    Awesome tip on using the hybrid handoff. I don't think I would've ever thought of that. Every Nikon user should be subscribed to this channel.

    If "a picture is worth a thousand words", how much is a video worth? I don't know the answer to that, but I'd say it's worth a whole lot more!! Thanks for your video's. They are helpful AND motivational.

    Thank you for your excellent explanation of the hybrid handoff. I can rely on you to help me open up more of my Z9 with each view. Can’t wait to use the handoff in the marsh blind where I’ll be at dawn tomorrow!
    Follow up: I was able to capture amazing bird take off images with the Hybrid handoff. Once I determined my subject was about to take off ( clues including the the bird pooping or turning into the wind , etc…) I pressed my function button switching to 3D tracking allowing me to continue shooting. Oddly I have never used the Dynamic AF as it’s never been acceptably accurate for me . My main camera previously was Z7II and while I learned to shoot birds and BIF images with it but the Z9 has been a godsend over the last 13 months.
    One last thing…I use the HH to shoot a Hummingbirds taking off and in flight at 120fps and the resulting images are like nothing I’ve been able to capture in the past. I was trying to keep a Hummingbird inside the Large Area box on the Z9 and it was almost impossible after initial takeoff. Cheers!

    So appreciate the real world examples and settings Hudson!! It's one thing setting up and programming all of the FN buttons, etc. Still another to see it in action which is what I need. Still have my D500 for Wildlife, and haven't tried my Z8 yet for wildlife. Looking forward to using these! Great video!

    Hey Hudson, as one of those who was asking for this video, let me start by saying thanks! Since the Z8 & Z9 have changed the way I do photography.videos like this are essential to my success with the camera. It’s going to take some time and practice to master the muscle memory needed to hit the right buttons to pop back-and-forth between the banks of settings you have assembled. I have primarily been a landscape guy but now, with the Z8, I feel like I can tackle performance and action photography and have a chance to get the kind of sharp images that seemed to totally frustraight me before. This episode has been saved to my photography favorites playlist so I can review it each time I go out and.more than a few times in between,

    Another great video and it appears you had a great day to be out shooting. One interesting phenomena I notice with longer lenses is a “stutter” when pressing the shutter button particularly for moving subjects. This results in the subject jumping slightly in the EVF frame which I am told is attributable to the VR system. I don’t see this occurring in your camera feed.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm, yeah that's not usual with my z9. I don't remember noticing it with my Z8 tester either. Odd.

    Hudson. FYI this might be helpful with regards to the single/continuous issue - I have set my left dial mode to drive mode and left it there (The last icon after timer) + In Menu, Custom Controls shooting - I added RELEASE MODE to my Record Button. Now when I press the RECORD BUTTON - I can instantly switch modes. I move the SUBDIAL to select FPS and the MAINDIAL to set single, continuous, Pre release capture 30,60,120, timer etc. Its very quick and easy - works great, without needing to use my left hand or look up to set the left mode dial from single to continuous or anything else).

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure it's possible to burn a programmable button or i-menu slot, but really? Should we have to do that after we already switch banks?

    • @Photographersforyou
      @Photographersforyou ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto its up to you and all depends how much you need it, I use it all the time on the fly, for pre capture and single shot etc, as the dial on the left with a big lens that needs to be held by the lens with my left hand is just inconvenient and difficult for me.

    I’m pretty sure if you set the shooting dial to the multi page looking icon, it will save the shooting mode you select in the i menu or via a function button. Mine is set that way and changing banks saves each choice but you have to have the dial turned all around.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      No sadly that does not work. Drive mode is not in the shooting menu or the custom settings menu so that redundant button method (which is the only method in the z8) is absolutely not saved to the banks. But it should be.

    • @hans6304
      @hans6304 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi guys do you find this will make Z8 shooters to be more hassled or to slow shooting processes? The Z8 doesn't have the fps burst dial, so hope we'll get a snappy workaround. Cheers!

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John, Thanks for the kind words. I showcase that ability in the first part of this video using my standard mode. The problem is that it's not contained in the Banks and I'd much rather be able to switch to single point while in my action tracking mode than burn that RSFH capability in my action bank on drive mode. Also the moment you change a setting you'll lose that RSFH drive mode and be back to whatever drive mode you were in before. It's a really dumb oversight that's Z system wide... The other cameras with User modes also do not save drive mode in those user modes. Should be simple to firmware solve, but alas...

    I'm a Nikon Z shooter, kiter and beginning foiler [kite foiler], also mtb, climb and ski as you do. Been watching your channel for years, going back to F mount days. Your content is super helpful in so many photographic and life affirming ways. But this is a kiting question. Wondering where this launch is? Thanks for your Custom Settings and Shooting Menu banks help, I finally got them all set up! Standard, Portrait, Macro, Action. Big wish list item - allow us to "link" Custom and Shooting banks so they can be changed together. I never change one without the other.
    Question - Auto Area AF vs 3D tracking - assuming Subject Detection is on for both, when would you choose one over the other. Or simply put, with 3D Tracking, why ever use Auto Area?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      How about one set of "profiles" that cover every camera setting including the my menu and drive modes. Make them individually savable. Let's say 6-8 of them? Have them store internally, but be exportable and importable to the cards. Finally, save them as fixed reference points, but allow them to be tweaked as needed in a shoot and stay that way until you move out of them and move back. In other words, you could alter settings and turn the camera on and off without losing your alterations but move from your standard to profile to action and back and the profile would be restored to its original settings. That would rock!

      That's in here actually and in my setup video. I rarely feel the need, but I keep the z9s Fn3 programmed for the same action. On the Z8, you'd have to burn fn1 or fn2 to do the same. I think I used fn2 in the z8 setup video in the Bank B action setup.

    Fantastic ability to deconfuse the setting of my Z8. I can now better utilize the leading edge locked inside it's technology/magic. I just wish there was an easy way to lock in the banks, so that when I try new setting, I can get them back, if I shut off the camera.

    Thanks for the video, very informative, as always! I just don't understand why Nikon doesn't program Drive mode as well as shooting Mode (M, A, S, P) into the Banks, or Ux for other cameras. Is there some limitation, or they just decide not to. I flip between M and A for certain situations, it would be nice if this is part of the Bank setup.

    I cannot get why Nikon and some others don't understand that in most cases left hand is on the lens and they keep placing controls on the left-top side of the camera :) I have a Z50 and really like that I can have 2 user modes on the right side, which I can quickly switch without taking my hand off the lens. This solution seems to be much more professional than the stuff they do in their professional cameras. Even with Z6 and Z7 they put the dial mode on the left which is worse, but still can be operated with the right hand somehow. Also Nikon seems to not realize that since the beginning of digital era there are 3 parameters of the exposure triangle that can be changed, so why stubbornly not give as the 3rd dial, where one can program ISO or EC. One thing that I love about Nikon that they don't make flip out screens and hoping that this will not change.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      God I long for a flip out screen. Couldn't disagree more. I hate the 2 axis screens on the Z8 & 9. Fragile and a pain in the not with an l-bracket. The ZFc and Z30 give you any angle you want, plus they fold in reversed to protect the lcd between shoots. I'm rooting against you on that one.

      Great explanation of focus options Hudson. Wondering how you find using Z800 mm lens on Z9 when birding as I am constantly having to manually focus to place focus point in the zone otherwise the lens just will not focus. Once in focus tracking is spectacular especially with 3D.I use hybrid technique and lens memory position to speed up the focusing but sometimes the lens just cannot find any focus point.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah totally. The fn3 button on the Z8 is different sorry. Yes, you need to pick fn1 or 2. The Z9 has three up front to the z8's two. Sorry. My bad. You wouldnt want it up there with the left hand though. In the b roll you see my right finger hitting it beside the lens in this video. I use the Z9's fn 3 button because it's easy access in horizontal as well as vertical mode with the right hand.
