I actually don't mind the extra history add-on for Hydra. The original concept of what the Red Skull and the SHIELD/Hydra modern-day were all about is still the same and not messed with. You can cut it right up to Hydra forgetting about it's original purpose and become what it was in the last one hundred years.

TJ Jordan Although Pierce was more interested in a military takeover, I suspect that Whitehall knew more about the Terrigen crystals and the kree fortress than people thought he did. It's possible that he knew that the temple was designed to give inhuman powers but also thought the temple would enhance the effect like what happened when daisy dumped the crystals into the ocean. There is also the myth of the missing spanish soldiers simmons mentioned in 2x09. it is similar to the information about hive and the portal to his planet prison, and a helmet similar to those worn by spanish soldiers in the 17th century was found by jemma in the no fly zone.

I remember when I first time see Hydra in “Captain America” it was surprise it was portrayed as Nazi organisation because in comics Hydra is very ancient but OK perhaps MCU is happening on different Earth with another variant of history. And that scene finally revealed what was missing till that point and that MCU haven’t derived much from Comics.

  • @srayj

    Spoiler...
At 1:57 the music that plays is the “song” that Izel sings at the end of season 6 to open the portal with the monoliths. I just thought it was a song she sang for that episode, I had no idea that it was a callback to this scene and the orchestration used when Malick pulled the piece of monolith out. I love the MCU for its continuity, but I didn’t realize that AoS was so good at maintaining it too!

Man. Such possibilities in this one scene. Especially with Grant. I was hoping he was going to become Taskmaster. Instead we got that BS black widow movie version. If you look at the second sigil, that is reminiscent of Taskmasters' shield. Also. I know Taskmaster is supposed to be Anthony Masters. But who is to say that at some point Grant doesn't go through the T.A.H.I.T.I program by Nick Fury. Warren said it himself, he wanted him dead but then saw him as an asset after seeing what he can do. After a period of time, Anthony remembers who he is and becomes a freelancer and tries to build his own version of hydra, much like what he was doing earlier this season. To destroy Shield and get revenge on the people that took everything from him.

I'm not really a fan of the concept of HYDRA being a cult over thousands of years old. I liked the WWII concept better; a branch in the Nazi science division that severed ties to the Third Reich because it believed it could do better than the Nazis did. Remember, the Nazis, the Thule Society, they were into some wicked stuff to achieve ultimate power; both through science and through sorcery. HYDRA, as the science division, would have experimented not only with advanced weaponry, but with alien technology and with objects supposedly imbued with supernatural power like they believed the Tesseract was.
I do like the reveal of the HYDRA symbol in the picture, though. If it had been the symbol of a peace keeping task force that was allied with SHIELD for the longest time (convincing Hirohito to surrender the war, preventing all out war during the Cold War, causing the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union, cleaning up Chernobyl, tearing down the Berlin Wall, etc) but then Fitz and Simmons reveal the symbol upside down and inverted to be the symbol of HYDRA.
