    This isn't a film reference admittedly, but a couple of years ago in the bbc series Call The Midwife, there was an episode which showed the characters watching the first episode of doctor who being aired. Then a few years later in the doctor who episode The Tsuranga Conundrum, Ryan and Graham had a conversation about watching Call The Midwife whilst they helped to deliver a characters baby. I really liked this and also found it quite funny. Happy New year Who Culture! 😊🎉

      NCIS and Big Bang Theory were similar.
      NCIS had an episode where DiNozzo recognized the episode of Big Bang Theory playing in a hotel room during an investigation.
      Big Bang Theory had an episode where Penny flirts with Mark Harmon for a minor scene in an episode of NCIS that gets cut out

      It wasn’t quite the first episode; it was _The Aztecs_ (1964), the show’s sixth story.
      The main thing that bugs me about that scene (even now!) is that they’re clearly watching the second episode of the story (as the cliffhanger reprise is the first thing we see after the titles), yet Sister Monica Joan is discussing the events of the previous episode as if they only just happened a few minutes ago.

    The Dalek's appearance in the Loony Tunes movie almost led to the Daleks not returning to Doctor Who in the revied show. The estate of Terry Nation, who owned the copy right to the Daleks were not happy with the Daleks appearing in the movie without their permission.

      John Byrne kept slipping in references to the Doctor in Marvel since he worked on Power Man & Iron Fist. They meet an “odd fellow” whose shop disappears at the end of the story. Later, in F4, Reed Richards drops the occasional reference, and in one issue did while noting he knew a young woman’s grandfather, “Prof. Jones” while they were at a dig on Moon/Mars-?
      His spin off from X-Men, Alpha Flight’s first arch nemesis was “The Master of the World”, a Cro-Magnon man elevated to a high intellect cyborg by a crashed spaceship. Black body suit and rubbish beard were obvious nods to Koschei and the first DW serial.

    Not contesting that Who may have been the first to use the phrasing "reverse the polarity", but since then has been utilized so prolifically in all forms of sci-fi (especially Star Trek) that it's just a trope of the genre as a whole now rather than a direct reference.

      @@mastere6115 To be fair, as far as Star Trek goes its probably the same as how the exact phrase "Beam me up Scotty" was never used, but over the decades Trek has used lots of technobabble where "reversing" and "polarity" were key components.

      @schubertuk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn't lessen the Doctor Who influence by being successful. The references in ST:TNG were often proven to be intentional (and the Doctor's actors were actually listed on a screen in one episode), and many US sci-fi writers have admitted to watching Doctor Who.

    • @CaptainSouthbird
      @CaptainSouthbird ปีที่แล้ว

      It's worth nothing that "reversing polarity" has also actual electrical meaning with nothing to do with sci-fi. Electrical devices with "polarity", i.e. positive and negative electrical inputs, supplied the opposite way is reverse polarity. I never saw Cars 2 and I'm just taking this at face value, but what that scene appears to be is that the mechanism about to crush the cars is being driven by a DC motor, which will turn the opposite direction if you in fact reverse its polarity. Unless there was more to that dialog (e.g. "... of the neutron flow"), I'm willing to bet that wasn't actually a reference to Doctor Who or sci-fi at all. Literally electrically speaking reversing the polarity in the real world meaning of that term.

    If Peter Jackson is such a big Doctor Who fan, then IMHO there's no way the appearance of the Uruk-Hai in his movies weren't a tip of the hat to/inspired by the Ogrons.

    • @schubertuk
      @schubertuk ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no doubt on the "if". Peter has said so numerous times, and put money where his mouth is when buying old Doctor Who props.
      Whether they did directly influence the Urak-Hai is another matter, but I will concede there are definite simlarities.

    • @Shippou011
      @Shippou011 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Given that the Uruk-Hai are based on the Isengard Orcs (which were said to be more intelligent, able to communicate properly/effectively, and potentially were the result of humans and orcs breeding) it's more likely that it's the other way around - Ogrons being inspired by Isengard Orcs.
      Although the fact that the name blatantly suggests that Ogrons are some kind of *Ogre* it's probably just a case of 'great minds.'

    8:00 The connection between Doctor Who and Transformers goes all the way back to the 1980's thanks to the Marvel multiverse. A character called Death's Head debuted in Marvel UK's Transformers (killing Bumblebee in his first story) before meeting the seventh Doctor a few times before the Doctor strands him on top of the Fantastic Four building in the main Marvel 616 comics universe.
    In one issue of Marvel UK's Transformer comic there is a Decepticon called Octus who transforms into a Dalek.
    And 1986's The Transformers the Movie is the best Transformers film.
    Plus more Marvel references are a organisation called W.H.O. aka the Weird Happenings Organisation which is a British Military organisation set up by the twins Alistaire and Alysande Stuart named for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

    Saving the day by reversing the polarity has become just a general scifi trope. I could go on with a very long list of times it’s shown up in movies and tv shows. I’m not sure if that comes from the 3rd doctor’s catchphrase or not, but it definitely is a thing

    • @schubertuk
      @schubertuk ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I think Doctor Who has a much bigger credit for this phrase than you are allowing. Jon Pertwee was struggling to remember the constant technobabble in the scripts for Doctor Who until The Sea Devils where he was given the line "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" - which he found very easy to roll of his tongue. So much so he asked the producers to use this line (or variants of it) as much as possible. Both the show runners and Jon Pertwee repeated this story in interviews throughout the 70s, 80s & 90s. Yes, from this point other shows did occasionally reference it, but that is in homage to Doctor Who. So to assert it is "just" a general sci-fi trope requires surely a little more justification?

    • @jaziybabe
      @jaziybabe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@schubertuk you misunderstood what I was saying. She was crediting it in just one film and I’m saying it’s way bigger than that and has become a scifi trope. I was just saying I personally can’t say that it was started from Dr. Who, but it sounds like that is probably the case :)
