- Since my first season of Power Rangers was Power Rangers Samurai, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger has always been a Sentai I wanted to check out purely to see the roots of what got me into tokusatsu. Today, I'm doing just that in my review of the sword-fighting team of Super Sentai, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger!

the fact the most of this cast went on to be megastar actors in Japan or solid character actors for Toei speaks volumes about Shinkenger.

this season will always be the best, period.
The thing about Samurai is that it was heavily toned down because the amount japanese aspect of the season plus was some aspect that were censored.
Kaoru going from the real Princess with whom Takeru has no real relation to and who later adopts him because she feels he should be the real head of the shiba clan is better to me than what Samurai did with Lauren because it doesn't have the same effect since learning that the lord they were following was actually just some random kid with a lot of mojikara feels much more powerful then him just being the second choice
As an otaku Shinkenger is one of my top three favorite sentais

I wonder if fans of Genta, after watching this video, might think twice before hating master logos. I like them already, and this just makes me like him even more. One thing, in my opinion, that would make samurai better is having Antonio try and epically fail at speaking Japanese instead of Spanish.
I liked hearing the Squid guy in Japanese because it's Brook from One Piece.

As someone who grew up with Samurai Power Ranger, I had no idea it wasn't the original version I thought it was only made in America but then again this is when I was younger and never got a single media of the Shinkenger funny enough ONLY TODAY I found out about Shinkenger and I was shocked knowing that it was the original version of Samurai! This explains why the editing felt off at times in the american version while I will always perfer my childhood I love what Shinkenger version did and the fact that in fight scene's theres less talking which makes the fights better and even though there was Super Yellow Ranger in the American version there is another episode where we see the White Super Suit go onto the Yellow Ranger which was never seen in the American version and in the Shinkenger Gold Ranger actually actives a super suit the Shark one! I wish we got that in the American version
While there are things the American version did better in my book like Master Xandereds first life defeat from Showgun Red Ranger I wish the American fight played out like the Shinkengers version of the second life Xandered fight and one last thing
In the Shinkenger fight Lord was ready for his second life but in the American version somehow the rangers heck even Jayden thought Xandered didn't have a second life.. Somehow despite fighting every other villain they somehow thought Xandered didn't have a second life.
Overall I will prefer my childhood but I respect the Shinkenger version so much knowing it is the original and fixes the editing problems for the most part and of course the Xandered fight is much better there

They even borrowed Shinken Green for Super Hero Senki (which I neither asked for nor thought I needed).
How can one be so hilariously funny when the other is so mysteriously cool? Bravo, I should've known that you're the mastermind behind all of this. Thank you, Master Logos. You are also a gold Kamen Rider.
I freaking love Shinkenger. Samurai was also my first power ranger show so when I started sentai about a decade ago this was the obvious one to start with.
I love the characters, the villains, the plot, the music, and all of the aesthetics.
This is definitely my favorite toku show overall, right ahead of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and Ultraman Geed.
I actually cried during the episode that took place on the day before and of Kotoha's birthday and Chiaki's best focus episode for me was the one with the shapeshifting gedoushu
My headcannon is that Shinken Gold got bored of being a samurai and became Master Logos. Why? Because it's funny 😹
I had no clue genta and master logos were the same person, they are not anything alike.
This, too, is all Decade’s fault.
My viewing of Samurai was always a little off since there was a weird dissonance of having a very Japanese theming but not having a majority Japanese cast especially since it's set in Japan. At the very least, a Japanese actress should have been cast as Lauren, the head of a Japanese samurai clan. In that case the audience would go "Oh that's why the head of a Japanese household isn't Japanese" when Jayden was shown to be a stand in.
That's exactly how I was before watching Boukenger (as Operation Overdrive was my first season of PR)
I hope shout factory makes a dvd set for shinkenger if I would definitely will buy it.

shinkenger by far my favorite sentai season, very well written
It's far far superior to PRS in my opinion (as are the toys) - and this show got me into Sentai. I never liked PR much at all - but this was the first Sentai I watched and got me into the Toku genre. It never seems to get that much attention though. It's one of the best series for weebs due to its strong Japanese theme.
Can you update on your thoughts so far on Zenkaiger? I really am interested on your thoughts.
I hope you do a review of Gokaiger. That was my first Sentai series.

Wow they kept a surprising amount of the shinkenger story in samurai, and by that I mean any at all, power rangers doesn't usually do that

Then we saw Genta use those same facial expressions to act maniacally and be a completely different swordsman.
Shinkenger was one of my top favorites along with Gokaiger.
Shinkenger is my second favorite season for a reason.
I did not realize that Gold was Master Logo until you pointed it out! Yes, I don't read the casting list by the way. All I wonder now is what other actors/actresses that I've seen so certain show appeared on other series/movies I've watched?
Also Mako's mother was played by the same actress that played Masaki Miki in Gekiranger/Kiramager
And Kotoha's actress also played another roll as Shelly in the recent Gavan movie and crossover with Go-Busters

I personally didn't think Akumaro was that good of a villain because he just wasn't around for that long. If he had been introduced a little earlier I probably would've liked him more.
you know who I actually completely dislike: Tanba(basically Kaoru's caretaker) he just is annoying as heck and not even Kaoru likes to put up with his rants and then he goes and insults Genta and Takeru and I cannot stand him
Tanba served a narrative purpose of traditional norms while being the bad guy in the whole Shinken Red cover-up reveal. He wasn’t there just to be there, but, yes, he desevers the hate.
Samurai wasn’t my first rangers season but Shinkenger was my first sentai season watched it after RPM cause power rangers was rumored canceled at the time and wanted more in my life lol was very disappointed in Samurai when it came out.
Thomas where do you watch these shows. Would love to know as I want to watch shows like these!

The plot twist with the red Ranger sucked in samuria. Why one big reason very bad timing happened way to late in the American dubb she ih what the last what 3 our 4 episode. I still can’t believe they screwed up the opening credits to the first episode of the American dubb Antonio was supposed to a mid series twist yet the showed him in the intro of the first episode. Bulk and spike were handled better there in ever episode of samurai and super samuria except the pilot episode:

Samurai might be one of the worst examples of power ranger adaptations since they made it too similar to the original while at the same time making it dumber.
Ignorant guy sees Saber have Juzo and Genta's actors, have suits that have "main colors" with a red main character and blue secondary character, Characters that have swords as their main weapons and Genta's actor have a gold suit

@@thomasjujube Yeah I can agree with that. Akumuro's shows his mysteriousness while Serrator's shows how menacing he can actually be. I personally prefer Serrator's cause I love a good voice actor lol. Plus, Samurai was my intro to PR as well, and Serrator was the highlight of the season for me
I prefer Deker and PR Dayu's relationship in Samurai when compared to Juzo and Usakawa Dayu's. The expanded background between the two in PR is one of the few things that Samurai did better in regards to Shinkenger.
Powers rangers Samurai is just a copy and paste of shinkenger
IMO the issue with Samurai has always been the weird vibe of having white people going extremely japanese stories.
These stories have a context that is kinda lost.
