Good job Pete. All these 440 vids is temping me to build one. I built a 408 small block magnum about 5 years ago. It was the easiest build I have ever done.
Give in to the temptation and build one
I’m in Highschool and I just picked up my very first project engine. It’s a Ford 300cid inline 6 out of a 1970 f100. I got it for a very good price and I am going to rebuild it. I will definitely use this video to help me paint it when it comes time.
Awesome....good luck
Never thought of, heard of or seen foil used as masking, it's actually a really good idea!
It works great
Thx for the info Pete. I'm in the process of building a 60 over 440 for my 68 roadrunner
That's awesome!
Great vid. I loved the format.
I'm trying something new
Hey Pete, I'm a fan of your work and a subscriber. Just finished my motor using much of what I've learn from u. I just filled the 3rd tank of gas on it, and all is well. I never saw the tin foil technique before. I whish I had watched this one before I painted mine. oops - oh well. Good post. Thanks Man!
That's really awesome, great job, thanks for watching
Had some new paint peel off my 283 yesterday. Good news is I haven’t dropped it in the hot rod yet. I cleaned the block well but I just used off the shelf rattle can paint and primer. Thanks for the information on Eastwood paint products.
Thanks Mike
wow, amazing work, but you need a clean air system for the garage.....A dust collector system at the very least.....bitchin work! Thank you for the foil tip ;)
I do have a method of filtering air, still some material falls to the ground. Thanks for the suggestion
Preach bro on the prep, can't stress that enough!!!!
Prep is 90% of the work
looks sharp. Nice work
Thanks 👍
Nice job! Very neat
Thank you! Cheers!
You are awesome thanks for all you do!
You are so welcome
The music...so awesome. I "listened" to this video 5 or 6 times for that reason alone. Here's what I found out:
There are a few distinct sections, all is TH-cam stock music.
Jack's Garage by Midnight North
March On by Ethan Meixsell
By the Sword by Ethan Meixsell
Long Live Death by Audionautix
Ethan Meixsell's killer riffs are what hooked me.
And the video is good too.
Thanks Brian, you are correct
Awesome job 👍🏼
Thanks! 👍
You did a great job as always Pete. Nice music choice too! Well done sir.
Thanks Ian, trying to mix things up a bit
Loved the music
Great vid, love your choice of music.
Thanks keith
Good job Pete
Thanks Frank
I’m about to rebuild my 350 in my 82 gmc
Same here. Not really rebuilding I guess since my engine is a crate engine with less than 5k miles on it but I am building up my top end. Heads and cam. That kind of stuff
Pete, you are amazing. I can't believe that you got that much coverage out of that 2 pint spray gun. When I do that, I usually have to refill the gun several times. Now to get serious, how did you protect your camera from the overspray?
I actually filled it up 4 times. I like to use it because I can use lower pressure and have better material control. I used a super high-tech method to protect the camera.... a t-shirt wrapped around everything except for the lens....lol
Coooooool
Best ever engine paint job🦾
Thanks my friend
Digging the aluminum foil trick...never thot of that
It works awesome!
For the fuel pump rod. Did you use any red or blue lock tight on the plug or anti seize?
No...it's a NPT thread so it will swage
I noticed you just partially taped surfaces that will later have stuff bolted to them, gaskets, etc... do you leave those as is or do you need to scrape them clean? Great video. Thanks!
Any gasket surface I will scrape clean, mounting holes will be fine
Hey Pete, nice job on this. I have a GM 250 inline 6 and removed all the old paint and cleaned ready for paint. What steps would you take to make it look good and very glossy. I don't see if you used clear. Can you please let me know the steps. Thanks
Thanks Mike, this paint comes out very glossy. I have always been impressed with the finish
what would you suggest on a block previously painted that won't be hot dipped? How do you prepare the old paint if you can't get it off?
Clean it with aircraft paint stripper
Great work Pete.
Thanks my friend
Great video and information, thanks! However, I am looking for a MOPAR blue and not having any luck with Eastwood. Do you have another recommendation to achieve this color?
Summit and Jegs carry it
@@PetesGarage Thanks Pete!!
When you do a nice paint job like this do you clean up the uglys off the block ? I use my carbides & clean up all the casting excess. And even flatten out the smooth areas to very smooth. I also do inside around the cam sight holes and behind the timing cover there's lots to smooth
I clean up as much as possible. Maybe 50% of it are casting pits that could be filled in, but that wouldn't last.
@@PetesGarage yeah true, I used to paint Boeing planes and we had some spaceage body filler stuff that might work. I'll have to check. But my engine is gonna be in a dart not a 30s car with no sides.
So if one is painting it with the heads on the block if you ever remove the heads is the paint gonna get messed up or will it be alright?
It will be fine, you will just need to touch up the bolts when you put it back on
I want to paint my aluminum intake the same color as the engine. Is there any special method for the intake before painting? Thanks
Use zinc chromate primer
First view, comment, and like.
Awesome...that earns you a Nord-Lock bottle opening. Email me your address
Pete's Garage, man! If I would have known that I would have kept my phone in my pocket while I put the turbo back in the F 150 today! Dang it. Love your videos. Thanks!
Sorry Bruce, he kinda hit the trifecta there. BUT, you never know when I have stuff to give away, always stay tuned... I have some HUGE things to give away coming up
I've emailed you with the title being "Nord Lock - 219"
Very nice , what do you clean the inside with ,I'm painting my 350 vortex an I'm trying to clean it for paint
I use lacquer thinner, but you really only need to clean the outside very well.
Can you paint aluminum heads and can I just mock assembly the engine?
Yes you can to both questions
Sounded like Satriani during the painting segment!
I love Satriani
@@PetesGarage you just became my favorite TH-camr, Pete. Nothing like cruising the freeway to the tunes of Satriani
Quick question I got my crate motor just in and and there is that little fuel pump I'm not going to be using that fuel pump do I still need to put in that little rod
No
should be good prep for my ford 351m
Absolutely
Pete, may be a silly question but what engine stand do you prefer? I have been working on a BB Chevy and rotating the engine on the stand is extremely difficult, the weight of the heads will also make the engine rotate upside down quickly. You made it look easy!
I have used many engine stands. I prefer the ones with the crank to turn the engine. If you grease the rotating sleeve it makes it easier. Also, after you put the heads on you have to lower the center of gravity to make up for the heads.
@@PetesGarage thanks for the reply, what do you do to lower the center of gravity?
Unbolt it and adjust the arms so the engine sits lower in the stand
What’s up man, so I’m just ready to paint an aluminum motorcycle engine. But I’m not sure if I should use primer since the engine gets hot and needs to keep cool. You think I should just go with high temp coating paint from Eastwood ? Straight high temp coating without primer. Please get back to me as soon as you can. Thanks!
The aluminum is tough because of expansion, but the Eastwood will work, just spray it thin
Patiently waiting for a you rebuild an 5.3 or and LS engine
I'm patiently waiting for parts...lol
Hello Pete , Great work. Like to watch your videos .You do a very neat and planned out build. I am about to rebuild a 440 that I have a rod knock in. Do not know why it happened, I did not put the motor together, but I will find out more once I pull it out of Car and break it down. Hopefully It did not damage the crank.
Were are you located..Have you ever built any Big stroker motors 600hp plus.
Take care
Eddie
Thanks Eddie, I'm outside of Buffalo, NY. Sounds like you have a spun bearing. I've built several
Have to be maticuless when installing main's, I'm about to rebuild a 2.8, just to stay factory, dread it, 2.8s are limp wrist, and no aftermarket shit anywhere
Hello Thank you for this video. I want to ask what is the first substance you used that u rubbed on the engine at the start of the video?
Lacquer thinner to clean it
will the epoxy primer not start to crack at a higher temperature or do all epoxy primers have a high temp resistance?
I've never had that problem
What was your dyno numbers on this 440 I'm a 440 for my 69 charger looking for 600HP. Thanks!
Dyno test next Monday the 13th
What did you use for the cleaner? What about using brake clean?
Lacquer thinner....brake clean will work
The primer and paint will with stand the heat? The ones you used?
Yes, I've never had a problem
Pete,
When using the Eastwood’s 2K engine paint, what size nozzle do you shoot with ?
Thanks for providing such a library of how to’s
I use a 1.4 in my detail gun
Can i use acrilic regülatör car paint to paint engine block after epocxy primer?
Depends on the brand
is the exhaust manifold gasket not much of an issue with the paint in between? looks like only the exhaust ports were covered with tape
I've never had any problems.
But how did you get block so clean before wiping? I just got my 460 back from machine shop and I’m going to start removing the light surface rust from just a few days of exposure with no protection
When I get the block machined they bake it, shot blast it, and coat it with a cast blast. It is very clean when I get it and stays the way until I paint it.
Just curious - why paint the valley pan? Won't it be hidden by the intake manifold anyway?
It is not hidden by the manifold, you can see the entire pan.
@@PetesGarage Oh okay, well that explains that!
How do you remove it from small areas after it's dry? Like areas that cover places a gasket will be?
Scrape with a razor balde
How did you keep from getting paint all over the floor and walls from the fog of spray?
I don't, I just clean them often. I actually have a good fan but it was too loud and I was going to talk and film.
If using a rattle can type engine enamel do you prime as well? If so what primer to use? I’ve used without in the past and had no problems.
You don't have to, but if you want to sue a primer it should be a metal etch epoxy.
The Rocket Absolutely!! I do like epoxy over etching primer though. IMHO
The song at the end is on car mechanic simulator for a sec I thought I was watching a vid of that lol
I'm sure most videos get the music from the same places
Hi, Pete. Came by your page via one of your fans (M. Gorman) on Amazon. I had asked Eastwood what kind of thinner they recommend to spray their product and wasn't really given an answer so, he sent me over here. In your video, did you thin the engine paint or is it thin enough to spray on with no thinner? Thanks in advance!
I never thin it, mix it with the hardener and it's ready to go
@@PetesGarage Thanks! I appreciate you getting back to me. Subscribed!
What are you using the clean the engine in the beginning?
Lacquer thinner but any solvent degreaser will work
You did a beautiful job! I don’t own a compressor or spray gun is it worth buying it or can I just use Eastwood aerosol cans ?? I don’t want it to look bad and want it to last a long time thanks
The Eastwood cans would do a fine job
@@PetesGarage thanks
Ok, with that sound track, your hood needs to be an Eddie from Iron Maiden mask, wear spandex and play some air guitar between coats.
I agree
Can you do a Mopar 360 Magnum engine next?
Sure, send all of the parts
Pete's Garage how much do you charge?
Alex Wagoner I see ya only responded to 1 part of my reply. Yeah it was more inspiration to build one yourself
Best paint video I've seen yet, but I've got two questions for a slightly different situation. I've got my block covered in wd40 to prevent rust, when I go to paint it, will the lacquer thinner or acetone be enough to strip it bare for paint? Also, my oil pan is very surface rusty, and I was thinking to sand it as well as possible, and then using rusty metal primer to cover it whole if sanding doesn't do the trick. Would I be able then spray epoxy primer over the rusty metal primer when spraying the engine as a whole assembly in preparation for house of color kandy paint?
Acetone would be best. I would spray that thing until it's bone dry. WD will absolutely prevent the paint from sticking. You can clean the rust with a decent rust converter like POR
@@PetesGarage thank you, i wasn't sure if i needed anything more than acetone for fully removing WD-40. I'll go fully over it several times to be sure it's all gone. Would you recommend heating it up with a heat gun afterwards to draw out any moisture possibly left over? And I'll look into using POR.
I'm not sure heating would help, acetone evaporates quickly
Is the music you shredding on your guitar?
No, I can't shred and paint at the same time...lol
Do you recommend painting before or after getting machine work done?
After
@@PetesGarage copy
What was the liquid material you used to wipe down the block before priming? How many times did you have to refill your paint gun to get two coats? Thanks for doing the whole video !!!!!!
I used lacquer thinner. I filled it 4 times, thank you for watching
Pete's Garage I see you were using paper towels, is fm not an issue when just focusing on the outside of the engine?
FM is always an issue which it why you see me blowing off the outside often. Great observation
I want to do this to my engine while it's out, were do I source this high temp epoxy? That is ( Chevy) orange, lol!
I use Eastwood 2K
Would this paint be easily damaged by parts cleaner?
No, it's chemical resistant
Love your videos. Thanks for providing the content for us! But how would you go about painting a previously fresh painted crate engine? I want it to be durable and last. Would it br the same process but witch just scuffing before priming?
I would try to clean it up some, wipe it down with lacquer thinner
You think wetting the floors would have controlled overspray a little better?
I do that to keep the paint from stick to the floor
It looks pretty but it looked like you painted the spark plug threads?
When I am priming it you see me come around the block and stop for a few seconds, that's when I put silicone plugs in. I pull them out right at the end to make sure I get full coverage so a little overspray may get on them, but I clean them up. Great observation.
Is this epoxy primer good for engine high temperature?
Yes, it is
Nice job, but I would have taped up the exhaust studs and put old spark plugs so not to paint the threads, just saying
I put plugs in the spark plug holes just before painting. Taping the studs is also a good idea.
What’s the thing called that held up the engine while you painted?
The engine stand?
lol
HEMI Orange on a 440 Magnum? Interesting. What model year is the engine?
Customer requested it for a '69 Coronet
I never paint my Harmonic balancers. I was told many moons ago that the Paint would or could throw the balance off. Is that not true?
Well, a thin coat won't hurt it, but if you put on too much and make it heavy on a part it certainly could throw it out of balance.
No, it is not true.
You might want an evacuation fan in there!
You're right, the camera makes it looks worse than it is
Want to see more how you taped the heads
Just tape and a blade
hey pete was is the name of the little spray detailer gun you use in this video looking for a small cheap one to paint a block.
This one is the Devilbiss Finish Line detail gun
@@PetesGarage thanks Pete, what cheap gun do you recommend for spraying a engine block with enamael, i guess i am saying, can i get a cheap gun but what size tip do i need to spray the enamel
Depends on the size of the gun. A Full size gun will have a 1.3 fluid tip.
@@PetesGarage so the 1.3 will work for enamel or epoxy enamel or should i go with the biger tips, , thank you sincerly from the bottom of my heart, this a important rebuild and a surprise for my fathers cigar boat so i will ot be skipping any cornors
Pete, your a nice guy, but you got dust in your paint. Next time wet the garage floor down to keep the dust down. Other then that good job!
I usually do wet the floor, thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the tip ima paint mines in the garage as well
Chevy orange!
Chrysler orange
I’m about to rebuild my 360 for my 79 Ramcharger
Good luck!
the Waterpump in the back seems to swing forewer after touching 😄
Yeah, it's just hanging there
I have a 1968 340 I'm going to rebuild and put it in a 1978 Dodge warlock
Sounds pretty cool
Did you not cover the spark plug holes?
I put silicone plugs in them
Seeing if I can get my stolen motor back at least since both parents stolee both my vehicles now..... Then I can at least paint my 302HO & try and throw a 14lb of boost on it, maybe throw it in a little truck with the turbo. Cause the 205-215HP was plenty in the foxbody, now that I'm 27 a little more speed would have been fun, but w/e not a good area to have that much power in a small car anyway. Unless I did a full body conversion on it but that takes away from *the car*
Can you build a AMC 304
I can build anything
Why are you using epoxy?
I thought you're supposed to use high temp paint?
what band/bands?
I would have to look them up. They are provided by TH-cam. You cannot use anything copywritten so they provide music to choose from.
What’s the music in the video??
That is music supplied by TH-cam that has an open use for copyright
Doing my 360 in black and red
Sounds awesome
I always rushed through it. I guess that explains my crappy results.

Now you can go back and watch
sure !no doubt.., thanks to you
Why paint the uncovered spark plug holes?!!!
I put small silicone plugs in
Damn, bro. Get you some ventilation.
You're right
I wish I could help you paint some motors.
I wish you could too

You're all set
@@PetesGarage should I want to change colors...just paint over the original??
You have to rough it up
Nice. But the music is too damn loud.
Good thing there is a volume control on most devices
I dunno...I think I'm ok with leaving plugs, both screw type and soft plugs, unpainted. For a variety of reasons. Do love Hemi Orange though...best color EVER for showing leaks...guess that's a double-edged sword, eh?
Also, I'm anally retentive. Contrasting color for bolt heads and cylinder heads...(black works)
