    This is a great unit. You should have just installed the firmware to work around the "safety warning". Took about 30 minutes to load the update on a USB and install it. And, all Android Auto units need the phone to be plugged in for the app to work. No, JVC is not similar in sound.

    • @5after12
      @5after12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that update was not available when I had my Sony XAV-AX100. But once Android Auto wireless is available, I might check Android Auto again.

    I have had mine since August 2017. Besides the boot time the AM/FM tuner is terrible. The interface is quite annoying, if you scroll through the list of preset stations it automatically changes the station too.

      Jay K clearly you didn't pay attention, at no point did I say the product was bad. I believe I even said it was the best Android Auto unit to get.
      What I said was, for me, I prefer the functionality of full Android.
      However, if I had issues with the Android head units like some other people do, then I would go for this Sony

    • @SnownelVEVO
      @SnownelVEVO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well your biggest complaint here was the bootup time (the Seicane takes twice as long to cold boot), some vague complaints about Bluetooth connectivity to your Gear (why you'd need that, I don't know), and how the volume knob is too small (the Seicane doesn't have one at all). The only complaint that makes sense is that you have to connect your phone for it to use AA, which is a good one, but you should have known that before buying an AA unit...

    • @5after12
      @5after12  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alex Nelson the Android head units cold boot is about 30 seconds, but if you have one with Auto Sleep like Joying or the newer Seicane, it is maybe 3 seconds tops. The Dasaita had the Auto Sleep but it would not recognize the MicroSD card after sleep, so I had to go back to a full boot every time. Which is why I switched from Dasaita to Seicane.
      The Gear connectivity was pretty annoying. I had asked about it on Reddit and multiple people had the same problem. If you don't use a smartwatch then it is a non-issue, but for people like me who wear one every day, it can be quite the annoyance.
      I also was used to the bigger screen size of the Android head units. And of course I knew the Sony was smaller, but I thought I would deal with it. Once I had it in, I really missed the larger screen.
      But regardless, it is something I paid for with my own money and I decided for my money, I would rather have full Android. However, I still maintain that if these Android units shit the bed, I would buy the Sony again. It was a great replacement head unit, with a few minor annoyances.
      For anyone who doesn't want to deal with the quirks and minor annoyances of the full Android head units, I would recommend the Sony.

    • @ososkim
      @ososkim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bestbuy display unit did not show the annoying startup screen. And there was no antenna so the radio was unable to tune in a station. (Once a station is tuned in, the preset channel number disappears and is replaced by the song being played. More annoyance.) Sometimes, you have to use a device for a while to decide if it's good or not. The safety warning did not seem to be a problem until after 2 weeks of using it.

      I don't know, most reviewers dont show it. There are a few videos by Quality Mobile Video that show it. And a lot of people hated this video, but the time to start clearly was an issue. I am considering picking up another Android Auto unit, so I will do similar tests

      Ster Fry performance-wise this is the best one yet:

      Audio quality has definitely improved, but still not as good as the Sony. However, I am going to try a USB DAC and see if that works. But the standard DAC still sounds way better than the stock head unit I had originally

    I'm super confused, did you not research this before you purchased? Its a smart radio, 26 seconds is not long at all, and the having to plug your phone in for android auto or carplay to work, how tf do you expect it to work? Magic?

    • @5after12
      @5after12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      where is the confusion? I say in the video it sounds great, and is a good price if you want Android Auto, I said for me, I prefer the full functionality of an Android head unit like this one:
      th-cam.com/video/xkD2B9ONxls/w-d-xo.html
      If I were to go back to Android Auto, I would try one of the newer units that have Wireless Android Auto and Wireless CarPlay. That was not available when I tried the Sony, but are both currently available now, and although they do not require plugging a wire in every trip, they do not use magic.
      At the time of my original purchase, I didn't think it would be so annoying, and if you have a lot of long car rides, then it probably isn't a big deal. For me, my driving is mostly short trips around town with multiple stops. Every stop you have to wait the 26 seconds, every stop you have to plug your phone in, and for me, that was not enjoyable.

    • @Zackyx
      @Zackyx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My confusion is this unit is clearly a "Android Auto" unit. Which requires the android phone to be connected. The video you linked is to a unit that has ANDROID OS on it. They are different things. So if you understanding is that the units are running the same software, that is incorrect.
      Android Auto requires you to plug your phone in just as does carplay. So for you to ding this unit for something you didn't do research into and it not coming with is kinda unfair to the brand. But whateves, looks like you got the radio you wanted anyway in the other video. cheers.

      5after12 The boot time is really insignificant when compared to performance and quality.
      My buddy had a Android based unit, but it was very glitchy and the audio was mediocre. It booted up in about the same time, but it was very slow over time and audio wasn't the priority. It was a Seecane and wasn't returnable.
      I bought an Android auto based unit because currently no big manufacturers produce Android Based units because the operating system has been quirky, and isn't reliable, nor do they produce nearly the same quality of sound you can get from $300-$400+ receivers.
      Also, the second set of beeps is just for it to connect to your phone. It kills the Bluetooth as to not interfere with Android auto. My pioneer did the same thing.
      When bigger manufacturers start making Android based units and Android becomes more reliable on them, heck yeah. But there's too many compromises for Android right now.

    • @5after12
      @5after12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some valid points, but be aware quality varies greatly from one Chinese head unit to the next. I have seem some real garbage on TH-cam videos. Most people have to sort of guess and pick one. I have a mild obssession, so I've purchased a boatload, I'm well past the point of saving money.
      And to be fair, some have been painfully slow. Some have been just slow enough to be annoying. My Joying's with Intel processors were perfect, but they died after a year.
      However the latest crop of Dasaita have Octacore processors, and 4GB of RAM. I have been using the latest Dasaita for a few weeks now, and it is pretty impressive. Very fluid, sound is good, not quite up to par with the Sony, but I'm about to gut my whole Jeep system.
      I figure Android head unit to DSP to Amp, and my sound should be quality. I'm going to test the outputs, but i might throw a USB DAC in the mix prior to the DSP.

    • @SBinKMedia
      @SBinKMedia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      5after12 it seems like so much extra work. The sound quality is usually what people look for.
      Yeah the USB dac will work wonders, but the amount of work you'd need to put in just for Android ha ha.
      I don't think I could fit all of the necessary parts behind the dash. But if and when you make a video with a dac, let me know. I'm curious to see the results

    • @5after12
      @5after12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SBinK Media well I have a Jeep, so I have lots of places to fit stuff, but I will probably mount the amps under the seat.
      USB DACs are tiny, so that won't add any space. I already have the Dragonfly Red, which I will test out shortly.
      But yeah, I plan on documenting the entire process. Also I plan on having it setup so I could swap to a regular head unit if I bail on Android. I am interested to see how Android Auto wireless works.

    I don't understand all the thumbs down. Damn right I would have returned it. Fuck a 30 mins on a workaround on a $400 piece of junk. I spent $400 at best buy on an open box Galaxy tab s4. A little Velcro, mobile hotspot, and a Bluetooth connection and I don't see how you can find a better experience. I've got backup camera through my off cable, Google maps, podcasts, TH-cam, Netflix, Pandora, Spotify, read text aloud, respond to text, send/receive calls all controlled by Google voice without lifting a finger. Even if you don't have a hotspot you can download maps, podcasts, music and videos to view offline. Literally the safest, most intuitive awesome infotainment system available. Oh, and I still have a Galaxy tab s4 when I'm home. Typing this on it now.

      Keith Croshaw hey thanks! I don't mind them, but they seem to miss the point. The Sony is a great radio, if the new Sony XAV-AX5000 had wireless Android Auto, I would definitely be interested in giving it another shot.

They certainly aren't total deal breakers and don't make the Sony a bad device, but they are things that annoyed me about it.
