White for over forty years, so I'm spoiled when it comes to heavy duty. But I think some of the Brother HD features make it annoying in general. What I've found: The lighting is awful, the foot pedal cord is about eight inches too short to be comfortably placed anywhere near your foot without moving the sewing machine to the edge of the table, the adjustment dials do not adjust smoothly, etc. etc. etc. I noticed you use an external spindle, and I fully expect the plastic one on the machine to break in the next six months. Probably good for basic sewing, but I would hate to make adjustments on a regular basis.

    I often sew heavy stretch twill and my Singer 6180 is constantly breaking needles. Would you recommend this or the Singer 4423 (the manual states it also has a stretch setting)? The denim result looks similar, but the bobbin thread on this knit is just horrible. I was actually looking at the Singer 9960, but I'm not convinced it'll do as well for heavy trenchcoats and denim clothes.
    Any advice is most welcome!

      @kevinsews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinsews thanks for your reply. What qualifies as heavy duty? I want to sew some jeans, denim vests and canvas/linen coats, but also light weight blouses, but not upholstery or anything like that. Strangely enough, there's little to offer here in the Netherlands in the heavy duty market. I'm also looking at quilting, for which the 9960 is probably the best, but I don't want to ruin it on the jeans. The denim I'm looking at is 360g/m2 or 10oz/yd2. Any way you can advise me?

    Never thought of hammering thick denim hem.
    Also didn't know that some machine doesn't take size 18 thick needle like this Brother & that needle size 16 eye was too small for that leather but amazing that it worked well for the jean hem (on the leather, was the fabric feeder down?)
    Useful demo for stretch fabric too as I've never sewn stretch fabric so it was so helpful as to needle & thread info.

    I just saw a vid on this stitching 10 layers of both denim & leather! I heard that the threading needs to be redone on both top and bottom if changing the tension. Oh, and the thread being placed on the wire/pin sticking out by the bobbin to prevent bundling of thread. Any thing's you do differently now?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope! I was using bonded nylon, which is a requirement when sewing leather. That is what caused the problem. Using standard clothing thread it will sew the leather, but that is useless since the leather will eventually eat through the thread.

    That is a not good humming sound coming from the motor of the machine especially when going through the thick part of the jeans hem. That means that the motor are not powerful enough to provide the necessary torque to run the machine. It will potentially burn the motor. If you know the location where the motor is mounted check for the motor temperature, if it is becoming unusually hot, you can burn out the motor.

      @kevinsews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer the Singer. I've sewn on both and it sews much faster, which you will enjoy after you've put in a few hundred hours (sometimes less) sewing seams. Plus, I think the Singer has a bit more power than this machine. Since it is a low cost machine make sure you buy it from a place that has a good exchange policy. Once you get a good one you should be good to go. Some have had some bad one straight out of the box, which is to be expected for such a low cost machine. Quality control has to suffer to offer it at that low of a price. If you are in the USA Walmart has an excellent extended warranty program. I've used it on a Brother machine I bought there. It sat in the box for over a year. When I finally got it out and sewed on it then it failed. UPS picked up my machine and they offered complete status tracking online. It was back in about a week in working order.

The motor may be pretty small in comparison too. The Singer Heavy Duty is less expensive probably. I think they go for about $160-$189 and are pretty dependable. All of the Singer Heavy Duty machines are the same - the higher model numbers just indicate extra stitches, but everything else is identical.

My mom passed and my sister decided to take possession of her 1970's Singer Stylist 534, that's fine she can keep it I purchased an identical machine yesterday and will commence my sewing hobby. What's your honest opinion on a machine like this.. I purchased the machine and it comes with a wood cabinet that tucks away inside for 160 dollars used a few times and was stored for many years. I bought it on ebay. Thank you so much for your consideration.

      It is a good machine for the price range. You should be able to sew a pair of jeans with it and possibly some canvas and some nylon strapping depending on their thicknesses.

      Rotary Cutter and a self healing mat; seam rippers (I buy 20 at a time); wash away wonder tape (search for it on youtube); wonder clips and a variety of needles of different sizes and types.

    That leather is too thick for that machine. It might be able to sew through one layer but not two. Even if you did use a size 18 needle, the motor is not strong enough, so the needle won't be able to penetrate the layers.

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the whole purpose of the test. Some machines I have tested passed this test. Now I would not suggest using any domestic sewing machine to see leather on a regular basis.

      It depends. Yes, it would work, but if you can spend a bit more I would look at the Singer 9960. It has more modern features even though it has been on the market for around 8 years now. I've had mine for 4 years and it has been a great machine.

      @@kevinsews Thank you so much! i was hesitating buying singer cause heard they are not good anymore. I'm advance sewer but just use industrial so I have no experience. For example, Darlene Cahill, who is on HSN, used her 9960 daily for 3 years and it finally broke down (at least she thought it did) and it ended up being a very minor fix she did herself. She said she loves that machine.

      Yes, I hear you. I use industrial machines daily. The biggest difference to me is an industrial serger vs any domestic serger (including the top of the line Babylock) . The stitch quality is just that much better over long seams.

    You used the wrong presser foot when sewing the leather and the thread was to heavy. All purpose polyester thread works best with a 110/18 leather needle and a walking foot works best, but I understand this machine does not come with one. You would need to purchase it separately.

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was simple testing the power of the machine and using the exact thread I use to successfully used on other domestic machines. Polyester thread isn’t used on leather due to the acid eating through it over time. That is why nylon thread is used when sewing leathers. I’ve demonstrated this many times is classes over the years. So those following along do not use polyester thread on leathers; use nylon or bonded nylon threads.

    You use a #16 needle to sew leather, then blame the machine? Really?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct. A size 16 Leather Needle. That was the largest this machine would support. I tried a size 18 and it wouldn't fit.
