    Hmm I think I could do with a lend of the big weights. I don’t promise they will be as heavy when I return them. Having different height buildings from different periods is giving your layout a sense of reality. Another nice build Michael. Stephen

    I just love your work Michael and your videos on Inkscape got me really started last year. As you may know I have moved to a cutting machine in preparation for the trials of older age. Love your scalpel and rule work. All the very best Alan

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Alan. Yes, I have seen your tutorials/examples with the cutting machine. Once the scalpel is too painful/shaky for me, then I see a cutting machine on the horizon. I am hopefully a few years away from that so far. It’s great to see you in Chandwell. Your posts on Facebook over the years have been an incredible inspiration to me. You capture the real thing so well and the atmosphere that creates is plain to see. I’m trying to do similar with Chandwell, although obviously it is fictional. Thank you for watching. 👍👍👍

    Although a "tiddler" in comparison to "The Chanfield" the care and though that goes into this build is the equal of its much larger neighbour.
    This is rapidly becoming my favourite channel on YT, you deserve to have a much larger subscriber base, Michael.
    Now, I wonder what they will sell in this shop?
    Flat caps? Whippet food? Yorkshire pudding tins?
    We'll just have to wait and see.

    Dear Michael, humbly think you’ve hit the spot where you’ve built and put this ‘add-on’ construction next to your marvelous curved hotel. Working in scale, whatever the fraction or ratio, somewhat always makes us modelers prone to stick to similar ceiling heights. As a matter of fact, kits seem to that too.
    Hence, your approach of adding this little building as a ‘true’ representation of the prototype is a great way to breach that almost preconceived ‘setting’ of our eyes.
    As a kind of ‘pet peeve,’ in more modern architecture, one can observe the opposite happening.
    Either, because regulations for floor heights have become more ‘standardized,’ or because the eyes of the architects are just as preconceived for parallel floor heights as ours.
    As you’ve so rightly stated, older developments have a much more common fluctuation of floor heights, roof lines, frontages, etc.
    Which in turn makes these true types much more interesting to model. Plus, in true life, these differences add to the character of an area or neighborhood. Where their true potential is to keep these buildings, dwellings and utilities much more livable and workable, just as they are!!
    Or, as they are a reflection of our human presence. When one would live there, it isn’t even necessary to say the street number on the address, to explain where people can find the dwelling. It only needs the remark: “oh, my house is on left hand side of the curved hotel, just before the train viaduct.” And everyone who knows Chandwell, if only a little, will know where it is!

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Very wise words. I am pleased I’ve managed to convey all of that in model form.

    One of my sons has a Victorian flat. The difference in ceiling height is dramatic compared to a modern build. Love the odd shape and the fact it reflects the actual building beside the hotel you've just modelled. There seems to be an evaporation problem with one of your bottles! I would look into that if I were you! ;-) Cheers

    Hi Michael, just had a look at this and it’s a great example of how differing styles can work. On the face of it the building would look odd, but even without looking at the real thing you’ve crafted this beautifully and made it fit in to the layout.
    When I’m on the laptop I’ll have a look at the membership - I was looking for the button but couldn’t find it. A quick Google revealed it doesn’t come up in iOS devices which I generally use for YT. I’d love to have such a good resource to help with my scratchbuilding ideas, but I realise it’s a long road 🤔

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. I was a bit skeptical at first but I agree that it’s worked out well in the end. There’s no pressure to become a member, but I know that some people like the weekly “behind the scenes” videos and they allow me to answer questions without the focus on videos that appeal to a wider audience. They’re not for everyone of course.

  • @markavis7232
    @markavis7232 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here in Salford, I think that building new stuff had its last gasp in the mid 70s - and what went up then was pretty nasty. Then things fell down for 30 years; some of it (Victoriana) just fell down, some of it (the pubs) were burned down, and some of it (the more recent stuff) was pulled down. And the really smart money bought-up Chandwell about now ('93), sat on it, and is now building glass tower blocks all over it at eye-watering prices. Somewhere in Chandwell is a small anonymous office where men in suits are slowly buying up land. In a few years they will leverage local discontent at the state of the place, to secure public funding to start a redevelopment that will ensure locals can't afford to live there anymore! My name's Ben Elton, goodnight :-)

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll have to model that anonymous office. Perhaps with a little crappy sign.

    Aye, the stick label method works a right treat to be fair mate, bit of a head scratcher at first as you technically are cutting through the labels too but it all comes together with the strategic removal of the inners.

    I think the dingy "white" finish is spot on for Chandwell, I can think of several businesses that would typically occupy that, car maintainance, motorcycle breakers, 2nd hand shops, both clothes and books, washer and vacuum repairs, actually pretty much anything that doesn't deal in new stuff.

    • @markavis7232
      @markavis7232 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a bike breakers! Then the little triangle at the back can be full of old tyres and the white plastic legshields from a hundred dead C90s :-)

    It looks gloriously grotty, Michael - and the shop windows look amazing also. Have you any plans for street lighting, I wonder? I think you already have lighting inside some of the buildings and the station clock tower, if I remember rightly. Thanks again. Tom

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have lighting in some buildings but I tend not to do it any more simply because I don’t get any enjoyment out of it. Not decided on street lights yet. There will need to be some, obviously, but I am unlikely to light them. It’s always day time in Chandwell! 😂

    • @thomashiggins4923
      @thomashiggins4923 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chandwell Well that's a fair argument, Michael, but Chandwell is very atmospheric. I imagine myself walking down its streets on a winter afternoon, possibly dropping into an off licence for a bottle of Blue Nun, before heading round to a friend's upstairs terrace house (poorly insulated) flat conversion. I need the street lighting for that scenario. And it would have to be inadequate street lighting, so that the walks under the bridges don't feel entirely reassuring, as well...
