the album is "a gentle evening with townes van zandt". On November 26, 1969, Poppy Records held a showcase at New York City's Carnegie Hall. For years, the tape of this show was lost as the little Poppy label was snapped up by larger companies (United Artists and Capitol). Well worth the rediscovery, this concert reveals the 25-year-old Van Zandt singing with a gentle voice -- before it got battered by his hard living.
I am reading the comments left below, and I am wondering; weren't you all not listening? This isn't about racism; it is anti - racism!!! He is poking the "BEAR" !!!
@@normanmcneal3605 I like people who wore masks during the emergency pandemic because they had sympathy for their fellow citizens, even if certain citizens were deplorable.... Nazis wear ski masks when they protest against anything not straight white Christian... the kkk are obviously deplorable and in the same category as right winged bigots and of course wore sheets to cover their identity. The maga terrorists are the new kkk... also, people who want to build a wall to separate themselves from others to keep their small community the same- that's called communism.
Well, I brought along some mighty good herb To the bigots and winos And the sign that says ''Do not disturb'' A man said to me ''What the hell do you think you're doing Trying to sell that sh*t here?'' Before the rest of 'em could scream and shout I said ''Listen, Mr, if you'll just hear me out, This is the best stuff on the market, I know you won't hate, Share it with your friends, I'm sure they'd appreciate'' The man just looked at me and said ''Well.. I suppose all the winos do is drink wine And all the bigots do is well.. Whine Hand me some of that stuff, And I'll see if I can put a smile on their face'' So, I handed him a sample and he took a puff He said, ''Hold on there, son This is pretty good stuff'' He handed it to his friends And they took a toke And all the bigots and winos do now Is laugh and joke Well, he shook my hand And I went on my way With a smile on my face And pretty good pay Because I did something good today I turned around the miserable lives Of the bigots and winos
Old Townes must’ve been accidentally booked at some ‘70s supper club during an NAACP banquet. At least the crickets were laughing and chirping along. Too bad Richard Pryor didn’t show up and sing this little gem; I believe he would’ve brought the damn house down.
next line is they raised the kids to form antifa ,,, and it's all because country joe says the only good commie is one that's dead,, who knew country joe was so smart ,,to bad townes died in a trailer park ..he was a man with lots to say...sad sad day i guess he had a million friends they say and so on and so on,,,,,,,,,
Songwriters write hundreds, if not thousands of songs. Most of them, we do for ourselves; songs we think are written well. There's nothing about the style of prose of this song that makes it different than anything else he ever wrote.

The problem with irony is that not everyone gets it
jokes about communism are only funny if everyone gets it
Especialy Americans
To believe he's serious is to believe he left 2nd grade to join kkk
Could be that liberals are no better than Klan. They all wear masks when protesting. Don’t y’all hate that?

Such a good joke.
@@FrankUnknown And very likely true at Carnegie Hall in 1969.
It is amazing how many people have low comprehension levels and still think they like TZV. You don't even understand him.
i remember having a TVZ album called poet that had several artists covering his songs but i was pretty sure it was made after he passed GRHS
Thanks!

I love Townes with all my heart, but I've kinda gotta agree with old AB here...this is a pretty dumb song.

All songs are dumb and the people who listen to songs are dumber
