Hi Suzanne, what is exactly the purpose of a short row I am doing a drop Nord pattern and I am doing a mouse head and it’s the ear and I don’t understand at all because it starts with 15 stitches and then it says to work on the back leave one stitch on each side then leave two stitches on each side and I’m wondering how it ends up being five stitches on each side. What did you do with the other five stitches?
Ears are usually shaped by decreasing the stitches across a row. But they could also incorporate short rows. Just like a heel turn on a sock, which also combines short rows with decreases (k2tog and or SSK)
So in the tutorial I am following it states to sl st, k, p, k, p, k, p..., turn. Repeat R1 19 rows. Can you please tell me how to turn in this context if it is any different. Please do not spare any detail as I am extremely new to this. Thankyou for your help!
Hi Suzanne! I just came across your video because I am working a sweater with short rows and it seems this is exactly what I am supposed to do (just turn), however, not all rows say tu turn and I am left with stitches un-worked. Could you shed some light into what I'm doing wrong? 1st row (RS): K7, M1L, p3, turn. 2nd row (WS): K2, p1, M1Lp, p7. 3rd row (RS): K7, M1L, k2, p3, k5, turn. 4th row (WS): P4, k3, p3, M1Lp, p7. 5th row (RS): K7, M1L, k4, p3, k6, p3, k1, turn. 6th row (WS): K3, p6, k3, p5, M1Lp, p7. 7th row (RS): K7, M1Lp, k6, p3, k6, p3, k6, turn. 8th row (WS): P5, k3, p6, k3, p6, k1, M1L, p7. Specifically, after working row 2, I am left with 1 st on my left needle and since it doesn't say to turn, I am unsure what to do. If I turn and work on row 3 and so on, I have the same problem on every even row that doesn't say to turn. Eventually on row 7 I don't even have enough stitches left to finish the last k6 (I only have 4 st left at that point)
Please show me how to knit to shape a lower body of a teddy bear Lower body 1st row k12 turn 2nd row K12 3row k11 k2tog knit to end On the needle there are 43stitches
Hi Suzanne, I think that's what I need. I'm knitting a jumper where I need to shape neck, my pattern said "k28, turn, cont on these 28 sts" this jumper is in stocking stitch. Does that I mean I just do what you show on the video? Thanks
I'm feeling really stupid about this! I've not even started as I just can't understand what it means. I cast on 12 stitches, the first row is: knit FB, k1 & turn - this means these few stitches would then be on the LH needle as its been turned. This means that these are now the only few stitches I can knit. Meaning the other stitches (presumably 2nd row), are now on the RH needle (as though they've been knitted)! So how do I knit the 2nd row (& all a even numbered rows) - s1, k to end and turn! This row would be the easiest as you knit to the end, whereas the first row just says knit FB, k1 and turn! This is really frustrating me! None of the turning stitch vid's on here show this sort of pattern, where you start off in this way. I'm hoping to knit hedgehogs for a charity. The head is in ordinary wool and the body in the eyelash wool - it's knitted in one piece.
OK, stop thinking that you are going to work all across the row at one time. In this pattern that will not happen until the end. Work as we have talked about - follow the directions. When the directions say to turn, that means that you will switch the needles to the other hands. For example, move the right needle to the left hand and more the left needle to the right hand. Then work what it says. When you see a period (.), that also means turn. So if the directions say to turn, turn, if you see a period, turn. Let me know if this helps.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan hi. But when I turn the knitting, changing hands, the first few stitches then end up on the LH needle so basically they would be the next stitches to knit. The other stitches are then in the Rh needle, meaning I can't knit the second row.
Nothing on the Internet about turning stitches is helping me! My pattern says, row 1: knit FB, k1, turn. Row 2: sl, k to end. But when turning after row one , these three stitches are ending up on the LH needle, meaning they should be the next stitches to knit. I therefore have no clue at all as to how to knit row 2. As I say, nothing on the Internet is showing me how to turn after just knitting a few stitches!
OK, so you pattern is telling you on row 1 to knit fb, k1 and turn. There are now 3 stitches on the right needle. Row 2 says sl1 and knit to the end. So you would sl1 and k2. Then turn your work again. Now follow what row three says. Yes, these are short rows, with without a wrap and turn just as in this video. Let me know what the directions are for rows 3 and 4 are.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan hi. Thanks so far! Row 3 is kfb, k3 turn. All even rows are all s1, k to end and turn. It's to make a conical shape for a hedgehogs face.
Yes, this will work. So after you have knit to the end on row 2, you turn your work, kfb, k3, turn and then sl1 and k to the end. You are doing fine. just keep following the directions.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan If I knit (row 1) KFB, k1 and turn, these stitches are now on the LH needle! They are only on the RH needle if I don't turn! Oh my! Confused am I! (The pattern starts off with 12 stitches, and ends up with 21 (by row 19).
This seems like the "vague" hole left behind will actually look nice in the end-- a bunch of these traveling up the garment. So, I ask, if a pattern says "wrap and turn" then on the next row "pick up the wraps" what happens with this no wrap technique as a replacement? Thanks so much for the video!
You just knit across without doing anything. If you did not wrap, there is no wrap to pick up and conceal. Try it on a swatch first to make sure you like it.
Short rows are used to create shaping in rows, just as increasing and decreasing creates shaping in stitches. Often short rows are used in sock heels, shoulder shaping and bust shaping to name a few instances. Happy knitting.
Yes, you have to turn, or knit back backwards. I have a garter stitch video on this topic coming up real soon. Check back in a couple of days. Happy knitting.
I'm making a bat's forehead. I just make a row, not a short row, but turn 7 comes out repeatedly. I followed this video, but strangely, the number of stitching increases and it doesn't fit the design. It sounds weird because it's a translator, but please help me. ***tears***
Thank you for making this pattern so easy to do

What would you do if the stitch says k2, p4, turn. Then row 2 says YO, knit to end. And I have like 40 stitches on my needle
Here is the video that you want, for the YO short row turns. - Happy New Year. th-cam.com/video/JSoldz90lIk/w-d-xo.html
Is this the same knit stitch as Turn leave reaming stitches unworked?
Yes, Shawn, it is! 😊

Just follow the directions just as you see them, exactly. You do need to turn, but do not need a short row in this instance. 😊
So,beautiful ❤🎉

Sinto muito, Lisa, não entendi bem a pergunta. Meu tradutor mencionou carreiras, e tenho certeza de que você não está perguntando sobre um emprego.

I would need more information. How many stitches are you starting out with? What pattern is this?

Thank you!
What I don't understand is the reason for the turn...what is it for?

This boggles my mind do we have to turn every row when we finish a line? like to see this done on a garter stitch project
Yes, you have to turn, or knit back backwards. I have a garter stitch video on this topic coming up real soon. Check back in a couple of days. Happy knitting.
