Wonderful memories watching WNET. Channel 13, of Newark, New Jersey. I lived on Long Island, New York, from 1976 to 1986. That terrific station logo using the word "Thirteen" was designed by the great New York City graphic designer Milton Glaser.

Really enjoyed the promotional song "Positively New Jersey" from NJN 1:30:37 (sing along) The de-funded defunct New Jersey Network, which started "New Jersey Public Broadcasting". I remember the test pattern on the UHF dial before the first broadcast.

Remember the signoff at 1:22:51. In January 1983, the Iowa Public Television network began operations; prior to the launch of the network the PBS stations in Iowa were operated as part of the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network (later the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network), which lasted from 1970 until December 1982. Upon the launch of the network in 1983, the original continuity announcer was Mike Lewis, who would then go on to work with many commercial television stations across America.

The musical piece playing during the WILL-TV Urbana, Illinois (36:11) sign off is "Morning Tears" by MFSB. They used this piece for YEARS and YEARS.

(0:00 to 15:29 - First Edit; The music on 10:04 and 13:36 made me too tired to continue after the first 12...)
(15:50 to 17:51 - Second Edit; couldn't do that much today, as I need to finish something.)
0:00 KCET 28 - I don't know from when this was from, but I'll guess 1976 because of the America theme.
2:05 KYUK(-TV, now -LD) 4 (now 15) - I didn't even know Bethel had a PBS station... This is from the late 70's.
3:50 WYES 12 - Is that a picture of NOFC (New Orleans Flight Club)?
4:59 Nebraska ETV - This shows various scenes across the Midwest. And no, there isn't a station missing; KRNE was the last to sign on in December 1968.
    7:28 WOUB 20 - This showed a tour of WOUB's studio in 1979.
    8:44 WTTW 11 - Chicago skyline
    9:28 KCET 28 - This is from March 28, 1978.
10:04 KLCS 58 - Shoot that music is calming... *yawn*
    11:03 KCTS 9 - Another studio tour
13:36 KCET 28 (Yep 3 times already and we're not even 1/7 into the video) - *yawn* This music is really making me sleepy...
14:37 WNED 17 - This is from 1980. The entire sign off is 3 minutes & 31 seconds long.
    15:29 & 15:50 WNET 13 - I think I included either of these in a video of mine...I don't remember too clearly.
16:18 WYES 12 - PBS stations will sometimes show scenes from their serving area. What you see is a sunset from New Orleans.
17:24 KLRN 9/KLRU 18 - Nothing much to say here. Just your typical sign off.
17:51 KLTM 13 - I wish LPB brought these back in some way as a station id...
19:00 WNET 13 - Ooh nice skyline pic!
19:42 KOCE 50 - What kinda plant is that?

This is what I was hoping to find! I grew up watching WILL-TV, and I always found the sign-off a bit spooky. The languid jazz tune, the crooked slide with the weird lighting...just gave me the creeps somehow.

@@LifeinAnalog The jazzy tune from the WILL-TV Urbana-Champaign, Illinois sign-off is "Morning Tears" by MFSB, and these Telop slides were used in the conclusion of WILL-TV's day of TV Worth Watching.

History of PBS is much more complicated than that. It began as a loose series of non-commercial public-supported stations, often from colleges or larger cities during the 50's and 60's.

This was PBS's campaign theme in the late 80's, many stations often used this with their own ID's.
