I learned to play this around 1980 but near as well as you. It's almost unrecognizable when played slow, so much filler mixed in the melody but sounds so good at full speed. Earl was amazing.
Several experienced players tell me our shoulder strap should run under the head brackets around the bottom of our banjos to each side. Weight and tug on the brackets can loosen or damage the bracket and head tightness!
When my grandma bought me my piece of crap banjo when I was 15, I taught myself how to play dueling banjos from that stupid movie, I'd like to see you do a rendition of that it'd be fun to see.

That's a cradle strap, which is what I have. They work very well.

I did a video of that with a friend a little over a year ago. We definitely put our own twist on it though 🤣
