  • The 2020 Canyon Grail CF SL 7.0 is the direct-sale giant's cheapest carbon gravel bike and, for this year, it gets a Shimano GRX gravel-specific groupset. Designed around Canyon’s unique double-decker Hover bar, the Grail CF is a capable all-rounder, albeit one with polarising looks.

      Looks cool but the complicated sizing makes it a no go for me. I have a size 54 (M) Trek Checkpoint SL and although that's already one size smaller for my 1,80m than recommended by Trek, I had to further shorten the reach with a new Handlebar which I changed from 85mm reach to 70mm (and a bit wider as well). With that the Bike is far more comfortable and controllable for me. For frontend suspension I use a Redshift suspension stem so I got that covered as well. I think getting a perfect fit for the Grail would have been a massive pain in the butt or just flatout impossible unless I got extremely lucky and I'm not willing to take that chance.

      Like swans, there's a rumour that if you make the hover-bar angry it'll break your arm... ...but there's very little real-world evidence of this.

      I bought the Grail 8.0 SL and received it 3 weeks ago after waiting 3 weeks for delivery. It took about 50 miles to get used to after my Aeroad. It is a lovely bike to ride. I have done a 40 mile ride purely on road and it did get a bit much after 35 miles (I live in England and our winter isn't fun.) It feels lovely on road and feels like a road bike but with more rolling resistance and great off road.
      I have tended to do 40 mile rides with about 15 miles on road. Gravel roads/ fire tracks it is really fast, smooth single track (blue routes) are ok but the 40mm tyres get bogged down easily and rough single tracks are doable but require some slowing down and picking your line very carefully.
      Yes the wheels and tyres are tubeless ready but it doesn't come with tubeless valves (It comes with tubes in), so be prepared to fork out another £15 for tubeless valves if you want a tubeless set up. This is a bit off considering I just paid £2,570 for the bike and delivery, you have to pay £14.99 for the cardboard box and £33 for delivery!
      Overall if you're after a Gravel bike you'll be hard pushed to beat the Grail 8.0 SL it's comes with GRX 810 (ultegra level) and those funky bars and split seat post really add good compliance on the rough stuff.

      Outstanding bike. The warranty is crazy good. The fit and finish, if you do your homework is pretty much right on. These bike would cost quite a bit more if you had to pay for the cost of the brick and mortar display.

    I have the Grail 8cfsl and I used the canyon measurement system. I set it up straight from the box and the only adjustment I needed to make was saddle height. I also removed the inner tubes and went tubeless. This bike is such good fun both on and off road. (something this review did not really get across) The bike is exceedingly nimble and on road it accelerates pretty well. Climbs are a breeze with the gear ratios on offer and especially when you are on the rougher trails.
    People worry about the hover bar but it is brilliant. Your top bar sits at the normal height. Once you understand this it is simple. The flex in the top takes a lot of the sting out of the roads and small potholes are no longer a problem. The 8 comes with the split seat post which again helps make the ride plusher. It is a bike that you will either love or hate but you should really not judge it until you have ridden one.

    Great and honest review, I´ll agree! I´ve just bought the same bike in size M. I´m 176cm /standover hight = 85,3cm. It´s really the limit, because 1) I´ve got less than 2cm of clearence and 2) the optimal fore-aft saddle position. Size M is perfect for longer rides with hands on top of the hover bar. Size S would be too small for me regarding comfort. Have fun!

    I have the AL 6.0 and love it. GRX with hyd brakes. It is bombproof. I usually ride road and wanted something that I wouldn't worry too much if it got scratched and this fits perfectly. Great bike and weighs 9.5kg, so only a little heavier than the carbon with the same wheelset.

    Just got my CF SL8 a few weeks ago. Absolutely love the looks and the ride! The cockpit makes it very unique, a real head-turner. The bikes feels still quite nimble and quick but offers much compliance for a roadie. Very happy I decided to go for it. Was lucky to visit Canyon HQ for a test-ride, so no worries about the size.

I’ve not gotten on either one since my Grail arrived. It’s such a pleasure and utter joy to ride. It’s faster than my strive and more comfortable than my Infinito. I’m very very happy with it. I’m enjoying manual gear changing, haven’t had that since I went AXS on my Strive. I can’t express my satisfaction with this buy. I have a Grail CF SL 8, 2019 Model, 1x Force1 setup, size M (same frame as 2020 and 2021 models). For all looking for sizing/buy advice: in general the review resembles my opinion as well. With one very big emphasis on FRAME SIZE: I think the most critical thing on this bike is to make sure it fits you well. I'm 176cm, 82cm inseam and got size M after test ride at the factory, despite the website suggests S for me. I've asked Canyon about swapping the cockpit with other sizes and they told me, that it's not possible on the Grail (although it's possible on some of their other bikes). Therefore, the info about cockpit exchange is misleading! Even though the bike fits me well, I can't stand the feeling, that one size narrower cockpit would fit me better. The M size has 75-440 cockpit, whereas the S size has 75-420. XS has 60-400. The most annoying thing is that you can't try the other options. Thus, even if you get more insights from a professional bike fit, you can't apply them to the Grail. For all looking to buy, especially without testing: I would be very careful with that bike, if you tend to have short arms or your inseam-to-height ratio (or legs-to-torso) is off the "standard". Do a bike fit for a fraction of the Grail's price, dial in the bike position and decide with the fitter, if that suits you.

    • @almograve
      @almograve 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't get it...you say "even if you get more insights from a professional bike fit, you can't apply them to the Grail" and then you say "Do a bike fit for a fraction of the Grail's price, dial in the bike position and decide with the fitter". And how do you do all this without the bike....?

    • @dannynedyalkov
      @dannynedyalkov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@almograve You can visit a bike fitter who has a fitting jig. Based on Canyons geometry specs the fitter can dial in the bike's geometry and asses, whether it fit's you or not. You don't need the bike for that. And of course, the fitter will asses what geometry will be best for you.

    • @0741921
      @0741921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Review is nice, thanks for sharing... just thoughts... watching this review and how he was riding on the slope it is another confirmation that gravel is not really suitable for the forest ride... it goes back to older time when MTB was just appearing on the market... it was almost the same... and quickly evolved into something more suitable with more suspicion, smaller and wider wheels, another bar, another gearing... in other words “back to the past future”

  • @Piplodocus

    Having just bought a bike and having compared it's geometry to others, I wish everyone gave both stack and reach but also "stack+" and "reach+" as I want to compare where my hands and body will be, (with some consideration of regular stack and reach). Just stack and reach or looking at top-tube length, mean it's nigh on impossible to compare a longer bike with shorter stem to a shorter bike with longer stem without me having to start making the spreadsheets. The buggers always put all the bike geometry in one sizing table, while putting stem lengths per size in the parts table too (cue more scrolling and spreadsheets 😆)!

    I am looking forward to the hover bars. Questions for everyone or anyone. 11/14/2020: I just noticed that Canyon in the US just released a new grail bike: Grail CF SL 8 Di2. Previously I was going to buying the Grail CF SLX 8 Di2, mainly because I wanted the Di2 setup. The Grail CF SL 8 Di2 is $3999 and the Grail CF SLX 8 Di2 is $5299. They are identical bikes except for the frame SLX frame at 8.44 kg and SL frame at 8.88 kg and the wheels for the SLX are Reynolds ATR carbons and the wheels for the SL are DT Swiss G1800 Spline db. The weight is not really a deciding factor for me. But combined with the Reynolds ATR carbons, do you think it is worth the $1300 difference with the frame? From what I can tell a set of Reyonds ATR carbons are about $1300-$1500 retail and a set of DT Swiss G1800 Spline db are $500. Note everyone I am novice when it comes to bike components.

    As mentioned in the video, the hover bar is for helping damp big hits when you're on the tops, which is precisely never. Gimmicky proprietary nonsense I'm afraid. The AL version with a standard bar is kind of tempting though.

      Totally agree. Anywhere technical needs hands ready to use brakes and gears. I only use the tops on smooth uphills of steady gradient, so an elaborate ugly talking point ruins an otherwise nice bike.

      The flexing upper bar is definitely a nice feature, but not really a reason to buy it, because it absorbs vibrations just slightly. The splitted seat post bar (you get it with the 2.600 euro version or you can buy it separatly) is making it probably way more comfortable. But what I really do enjoy with my grail and the hoverbar: hooking in my thumbs! On rougher terrain its really nice, wouldnt wanna go back from that to a normal cockpit.
