    What a pleasant surprise to see a girl interested in what most of us thought, it's a man's domain!
    Wonderful set up and great sound, it just proves vintage equipment can sound as good (if not better) than some of the overpriced (many times junk) equipment they're trying to sell us now.
    Keep up the great work young lady, I just love your comfortable manner in putting hi fi items together, AND your accent!

    Great setup!!! We are the very limited group of people who are happy with these stuffs rather than wasting our time on the smartphones. Cheers from Kolkata, India.

    You are the first hifi-enthuastic woman I´ve ever seen. Never understood why so few women are into Hifi. Very nice Vintage setup! I began with Hifi when I was 11 (building speakers) and collected 70s Vintage Hifi. Now I´m 32 and still at it. :)

    Hi Ms Mad, nice vintage system. I had the same problem in 1978 with ad-ons. I was happily using a Pioneer SX-650 receiver with two tape loops (alas only one way dubbing). It sufficed my two cassette deck needs. I moved up to a Hitachi SR-804 receiver in 1979 with bidirectional dubbing facilities and that was even more flexible. Until I added a Teac X-3 open reel deck. I didn't want to use a switching box like you did. I up graded my equalizer in 1982 to an ADC Sound Shaper Two IC. The equalizer has bidirectional dubbing (it handles two decks). I was able to connect the EQ to tape monitor 2 (with both cassette decks) on the receiver and into tape monitor 1 I connected my Pioneer RG-2 expander with the X-3 reel to reel connected to the RG-2. I can switch from any deck in any combination. I've used this set up for 35 years now and it works for me. Bet I was using hifi equipment before you were born, lol.
    A very informative and interesting video. Thanks for sharing this knowledge about the switching boxes as I'm sure some folks will find it helpful.

    Yeah, those "zip line" speaker cables you tinned a little clumpy but you got it worked out. Banana plugs do work but they also sell "Pin" connectors. They look like super thin banana connectors and give you the ability to replug speaker cables over and over again without wear.Great video! I havnt done any of that analog production stuff since 1990 Video Production college and working at the cable station that had a Amiga 1000. I miss those days. It was nice to hear and watch you play with that vintage equipment while I am hanging out in my new travel trailer at Columbine Campground near Red River ski village which is north of Sante Fe. I get 3G here with my Cell phone Booster installed. Been watching your TH-cam video's all night!

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those speaker wires were so hard to tin, I couldnt believe how long it took me to just tin one wire! Even with a lot of flux. So I just cut and did it normally. I thought i'd try the suggestion which was being advised by quite a few people in the last Hi-Fi setup video. Those thin banana connectors aren't a bad idea actually.
      Nice! I hope you're enjoying your time out there! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! Thanks! :o)

    Awesome setup Ms. Mad!!! I really love the shots of the 1/4 open reel machine, but then again, I have a soft spot for those devices! Also love your DPaint diagram. Too much fun! Excellent work! -- Bill

      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bill! Yes I can see by the books you showed me that you have a soft spot for hi-fi and audio. The reel to reel machines are really something else as you know, i'm so glad I managed to get hold of this one. It was a lot of fun using Dpaint, really. Thank you Bill! I think you will also enjoy the retro computer set up too, you got a little mention in that.

    Nice system. Right now I have my old Aiwa NSX 3500 mini home theater system. D manufacture date was August 1997. I use one of those Bluetooth cassette player adapters. It's a cassette tape with the Bluetooth built-in. So even if your belts are shot you can still use it, along with yours Dolby noise reduction and karaoke functions. if you have a duel decks . you can use two of them to run two different devices wirelessly. Some systems were so simple you could play two tapes at the same time. a useless function unless you have those Bluetooth adapters and two devices playing music. You can feed the volume in and out independently on each one device.

    Nice to see a woman playing with this stuff. You could call this Audiophile system at least partly. Those audio switch boxes do not look very good thou, too many connection adding to resistance in the signal path. But what can you do with limited connections.

    What you have accomplished with 2 switch boxes is quite a feat. I want to point out that back in the day, dbx made switch boxes that do exactly what you've done here. The model 200 had inputs and outputs for 3 tape decks, 3 effects boxes and the routing capability to allow the tape decks to record to each other.

    Radio Shack / Tandy made a specialised input box for tape decks which you might want to look for. Allows for recording between several devices.
    I've got two switch boxes on my system for several SACD players feeding into two 2 Channel amplifiers.

    Damn, where have you been all of my life? I've never met a female that actually would want to thread an open reel tape. Not joking. I was sold within the first 10 seconds of the video. I had to sub because of that. So cool to see you have such passion for this kind stuff too.

    That was great. You connect your equipment like me. Oh, let's just move it even though it's connected. I just want to get on with it. But I am careful. I had one of those labelers too and used it to label all my cassette recordings.

    Good to see that your construction from the year before didn't collapse and bury you in a heap of really nice and heavy audio devices... And yea, the speaker cables are too think to be tinned and fit inside. It would work with 1.5mm²

  • @pablov1973
    @pablov1973 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cassette and Open Reel decks adds a little EQ diference between input signal that enter in the record head and output signal coming from the record playback head and one of the situation when this was more dramatically noticiable is when you tape an mp3 or some lossy audio format. Dubbing vinyls adds some sensation of more space and a subtle treble boost specially at high speed recording.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One thing I also noticed was different tape brands have a different result, Maxell and TDK Audua improve the quality, where as a bad tape sounds worse than the source. i'm figuring different tape quality and biasing affects this of course.

    Once I was doing a live mix nonstop 6 hours long. I used Hi DEF VHS i had to record just the sound. You should try it is like the reel to reel pure sound. get the good quality vhs tape. I wish i never threw away my AKAI reel.

  • @ShawnTewes
    @ShawnTewes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, I really admire your D-paint pixel art. I imagine you really spent time on that diagram. Very creative. One way to solve the problem of not being able to record between tape/md would involve using the Yamaha mixer's tape in and out RCA jacks. Rather than hooking up your "play" switch directly to the tape monitor input (play) on the smiley, run it to the tape input on your mixer. then run the tape output from the Yamaha back to the smiley's play input. Now you can choose to use your tape decks normally through the smiley's tape monitor via the mixer's tape out, or as primary sources via the mixer main out to tuner input on smiley, which can then be recorded by your deck of choice. You'll also have the added bonus of being able to digitize your tapes through your mixer to the scarlet. Only caveat is that tape monitoring would have to be done using headphones on the record deck itself when recording from tape to tape, since although you can still monitor the source deck, you cannot monitor the record deck as it's recording because you can only switch one deck at a time, and in this situation it's used as a source (through tuner input). Also, remember to turn down tape input level on mixer when recording from mixer to tape! edit: alternatively, Google "Realistic tape control center" for a single box that will do it all.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Shawn! i'm glad you liked the diagram!
      I need to work out and visualise what you're saying but after reading what you wrote, a thought came to split the output and connect one to the monitor and the other to an input of the Yamaha.
      I wonder if thats what you were getting at.

    • @ShawnTewes
      @ShawnTewes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose that could work. Tho I'd prefer not to split just because it tends to lose some signal/volume. I just realized your mixer, Yamaha MG06x, does not have tape inputs or outputs. Big oops!! In that case, yes, I suppose you could send the tape playback switch to a pair of mixer inputs. Then, since you are already using both mixer outputs (XLR to Focusrite, and 1/4" Stereo out to Receiver Aux In), you could go from mixer headphone out to tape input on receiver. This basically gives you the same result, except you'd have to unplug from mixer phones jack to use headphones on mixer. Sorry if I confused you.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only issue with making the tape completely go to the Yamaha is that I wont be able to record from the desktop computer nor the record player since each of them are to the amplifier. I kinda see what you're getting at now though. And it's all right :o)

    • @ShawnTewes
      @ShawnTewes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MsMadLemon recording from Amiga, phono and scarlet are still possible, as the record switch box would be left as is. example, switch to phono on receiver, and switch on tape monitor. from here, set playback and record switches to your desired recorder, bring up channel 5/6 on mixer, and turn up mixer phones level. You'll hear the phono coming from recorder input as normal. record signal chain: receiver record out -> record switch -> recorder of choice. play signal chain: tape player of choice -> play switch -> mixer in 5/6 -> mixer phones out -> receiver play in.

    about when you change from source to tape you´ve notice an upgrade in sound ,it always happened to me this because i started with an old pioneer deck but good one and also had a early 80´s reel to reel akai deck that was ofered to me by a german militar guy ,because where i live there was a airforce airport from germany,and a big neighbourhood inside the city where i live that had a club for germans,where they had lot´s of old equipment but high-end material, and i study electronics while in highschool so sometimes i did some easy repairs,like an stereo receiver from kenwood but gigantic and from the 70´s ,they told me that one of the output line wasn´t working ,i opened it and change a fuse and it started working again,and later with some other maintenance that i did to their equipment .this to tell you that the reel to reel akai deck that they ofered me had already those blue fluorescent metters,and when in my room walking barefoot when i touched any aluminium part of the 70´s components that i had it almost gave me a electricshock and when you connected it ,the ground connection started working so it stops that feeling that you´ve tried to discribe it´s estatic electricity(sorry for my bad english it´s not my first language)nice set up.

    • @janwiersma1449
      @janwiersma1449 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, i already did think this font was a little bit odd. i use the dymo letra-tag over here some times. but. theres a big but ;) thats not so vintage as yours. except for the fact you did not use this a-team font then.
      and my tape is short everytime i use it. now its laying empty, better remove the batteries then.
      you dont have that problem.
      btw. are you shure you checkt your speaker connection beeing ok. (off fase) i mean. we call it "in tegen fase"... i cant hear it ofcourse, but you can. just by turning the balance all the way to the left or to the right. and when there's more bass then when its in the middle, then you have to connect one speaker the other way arround. because one speaker is eating the low freakin' frequences of the other speaker like pack-man.
      but you already did knew this didn't you?

    My solution for dealing with speaker wires:
    Strip off about 20mm of the outer insulation
    Cut off 25-50% of the inner strands and twist the remaining tightly
    Tin the very end of the strands, not the entire length
    Dress the end of the insulation with heat shrink sleeving
    Sorted! :)

    Aaaaand, your favorite Beast music. Thought that one could appear. :o)
    I don't dabble in audio setups on the scale that you do, but I admit I feel attracted to it all, whenever I see your equipment. I really like the tidiness, and that everything is in order. Man, it could be sweet to just have a tape deck, at least. Make mixed tapes again. Aahh.. :o)
    I must commend you on your Deluxe Paint skills! Jim Sachs can spot you in his rear view mirror.. ;o))
    Espero que tus nudillos se sientan mejor. Haha, I hope I got that right.. ;o)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahah it's nice to use as a test recording ;o))
      You didnt recognize 14:53 ? lol no one did yet..I guess maybe not if you've not played fire and ice that much. It's another one I like, the disk version I remember reaching the underwater level and this music made me feel strange inside, but I liked. I later found the CD32 version which sounds so 80s :o)
      Disk Version: th-cam.com/video/iKozY2ER7ow/w-d-xo.html
      CD32 version: th-cam.com/video/uKZqZHKKLos/w-d-xo.html
      It is sweet making mix tapes of C64 and Amiga stuff, and it´s a must to have the Amiga going through an amplifier to enjoy it fully...Am I trying to encourage you to getting an amp and tape deck?... Possibly, only because it's awesome ;o)) lol
      i'm definitely not up to Jim Sachs standard but thanks anyway ;o)))
      Si, lo entendí, muchas gracias.

    • @CasualCommodore
      @CasualCommodore 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, never played Fire and Ice. I'm pretty sure I would have recognized it, if I had. But it sounds very nice and groovy!! CD32 is best. :o) I like your close-up shots of the bass units. Nice idea. Anyway, Fire and Ice is now noted.
      Heh, maybe you are..? Keep trying, and I may do it at some point. :o) But you know.. Money.. Space.. I once had the works. Amp. Deck. Big speakers (Jamo D265). Used that for Amiga and LaserDisc, and loved watching the 12" bass units vibrate. But priorities changed over time, and I got rid of it. The speakers stand unused at a friends apartment, though.
      I think it's fair to say, that he can spot you in the mirror, as you're definitely not talentless (is that a word?)! I'm not saying you're right beside him or overtaking him. I think my statement was fair. ;o))

    OH yeah, no, I wouldn't tin stranded speaker wire, just a couple of firm twists. That stuff's a heat sink too, only the outer strands get hot. It's like a giant wad of desoldering braid without flux in it.

    Great video Maddi. It reminded me of a time when I had Rotel separates and Mission 760i speakers. I wanted an Audiolab 8000A amplifier but couldn't afford one. Why Senor Onkyo and not Senora, or Senorita? How do you know he's a boy? :-)

    Are you happy with the quality of your audio switchers? Did you notice any signal degradation, even very small ones?
    Had I known you were shopping for switchers, I'd have had something to recommend you

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes same here! :o) it's a huge hassle do i've only done it once a year so far lol but it's enjoyable.
      So far the switchboxes are working great, I mean i looked around everywhere and coudlnt find any alternative, which would you recommend?

    • @FinalBaton
      @FinalBaton 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly recommend used Extron matrixes myself, they're the best! That's all I use, I refuse to settle for anything less haha. They're broadcast grade machines that can now be purchased for $50 or so (and sometimes lower)
      Not only do you get a perfectly clean output (no noise whatsoever, guaranteed. which gives a stickler like me peace of mind, lol), but you get the flexibility of sending any combination of input(s) to any output(s) you want. plus, you can set the sensitivity(gain) of each input individually and the volume of each output individually (very practical if you have a source that's too hot, or need to send the signal to a piece of equipment that expects a higher gain).
      The series to look for is the MAV series. Some have Phoenix type connectors for audio, but some have standard RCA jacks. They are also rack-mountable. Searching "Extron MAV RCA" in ebay should do the trick. Here's what the RCA-equipped models look like :

      Try and find a DBX 200 or DBX 400 switchbox. They take 3 x decks with recording routing between the three decks.

    Why can you not record from tape machine to another pf your recrding devices? Just select the INPUT from the reel to reel and the OUTPUT to the cassette deck (or whatever combination you desire.)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't work :o)
      The switcheboxes are not wired that way, bascially the amp is 'thanking' that all three recording devices are just a single one. There is no connection between the recording devices to be able to record from one to the other.

      BTW I love your videos. I love vintage things including Computers and Hi-Fi´s, restoring them and getting the best of them. You could make some nice wallpapers with that nice Hi-Fi setup you've got. • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually did more tests on this, it's more dynamic. It makes no difference when I record from vinyl record actually makes a perfect recording almost. But when I record from digital or Amiga etc it brings the recording to life, It also depends on the brand of tape which I use, some brands make it sound worse, some brands like TDK Audua and Maxell, make it sound better.
      The recording onto tape is doing something to the quality for sure.

    • @MsMadLemon

      Metal (type IV) is the best cassette to record on, though they are very expensive,
      Crome (type II) is decent though and most use this.
      Ferric (type I) is the most basic quality
