My family and i were just received into the Eastern Orthodox Church this year. Of all the schismatics, the Old Believers have my deepest sympathy. From the little understanding that i have, it seems that this schism could have been avoided with some patience and grace. Again, we are new to all of this, but it seems that this conflict can be resolved in our lifetime. I pray that the old believers can be restored to the Russian Orthodox Church and have priests and sacraments restored. Lord have mercy on us all!
They have their own Russian Old Believers Orthodox Church and their own Patriarch is located in Moscow. And they keep quite friendly relations with Russian Orthodox Church.
My understanding is that the reforms were done under the idea that Russian Orthodoxy had diverged from the more pure Greek, but that recent scholars have found that it was in fact the Greek practice that had evolved and the Russian had remained much more archaic prior to the reforms. It is a great shame they don't have a priesthood and thus can't partake in the sacraments.
more like orthodox protestants. amish do not use modern technology(aka electricity and heavy machines) - the old believers have no problem with that, only with the official orthodox church after the greek reforms and the lithurgy broght with them after the fall of constantinople

That is an amazing film - thank you. I would guess it were made around 1989 roughly. The Ukrainians who interviewed the family in Russian were very respectful and the film is a wonderful description of their lives. It would be good to see them in 2023 too. At least in Canada they are not being sent to prison camps or killed. If their religion is not strong enough to resist plenty rather than famine, to resist wordliness then it is not a strong religion. In democracy they are free. If they were in an isolated part of the US in some states they could home school. (Similarly they could here in the UK) so if they want to be more apart that is probably possible if they were to move where state schooling were not compulsory. [ Ah I just saw a question answered -when was this made - at 1988. My 1989 was a very good guess] The children are also so beautiful and healthy. Good luck to them all
What a beautiful film! Thank you so much! I am crying at the end, because I fear what will come, we have obtained to much wealth, and we lost our faith....
All you need to do is believe in Jesus and repent. It's not faith in people and or rituals. It's about Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior you are washed by His blood.

According to Russian Old Rite Orthodoxy, the involvement of ordained priests and bishops is considered necessary. You must follow the 7 sacraments of Christ. For instance, following confession, the prayer of absolution from an ordained priest is believed to be indispensable for the forgiveness of sins. Additionally, the act of taking Communion, regarded as a central covenant in Christianity, is deemed essential. There's concern that those not adhering to these practices may miss out on crucial elements of their faith, leading to a sense of disappointment in their chosen path and be deceived and going to hell for there displacement of the scriptures' that has been written by God.
From what I can tell, the old believers aren’t a unified denomination. Some of them are priestless because they believe that all validly ordained priests and bishops went extinct in the years following the reform
I wonder if they all have the peace of God in their hearts. It is possible as they dont have the perils of the world. I would hope they are loving and kind parents too. After living in the world starting with going the wrong way because of childhood trauma I know there is only peace in following Jesus Christ. But it is not an easy path as some would have you believe.

Thank you very much for this wonderful documentary! It is very likely that families in this movie are originating from the same settlements in Siberia were my ancestors are from (they were Old Believers as well). Thank God these people were able to survive communist terror and all the wars before finally settling in a free country! Hopefully, none of them will ever buy into modern day cursed putin's propaganda hunting the Old Believers throughout the world and trying to convince them to "repatriate" to the cursed "russian federation". Unfortunately, quite few of the Old Believer families from Brazil and Oregon were caught by that propaganda and went there... Very sad.

The persecution these folks have faced is unjust and abhorrent. At the same time, this is proof of what happens when you live in such an isolated version of the Orthodox faith. The way the Russian practice evolved to be separate from Byzantine practice demanded reformation. The Byzantine way of doing things is the standard of Orthodox practice (even acknowledging variations that exist like different typica, et cetera). The way that reform was handled wasn't great and it was radicalizing--to the point that these folks see even Athonite-style Orthodoxy as errant and devilish.
'Demanded reformation'? Why on earth would you say that? Rus had insulated itself against the Turkish and Roman practices in the Greek Church. Look at the state of both Churches now (Greece and Rome), they are completely Modernist and have handed themselves over to the Antichrist. At least Rome don't say a 4th Alleluia for the Sultan!
Jesus told us to be in the world but not of it. Only the Lord knows whose heart is his. We are living in end times. The world as it now exists will be destroyed.

The western church (at least)…has climbed into bed with empire so long ago that non of us really realise just how far we are from being true followers of Christ. Just look at the rise of “Christian” nationalism in the US these days. Is this really the sermon on the mount? Jesus himself said many will call out my name but I will not know them. The Holy Spirit stirred within me when I was a young boy in the 1980’s…I have been baptised and consider myself a follower of Jesus ever since but I am constantly wrestling with trying to be a true follower of Jesus while living in the midst of empire. This has increased in recent years especially now I have a family of my own. I am convinced after 30 years of saying I am a Christian I still have a long way to go to being a true follower of Jesus. Just as most of the church has in order to be able to call itself the true body of Christ. But I have a hope that one day this will happen.
This is an unexpected gem . A great documentary.
