Unboxing Michigan: What It's Like Living In Michigan

  • Why the heck would anyone want to live in Michigan? Well, we're about to show you exactly what.
    Does Michigan have the best blueberries on earth?
    Is it true that there’s a lake monster that lives in Lake Erie?
    And where the hell did all of the car makers go?
    We’re gonna answer those questions and more.
    So, take out both hands and get ready to show everyone which part of the state you’re from, as we get ready to unbox the great state of Michigan.
    Michigan almost touches Canada, but the two are separated entirely by water of some sort.
    As far as the residents of the geographically complicated state are concerned, there are two Michigans. Michigan, and Northern Michigan.
    There’s a lot of Packer fans, eskimos, huge mosquitos, and drinkers way up here.
    They get a lot of snow up here - about 80 inches a year in many parts. Michigan as a state has the third most hunters per capita, where 1 in 10 residents hunts. But in the UP, 100% of the people hunt. Even the women!
    The opposite of that is Detroit. It’s one of the worst places in the country. That’s undeniable. Of course, Detroit people will remind you that their city is trying to make a comeback, which is true. Certain areas of downtown look much better, and going back to 1985, Detroit’s violent crime rate has come down dramatically.
    And of course, there’s Flint, which also struggled to stay economically relevant when car companies left the state. Flint is always towards the top five in America in terms of dangerous cities per capita. To make matters worse, Flint’s municipal water supply is...lacking in drinkability, and has been for years.
    The Great Lakes contain more than 80 percent of North America’s-and more than 20 percent of the world’s-surface fresh water supply. Many Michigan residents boat on these lakes and jump off into them from tall rocks.
    There are quite a few nice beaches in Michigan, especially along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The coastal community of Grand Haven is charming. Saugatuck is famous for its beach dunes. Traverse City was once called the second best small town travel destination in America. They also make cherries here.
    The rest of Michigan is pretty boring. Lots of country roads, rolling hills and trees. Outside of a handful of metro areas like Grand Rapids, Lansing and Battle Creek, it’s Just a bunch of Euchre players.
    Michigan makes cereal and milk, that’s cool. It’s also the 7th biggest exporter in the US, and is a leader in producing blueberries, corn, soybeans, grapes and apples.
    Michigan is situated smack-dab in the midwest which means weird whether patterns, and freaky storms. They get so much snow, they use what are called Yooper Scoopers to move the piles of snow off their rooves so they don’t cave in.
    Michigan’s weather is quite diverse. Ask any Michigander what the weather is like, and it’s hard to tell, since it changes so often.
    What about the sports in Michigan? Well, football season is a big deal, where most of the southern part of the state cares about the Lions, while the UP roots on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.
    Of course, being in a state with frozen lakes everywhere, you’d expect hockey to be huge here - in fact, there are more kids who play hockey in Michigan than in any other state. As such, there are lots of Red Wings fans everywhere here.
    But that’s nothing compared to the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. Everyone in Michigan does not like Ohio State.

When it gets to winter, there's like tons of snow. Last year, we had like snow almost 5 days a week and it was super cold. Not a Michigander, a Californian that went to college in Michigan and wow, what a beautiful state. Came in August, heard about the humidity, but it wasn’t too bad at the end of August, then fall weather and foliage, I would just walk in awe at the orange foliage and the beauty of fall, we don’t really have a change of seasons in California, it’s 100 degrees or 60 degrees throughout the year and were happy if we get snow in the mountains and some rain in the valleys. But--Then came December and being from California, even our ski resorts are not that type of cold. It was a cold that burned, it burned to inhale, and I was told by Michiganders that this was just the beginning of winter, nonetheless, transferred next semester. Most people think California is this beautiful state, but I disagree, Michigan is far more beautiful.

    • @uvhciM
      @uvhciM 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      While what you say is true regarding northern Michigan, it's not really accurate regarding the Detroit area, which sees less average snowfall each year than Boston. In fact, Detroit doesn't even make it on the list of top 25 snowiest US cities (though the area is definitely #1 for most complaining about snow). Next, while it was true in the 1970s and 1980s that snow sat on the ground a long time in the winter in the area, it now usually melts in a 2 days to 1 week. Even this last January was roughly 8 days of rain to a mere 2 days of snow (which again, melted quickly), with numerous daytime highs in the 40s. How exactly is that "brutal"? Some years are a bit worse, but most are just common jacket and a hat weather in the day.

    • @colinmacdonald5732
      @colinmacdonald5732 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's an impressive difference between Detroit and Isle Royale, about the same as that as between London and Reykjavik. Detroit may seem brutal but up there it's almost Arctic.

    • @ericwilson2585
      @ericwilson2585 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well I live in Pellston, and they call it the "icebox of the nation". And we sit right in the jet stream that always comes right straight down out of Canada. But it has to cross over Lake Michigan first, so we get what's called "lake effect snow showers". I remember once when I was a kid, we had a car sitting in our front yard and one morning we woke up and I looked out of the front window of our house and the car was no longer even visible, and it didn't turn back up again until about mid March. It's a good thing it was a fairly new car because if it would have been 10 years or older it would have been so rusted out it would have literally disintegrated the car. That's Michigan for those of ya who don't know.

    Native Michigander - you missed a few things...
    Auto makers were holding their own until NAFTA sold us out. That's when the auto plants started moving out of Michigan. You highlighted Michigan State University playing basketball, but failed to mention University of Michigan being a leader in sports AND having one of the best hospitals in the Midwest.
    The map about Flint being the only community that drinks bottled water was a cheap shot and inaccurate. I'm sure it was unintentional, but considering the seriousness of the lead poisoning that has taken place in Flint, it was uncalled for. Also, sadly, there are MANY residents in Michigan that have to drink bottled water or use reverse osmosis systems. Michigan has naturally high arsenic levels in many areas of the state. And pollution was widespread from manufacturing and also old oil wells that were not properly closed or were sites of illegal dumping, etc.
    Michigan might be the site of 20% of the world's fresh water, but sadly, its drinkable water is declining.

      @@NickJohnson Well first of, thanks for asking. I'm 19 years old and I have lived in this area my entire life. Same house same school district, it is all I know. I am not afraid to admit it. I'm lucky and very fortunate to have been able to remain in one house up until this very moment. With that being said, I love it here! It has changed a lot since I was a kid. The city grows everyday. I live more in the suburb/outer areas of GR, but I am no stranger to the actual city. There will always be struggles within these bounds. It is how a city faces adversity which defines them as a whole. Grand Rapids is the place to be nowadays! (weed is legal here now too!) :)

    Thanks Nick for the video. You did a awesome job hitting the main facts. I'm definitely proud of my state. Want to add another fact about our Great Lakes and its a important one. There is a estimated 6000 shipwrecks with over 30,000 lifes lost. Kinda takes away the complex parts of our state away if you think of all the lives lost and ships laying the bottom of our lakes. Oh and Nick ease up on the Lions. They're not too bad this year ;-)

      I want to explore the bottom of a lake and see what's down there! And I wrote that a month ago before the season started. But just wait - they'll come back to normal again ;)

      WHAT? The lions suck. They just lost 4 of their last 5. Stafford has a broken back. They are the lions. The picture of the lions fans and their shriveled hot dogs was priceless. I am a lions fan for 45 years so I know better than to have any hope for them.

    I like Michigan because it’s one of the few states with 6 professional teams- counting Michigan and Michigan State. Most states either have only college, only pro, or none.
    And Detroit is nice, but the best city in Southeast Michigan is Ann Arbor. There is a lot going on thanks to the university, businesses like Dominoes, etc.
    Detroit hit rock bottom and it will get better over time. Especially with the Red Wings and Pistons moving in town, along with Dan Gilbert investing in properties.
    As a Flint native, that’s the one city I don’t see getting better anytime soon. But I still love it- very nice, humble people who work hard and don’t have an ounce of arrogance in them.
    And the UP is beautiful. Love going up there
