If you frequent a particular restaurant because the food is great, the atmosphere is inviting, the staff is courteous and enthusiastic and then one day you return to find the menu changed, the inside remodeled, the old staff replaced with rude, lazy jerks, it's all your fault for not liking the new version!
Yeah I know the feeling because that actually happened to me. And the place quickly went out of business. Because it wasn't only me who stopped going there.

Looking in hindsight, I think Christopher Tolkien was the unsung hero all these years until his end in 2020. He knew how toxic the modern entertainment industry was and how it would poison the Tolkien universe his father created if allowed. That's why he had such an iron grip on the Tolkien estate and was extremely selective on what could be added or adapted which helped maintain the integrity of middle earth much longer that that of other series. Also, middle earth is rich in lore and there are multiple stories outside of the "rings of power." The fact that these production companies are always so set on the "rings of power" just shows that they do not have a full comprehension of the lore and are of a one track mind of fast cash.
It's a shame Christopher's son didn't have the same balls but rather a disrespect for a legacy he had nothing to do with creating and a greedy disposition. Christopher worked closely with his father and Tolkien credited him as co author on the last books. Michael has no sign of that talent or is too lazy to try so has gone out of his way to destroy the legacy.
I mean just take Star Wars, "Skywalker" is the one track mind most of the content has been structured around beyond the original six movies. We didn't need a sequel trilogy in the fashion we got it, (not even talking about the quality or how good/bad it was) just the focus on Skywalker was done with the 6 movies. It was Anakin/Darth Vader's story, it got told and it was done. I do appreciate the shows like Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett trying somewhat to step away from, "Skywalker" but it still creeps in. But there is a wealth of expanded lore and stories to be told in these universes that go untouched and skipped over. Then what they do touch is tainted by gender politics and woke bullshit. Like just leave well enough alone and tell us other stories in these universes please.
I knew it was going to be crap the second I heard they were writing 'new' material instead of adapting the Silmarillion. If the writers were talented enough to write new LOTR, then they'd be off writing their own world wide best sellers and counting their money.
Even if they adapted the Silmarillion, they’d give it the same treatment, would be no more appealing than the fresh turds they’ve pulled out their ass.
@@Bow-to-the-absurd yeah, it’s a long ream of poetic lore and a countless list of names, you could probably find something to make a story out of within it though.
instead of making this shit ring of power series, i wish they make series about those easterlings (harad, umbar, rhun, etc) and the 2 blue wizards (if they want people of color participating a lot in the series) but no.. i guess that wont happen with their intentions
Hell, they don’t even have to give us exactly what we may have wanted. Just tell a compelling story, with a well thought out plot, and interesting characters. It’s really that simple.
"Prince Durin IV" Definitive proof the show runners have only maybe skimmed through the books. Every "Durin" is believed to be a reincarnation of the original. How the hell can there be two reincarnations of Durin alive at once? King Durin III is still kicking at that point.
They literally had to pull a trailer out because the people working on the show didn't actually know about the lotr story. The same thing happened in Amazon games studios: They put a bunch of nobodies to work on multi-hundred million dollar projects. Like New World.
@@guyincognito8440 Legend has it that when three Durins exist simultaneously, they are compelled to seek each other out and battle to the death. Because, in the end, there can be only one.
The showrunners are aware of that problem with the Durins reincarnations and stated that they had arranged it in a way it would make sense. This according to the fans at the london event ;)
Err, ya we got it, evil cannot bla bla bla... You know what, we all hate this Ring of Power, but seriously this comment is getting very annoying. It is literally in every videos about ROP i have watched..
I’ll repeat myself... If it wasn’t written by J.R.R Tolkien, it isn’t Lord of the Rings. Glorified fanfic, at best, a cheap knock-off at worst. I fear it will be the latter.
Obviously it's entirely different than Tolkien's artistic vision for Second Age :) otherwise there would be no hobbits hehe. THIS is what Tolkien's vision for Second Age is supposed to look like: As Tolkien wrote elsewhere about the "older legends" (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien p. 333): "....Nearly all are grim and tragic: a long account of the disasters that destroyed the beauty of the Ancient World, from the darkening of Valinor to the Downfall of Númenor and the flight of Elendil. And there are no hobbits. Nor does Gandalf appear." ... ""The three main themes (of the Second Age) are thus The Delaying Elves that lingered in Middle-earth; Sauron's growth to a new Dark Lord, master and god of Men; and Numenor-Atlantis. They are dealt with annalistically, and in two Tales or Accounts, The Rings of Power and the Downfall of Númenor. Both are the essential background to The Hobbit and its sequel... There is Sauron. In the Silmarillion and Tales of the First Age Sauron was a being of Valinor perverted to the service of the Enemy and becoming his chief captain and servant. He repents in fear when the First Enemy is utterly defeated, but in the end does not do as was commanded, return to the judgement of the gods. He lingers in Middle-earth. Very slowly, beginning with fair motives: the reorganising and rehabilitation of the ruin of Middle-earth, 'neglected by the gods', he becomes a reincarnation of Evil, and a thing lusting for Complete Power - and so consumed ever more fiercely with hate (especially of gods and Elves). Thus, as the Second Age draws on, we have a great Kingdom and evil theocracy (for Sauron is also the god of his slaves) growing up in Middle-earth. In the West lie the precarious refuges of the Elves, while Men in those parts remain more or less uncorrupted if ignorant... Meanwhile Númenor has grown in wealth, wisdom, and glory, under its line of great kings of long life, directly descended from Elros, Earendil's son, brother of Elrond... In the first stage, being men of peace, their courage is devoted to sea-voyages....Mostly they come to the west-shores of Middle-earth, where they aid the Elves and Men against Sauron, and incur his undying hatred. In those days they would come amongst Wild Men as almost divine benefactors, bringing gifts and knowledge, and passing away again - leaving many legends behind of kings and gods out of the sunset. In the second stage, the days of Pride and Glory and grudging of the Ban, they begin to seek wealth rather than bliss. The desire to escape death produced a cult of the dead, and they lavished wealth on tombs and memorials. They now made settlements on the west-shores, but these became rather strongholds and 'factories' of lords seeking wealth, and the Númenóreans became tax-gatherers carrying off over the sea evermore and more goods in their great ships. The Númenóreans began the forging of arms and engines... A new religion, and worship of the Dark, with its temple under Sauron arises. The Faithful are persecuted and sacrificed. The Númenóreans carry their evil also to Middle-earth and there become cruel and wicked lords of necromancy, slaying and tormenting men; and the old legends are overlaid with dark tales of horror. This does not happen, however, in the North West; for thither, because of the Elves, only the Faithful who remain Elf-friends will come... The Second Age ends with the Last Alliance (of Elves and Men), and the great siege of Mordor. It ends with the overthrow of Sauron and destruction of the second visible incarnation of evil" The Second Age is no longer a continued narrative, but more like succession of events, a great saga of politics and wars and great struggle for power, it's no longer a simple quest or adventue story with little guys or 'everyman' characters NO it is a story focused on the great ones, the mighty, the elf-lords, kings, nobles, great families and rulers who shape the worldly affairs, the larger than life heroic character of mythical feel! Like straight from mythology, it has dark themes and tragedy, is not very optimistic considering it ends in untold disasters happening! The fate of simple folk and common people is noted and often is harsh due to collateral damage but focusing on those is besides the point, so that whole invented subplot of village healer Bronwyn her son Theo and what's his face dark skinned latino elf Arondir is completely missing the point too :) (I'd say there was NO need for any 'romance' least forbidden love, but if they really wanted to they could have explored the actual marriage of elf couple of mighty lords meaning Celeborn and Galadriel's family life, their marriage, love nad daughter Celebrian, all missing from this show :)) or have the story of Amroth and Nimrodel, which while described in Unfinsihed Tales to which they have no rights, there is also the song sang by Legolas in Fellowship book so they could have that for fulfilling the romance quota :). In any case we will see A LOT crappy fanfic material original inventiosn of the script writers and showrunners which is painfully obvious without access to the parts of The Silmarillion and UT! A shame too, the Unfinished Tales actually have a PROPER narrative set in in SECOND AGE, the tale Aldarion and Erendis: Mariner's Wife!
@@fantasywind3923 It’s an absolutely amazing canvass with which to work. We've got black dwarves, elves, men, and hobbits. But ZERO black orcs, even if they are actually described to be black skinned in the novels. I smell racism.
At least, being in the darkness, it kinda makes sense that they're white. But the black darf Queen is certainly out of place. Someone who's living in caves don't need that much melanin. Also, the rascism of these people is showing when they says that can't relate to the characters because they don't look like them. Being whatever race shouldn't be relevant on how you can relate to a character. Being white or black or asian is not a characters trait if it's not relevant to the plot. In the Peter Jackson movies and the books, I could relate to Gimli because he's short tempered and snarky, despite being as diffent physically as him as it can be. I'm 6.4ft, blond and *very* thin (too much for my taste in fact) . If they can't relate to anyone because of how they look like, I kinda pity them and hope they will grow out this mindset. We, the people who love the Tolkien's world, just want it as it's supposed to be and certainly not "updated" for modern audience. There's no such thing as a modern audience. And they could have had all the diversity they wanted if they have shown the southern people and the haradrims, they're based on the people of Nord-Africa or ancien Persia. It wouldn't have been much of a stretch to have some black people, and the haradrims themselves being Arabic. But no. Let's put token black people, 1 for each faction. Except the Orcs because people might think we're rascist. This is stupid. Sorry for the very long answer and english isn't my language. I did my best to be clear.
These people are so narcissistic. It isn’t about creating a diverse fantasy universe. Tolkien already gave us that. It’s about trying to make established characters and races appear like themselves to fulfill some level of self gratification.
Correct it’s like a power play. I’d like to ask someone that thinks like that ‘why can’t you enjoy something that doesn’t have all people like you in it?’ Or ‘I’m white, am I supposed to not like black panther?’
If there was a deep dive mythology driven narrative centered in an Africa type place with African type people, I'd watch as long as it was good. Why don't they do something like that instead of making race an issue in a classic? Oh, you said it in your first sentence. Yeah, that, insecurity and egos out of control.
@@josefk332 There is not much past to see. African-type race already exists in LotR universe they just decided to not use it and blackwash other ones BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE LOTR. There's a great LOTR series. It's called "The Lord of the Rings". Came out in the 2000s. it's showrunners were way better, and not incompetent hacks trying to make the works of the most celebrated fantasy author in human history, for some strange idiotic reason: "Their own".
Ive just written a novel. Not published yet & don't know if it ever will be, but if it is I know I'd despair if it was butchered like this. If it was altered to this extent it wouldn't be the story I wrote.
People always complain about shows like this, but then most of the time they go and watch the show anyway! The only way to punish production companies who sully the legacy of great stories is to *not watch their content.*
Or if they have to watch it, then bloody hell go an pirate it, why pay money for turd so they think there's a demand that you want more turd? Note: Does not work for CW series tho, they have like a blank check to make stupid there
I love the character of Galadriel from the books. Her part is small but her impact is mighty. She's beautiful, wise & compassionate, but at the same time she's powerful & quite frankly terrifying. Cate Blanchett captured her perfectly. I don't who this character is supposed but it's not Galadriel. Turning her into some kind of warrior women actually weakens her not makes her stronger.
Tolkien was aware of the reality of living in a harsh, war torn world and how that necessitated keeping them women safe and away from battle in order to keep your race alive. Galadriel was a princess of the Eldar, she married a king of the Sindar, and established a kingdom of their own and one of the few that survived into the age of the Hobbit and LoTR. Tolkien tells of her traveling between the kingdoms of her brothers and the other princes but never places her in battle. Oh, she also hangs out with Thingol and Melian which is where she meets and falls in love with Celegorn.
Both the books and, incredibly, the movies make her so beautiful, powerful, and terrifying without her fighting in battle and wearing armor. It's the power of good vs bad writing. We don't need to see her full power to know we don't want to get on her bad side. Now these weak writers are trying to show her strength by making her physically strong--but that's never been the source of our perception of her power. It's like they haven't seen even just the movies, much less read the 3 main books.
It’s impossible to see these companies as profit-seeking ventures anymore. They are seeking social credit for having enough political points in their shows to show off to their Hollywood counterparts. True courage would be taking the source material and directly adapting it. The Wheel of Time was a travesty compared to the novels.
Ita gonna make money, sheep like you are always gonna talk about it and it will gain traction and will allow people to find about it through you sheep. I wish the success of this show.
When I was in seventh grade I read a book called “a wrinkle in time”. Apparently they made a shitty movie based on the book that I loved as a kid. Fuck these people.
Wheel of Time was shit, but not because of forced diversity. Those books were already an SJW's dream. They were already "diverse" and had women as the ones were in power. It was shit because of bad writing.
People are not hating something they once loved. They are hating something new that has been conflated with something they love by calling it the same name.
It's the skin suit, lotus eaters has a great segment on it. "Don't you love me? I'm your same beloved ip, really! I look just like them." As the skin suit hangs loosely.
"Relatable" is such a b.s. pretext for ruining things. Tolkien's work was very relatable - thanks to universally relevant themes. I never needed Gandalf or Sherlock Holmes or Indiana Jones to look like me for me to admire them.
Excellent video editing and commentary - and of course they waited for Christopher Tolkien to pass to do this: "The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away."
It’s easier to blame those who truely appreaciate the source materials than to admit the failiure of the creators. They want the money and fame but refuse the responsibility
This series is the discord of Melkor brought to life: "it was loud, and vain, and endlessly repeated; and it had little harmony, but rather a clamorous unison as of many trumpets braying upon a few notes. And it essayed to drown out the other music by the violence of its voice"
@@kelaarin 1812 overture, specifically the bit right before the cannons? Only strong piece of trumpet I can think of that sounds like it's trying to drown out the rest of the orchestra. Maybe it was Tolkien putting forth an opinion about jazz, and Melkor just decided to throw in a trumpet solo in the wrong time signature in the middle of an orchestral piece?
‘And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in devising things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.’ In light of this truth, I’m sure Amazon’s discord will inspire real fans to create a dedication to Tolkien worthy of the name.
We live in a time where most really good movie universes: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Ring..... are butchered by woke cultists. As a fan i encourage you to buy the originals on DVD or Blueray. It wont take a long time until these people try to censor or destroy all original source material.
It is amazing how critics and writers bear zero responsibility for any of this. I remember article after article trashing the Game of Thrones writers, written in the most toxic way possible. But none of that matters it’s all the fans fault it’s all the fault of people that didn’t write those articles encouraging stockpiling. It’s like this all the time, the “professionals “get to act as toxic as they want and blame and blowback on the fans. It is exploitative abs abusive and not the way creatives used to work.
Many talentless writers and producers are using 'Wokeness' to climb to important positions, disregarding meritocracy, to have their dreams come true. It's a communist thing. Saw it in Cuba a lot. Ideology often comes before actually being good at your job.
I miss when the media and the corporations and fandom were completely separate and they acted like fandom didn't even exist and we were safe away from them on our forums and Livejournals. Those were the good days.
@@ffs6158 that's exactly what it is. I dont understand how making the cast more diverse makes it reach more diverse audiences. As an Asian person, I’ve never said “let’s watch that movie because the main character is played by an Asian actor”. Nor have I ever thought that I would be convinced to watch a movie I didn’t want to if there was an Asian actor. I just want to see good and compelling storytelling and be entertained for the $15 and 2 hours I spend watching the movie or the 10+ hours watching a series, not being subconsciously messaged on political messages.
"Galadriel has a lot to learn." Really? She had spent countless years in Valinor with the Valar and Maiar. Been part of the Noldor community in Valinor at the height of their power and creativity. Witnessed the events of the the kinslaying of the Teleri, crossed the grinding ice flows into Beleriand and later lived with and learned from Melian the Maia at the court of Thingol in Doriath when Morgoth was at the height of his power in Middle Earth and made war against the elven kingdoms. Galadriel would have been witness to the overthrow of Thangorodrim and the destruction of Beleriand by the conflict between the armies of Valinor and Morgoth which resulted in the fall of Morgoth. This actress playing Galadriel is stunning in her complete ignorance of the background of the character of Galadriel, she is looking at Galadriel from a human and mortal perspective of life experience being gained in a short life span rather than a being who has existed for thousands of years. What does this actress imagine Galadriel was doing with her time over the long centuries? Weaving tapestries perhaps or needle point? The show runners are clueless and don't have the wit or imagination to develop these strands of the history of the world that Tolkien created.
My explanation for Celeborn's disappearance: He's a BAD husband and Galadriel kicked him out of their home. A loving couple, a well-established marriage? Get the heck out of here! That's fantasy in and of itself! Amazon: "We can't portray a supporting marriage! It sends the wrong message!"
Can't wait for that to become true and then for the diversity reveal of how Galadriel is now a lesbian. Probably with the black dwarf queen. But the haughty white woman is the bottom. We live in the stupidest timeline.

If you want to “tell new stories”, then write NEW stories. These people are children finger painting on the Mona Lisa. You can’t simultaneously hate Tolkien’s worldview and add to his cannon. These writers can’t succeed because they don’t understand what a hero is. Heroes don’t live their best lives, they lay down their lives for others. That was the emotional resonance of LOTR, Frodo never got to go home. He broke himself to better the world. Narcissists can’t grasp the concept, so inevitably they create a skin suit.
THANK YOU! You see this in every property these fuckers infest. It's particularly egregious in the comic book industry, since they'll justify a "hero" murdering a dude who works at a supermarket because a sea turtle choked on a plastic bag that happened to be from one of said markets. FFS, they tried to strawman Jordan Peterson by having Red Skull practically quote the guy, and all it did was make the villain sound more reasonable than any of the heroes!
There is a better chance of getting someone to watch an established IP with some new life injected into it than cultivating a new crowd from scratch. But I have a feeling you knew that already.
I'm a big Tolkein fan. From the day my dad took me to go see the Fellowship of The Ring, I was a fan after leaving that theater. That year my dad bought to be the Hobbit to read. I wasn't a big reader then, but I blasted through that book. Then I took on the Lord of The Ring Trilogy and read all three. Went to every movie opening. When the Hobbit finally came out, I was right there for all three. Then I heard a series was coming out, I got excited when I heard the news. Then I heard Amazon was the one who had purchased it and was making the series. My heart stopped after that. I know they've found some way to have crapped all over it.
I've heard excuses along the lines of "This is a younger Galadriel than she was in the movies, less composed and more impulsive". What crap. She was born before the SUN. Her age difference between this time frame and LOTR is like a human aging from 43 to 44 years old. Not a huge change
Exactly, not to mention after witnessing the killing of the kindred, crossing the Helcaraxë, watching the most beautiful ships burn from afar and then in subsequent years seeing half her relatives going insane or dying gruesomely, plus receiving mentoring from a freaking Maia, you would think she was not going to act like a 20 years old brat.
Not to mention that she has already at this stage spent literally hundreds of years chilling with basically a Demi god… but much like Celeborn, I fear her time in Doriath with Melian will be largely ignored in favour of “the message”
idiot 😆 some things in books don’t translate to the big screen aswell, you need to show development, if she is in white robes walking around slowly 2000 years earlier it’s boring for the audience and she’d have probably committed suicide, you need to show an age variation, use your brain mate, there a reason new Spider-Man films didn’t show the uncle Ben origina again, the audience get bored, this show isn’t just aimed at racist nerds it’s aimed at casual audiences people want to see a different version and the armour looks cool

Or ones that happen because of spousal abuse? Or even messy breakups of dating couples or even friendships? People fall out of love with people all the time. Why does he think changing entertainment is somehow immune to this? We love what those stories once were, but not what they've become.
6:32 - How can a "scholar" of someone's work miss the point so utterly and completely? These stories stand the test of time because the themes work in any era of history...past, present, or future. Changing them to, again, "face the challenges of today" can only lessen the work. They already provide answers to today's challenges. If you want to provide your own answers, that's completely fine. Just come up with your own world and characters and story. Don't take something that is already an A+ product and use that to springboard your own message. Be creative and come up with something original!!!
Because they already know they're talentless hacks who can't come up with a good story to preach their message. Also, Tolkien's masterwork is in the way of their message. To the woke, destroying earlier good works kills two birds with one stone.
I'm cool with original too, not taking something that a dead man has written several centuries ago, who can't defend his own work now, is something I frown on. It's neither creative nor "progressive", it's plagiarism.

I really wanted to see Galadriel in Doriath before its fall, where she meets Celeborn and they fall in love. There she learns magic from Melian and she gets interrogated by her and Thingol about the sins of the Noldor and what they've done. There is sooo much in Tolkien's legendarium about her life in Middle-Earth after she crosses the Ice because Feanor betrays her kin. Why would they not focus on this story?? It's absolutely wonderful
First off, because they don't have the rights to that story (the Silmarillion). Yes, they have the Appendices, and could fabricate something from this thin outline, but that would require too much work. There IS more than enough in the Appendices to construct a good take on the Second Age, but the Show Runners won't do that because they wanted time compression, and they wanted to present an equitable, woke version of JRRT. They want nothing (including Celeborn) to distract from their message of powerful women, spineless white Jello males, and significant additions of POC.
It always makes me laugh when people try and change something with a large, built in fan base but fail to even acknowledge said base. Then try and blame and alienate the same fan base by insulting them and claiming they are toxic.
When trash get upset at black people being in an ADAPTATION of a fantasy. Then yeah One has to think why are these vile trash so upset. Toxic is a fairly innocuous for inbreeding trash, if you ask me

I never understood the need to “reimagine” a story that was just fine as it was AND had a huge following. Either keep it original because, guess what, you’ll probably have the most success that way because all those fans want to see an accurate presentation of what they love. Or, make something new from your own imagination. If you do it well enough, you will create a fan following! Wow! No, they just want to slap “LotR” on it because the fans are already there and I guess it’s just easier to try and trick them into liking it. Well surprise, fans don’t want made up crap, nor do they want the story to be so perverted with some agenda that it is unrecognizable. Why is that so hard to understand? Just tell the damn story.
Totally agree. Or if you want to deviate from the lore just put some effort into making up an original story and then you can do whatever you want with the characters and lore.
if they were to do so... then how about taking along at King Theoden when he was younger, and end it at the moment of 'just before gandalf and co. enters'? you'd get some cool 'other pov'.
We still love the LOTR we always loved Mr. Martin. What we don’t love, and never loved, is Amazon’s attempted identity politics driven perversion of it. But the Dark Power never could create anything new. All it can do is mock.
The sheer f******g entitlement that they think once they have fans hooked then the fans should just shut up and consume it forever, no questions asked, quality be damned.. To assume this means they take us, the fans, for granted! I hope more fans start waking up to this.
They dont give a shit, Amazon are just doing what Disney are doing. The shift to subscription based entertainment consumption means they need to keep pumping out content to keep people subscribed. It's not about quality anymore its all about quantity. Keep the content flowing, keeps the cash flowing. Quality be damned.
"It used to be if you liked Star Trek, you liked Star Trek. Now it seems like half the people who call themselves Star Trek fans hate Star Trek, and the Star Wars fans hate Star Wars, and the Tolkien fans hate Rings of Power. What the hell?" Let me answer this very simply. If you were around in the 1980's, you may remember Coka-Cola or Coke. Then in the 80's, they changed the flavor and called it New Coke. People generally hated it. Not universally, there were fans of New Coke, but people who were fans of Coke generally didn't buy New Coke. Coke didn't run around calling everyone who hated New Coke toxic. Instead, they re-introduced Coke as Coke Classic. When you change something, you run the risk of irritating those who enjoyed the original. Coke learned from the mistake. Hollywood refuses to learn that lesson.
I agree with everything, and would also like to add that I have an even simpler answer: we didn't stop loving the original stories, we hate to see their legacy being destroyed.
This is actually a phenomenal example. Coke changed it’s formula and people didn’t like it so they got rid of it. New Coke no longer exists because we didn’t want it. Kind of like how cocaine in coke no longer exists.
It's all about ego. Although we do know who invented Coca-Cola 100+ years ago, nowadays only "nameless" people work in the R&D labs of the company, and who would even remember the CEO of the Coca-Cola Company? However, the folks making movie or TV/streaming adaptations of famous works need to fight against their own ego, and too often they lose. If they make an adaptation as faithful as possible (keeping in mind the medium differences), they will be remembered for sticking to the source. In an egotistic person's (which Hollywood is overflowing with) point of view that's nothing, almost an insult. They want to be remembered for creating a work of their own, even if it's supposed to be an adaptation. Since they are egotistic, they obviously believe they can make the work far better than the original author did. In interviews these people often talk sanctimonious rubbish about adapting the work to the 21st century, and whatever, but it's all about their ego, nothing else. It makes them blind to the reality. When it's not received well, they obviously can't accept the criticism because any critical word will be an attack towards their very delicate psyche.
Hollywood DID learn that lesson in the 70s. It's why big budget musicals with big ensemble casts aren't a thing anymore. The crash of the big hollywood musicals almost destroyed several studios, 20th century fox and Disney amoung them. Amazon isn't Hollywood. Which is why i find this ordeal hilarious. They thought they could outsmart the experience of true movie producers by just throwing money at any given problem. They are making the same mistakes Hollywood made in the 70s with big musicals and roadshow releases, and it's glorious to behold.
"I don't understand how people can come to hate something they once loved" Hate and love are 2 sides of the same coin. This is literally just GRRM coping and seething.
To add to your point it's also completely normal and rational for someone to love something for what it was and hate it for what it's become. That applies to all sorts of things and not just entertainment. Movies, shows, books, food products, people, countries. For example I used to love Kraft Dinner and hate the new Kraft Macaroni and Cheese after they changed it. It's possible to do both with something.
Hot take: having standards and expectations as a fan not being met isn’t toxic. Studios expecting fans to like everything they create regardless of its quality is toxic.
yes. being annoyed for not finishing a story we love that was to finish 10 gears ago isn't toxic. deliberately not finishing the story to milk the fans for some extra novellas and fiction history and not working on the main series IS toxic
It certainly doesn't help that they use language like "people of colour taking up space" in the fantasy genre. Kind of implies they don't actually serve a purpose beyond being there.
When a no/low budget fan film like Born of Hope or The Hunt for Gollum does a better job of portraying Tolkien's vision than a multi-billion dollar corporation, you know there are issues.
hell...even the animated one, as flawed, liberties-taking, and incomplete as it came, at LEAT came out of a place of love. how low have standards dropped huh?
I wish we had more directors like Denis Villeneuve and Production Studios like legendary that lets you adapt things like Dune but in a way that's still true to the original writing and the fans respect can't wait for part 2 of Dune it's the only thing I really have any hopes for anymore and that's only because Dennis is doing it
I just love the phrase "perceived deviation". It's almost like they think we actually don't know enough about the thing we know so much about in order to tell them that they don't seem to know anything about it.
Tolkien specifically stated that his books were meant to be a mythology for the English and Celtic people. There shouldn't be any non white ethnic European characters at all. This has nothing to do with "diversity'. Its historical accuracy
I'm Nigerian and I couldn't agree more. Context seems to have been completely discarded in place of agenda in modern entertainment/storytelling. It's headshakingly frustrating. If they want to represent different cultures, they should either use stories from those cultures or make up their own. But they only see legitimacy in eurocentric stories and characters, and they're creatively-vacuous, so it's just easier for them to steal and warp what actual creatives made.

@@mindphlux1899 Oh, I won’t. I’m just clarifying a definitive fact. The books are the only parts of Tolkien’s work that is canon. Nothing else (Personally excluding the Peter Jackson trilogy.)
Remember this: Amazon is spending a ton of money on this atrocity and will be hitting HARD with this next trailer due to the backlash. They'll likely try to cherry pick the best footage possible and make the fans think they're getting exactly what we want. We need to resist and push back. We know what this is no matter how much they might dress it up. I already see people giving in to that crappy picture of a tower in a place Tolkien never wrote about with a character he never invented. Stay strong.
Why push back when there is a good trailer coming out that you actually would like? Why hate against it, when you haven't even seen the show yet? And I don't quite understand why the picture with the tower would be crappy, except of that it doesn't seem to fit your assumptions regarding the show. I think they spend a lot of money and want the series to be a success. The success comes with people watching and following the show, not watching a trailer
@@sampedro9316 Im not sure what you mean with haven't changed a thing. I have just seen one trailer so far. But ofc I can agree that the marketing campaign of amazon for this show is rather bad
@@teltow2 The reason people push back and don't like show, the trailer or the tower is not because any of those things are necessarily terrible . It's because it's not the LOTR , it's another show pretending to be it ,we want an adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien not another show with his name slapped on it. Its the same feelings Percy Jackson fans had because of the movies. Those movies are not necessarily terrible they were just not Percy Jackson, they were something else with its name slapped on it.
@@teltow2 My qualm is just that this ISN'T Tolkien. Art nowadays is reduced to what we have in our current vernacular: "content" almost inevitably part of "franchises" etc. Tolkien's body of work is already laid in stone. Whatever this thing is that Amazon is doing exists (of course) outside of it. While it won't take away or change what he did I'll copy and paste my comment and another users comments in these regards to expound on this: "....I disagree with their approach to creating volumes of their own original material and putting it forward with money, platform, and involvement with specific Tolkien entities, and putting it forward in a way that makes the cultural consciousness accept this as part of Tolkien's body of works. Creating their own story in the large gaps between the connect-the-dots and all because a studio wanted to acquire a name that would make them the big bucks. That's why this all started. Amazon reached out to people for that and no matter how passionate anyone on this project is, that's how it started, and it goes forward with a huge company with lots of shareholders and stakeholders and producers and corporate executives to enforce that. And to anyone who might counter-argue that The Lord of the Rings was born from a similar request by Tolkien's publisher, a comparison of both situations will immediately expose the VERY wide gap that exists between those two situations. [This show] is going to be far easier to digest for the general public than taking the time to go through The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales so I just hope whatever happens it doesn't subplant the general cultural consciousness of the source material." From Anthony: "How much can you change Tolkien's work before it becomes something else? They may have created a wonderfully produced story. However, the rewrites and additions have made it something other than Tolkien. They should own that and give it another name. I consider it expensive fan fiction." So those are some comments I've made on another video and here's a summation of all of that: I think some people are confused as to how someone can respond so adversely with only "a teaser trailer" etc. But the thing here is that the main problem isn't that "this could be good" (and what do you mean by that? That the story as an entity unto itself might be internally consistent and execute the theoretical and technical aspects of story telling well?) Some (arguably most) people respond so adversely because they disagree with the fundamental philosophy and approach of this show. This ISN'T Tolkien's original material. Tolkien's world is Tolkien's world; written and done already, and can't be franchised in the same way Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter (franchised into "The Wizarding World"), and even Star Trek, etc. have been. Who is Disa, Halbrand, Arondir, Bronwyn, Theo, Eleanor Brandyfoot, Adar, and more? Off the top of my head that's 7 original characters that are completely made up doing things that were never written. And then, whether you agree with it or not, existing characters get divisive interpretations. And other elements get divisive decisions. This is not Tolkien. With what we know already we know it's a far cry from Tolkien.
"So much hate in Hollywood. Why would you love profit for so long, and then do everything possible to avoid it. If you don't like an author's work, don't spend billions to spit on it." The most 'toxic people' in fandoms are the ones writing, producing and those defending current shows. These people dont understand what entertainment or more importantly what fantasy or escapism is!
Escapism nowadays is when you insert as much of the modern reality and political agendas into fantasy media as possible. Kinda defeats the purpose, but it's not like those people use common sense anyway, because somehow it's a hate crime.
Permit me to quote Mahatma Gandhi: You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind. Removing fantasy is removing the ability to escape or even the hope of escape, and it's a feature (ironically) of many dystopian novels.
Probably one of the stupidest things I've heard so far is the Wizard falling from the sky bit. In the third age the Istari arrived by ship, at the havens. And being as old as creation and very wise THEY KNEW HOW TO SPEAK!
Exactly- they came to middle earth ready to rock and roll with their individual missions. Amazon is so desperate to have a “hobbit/wizard” dynamic for the normies that they are willing to twistthe lore to suit their agendas.
Amazon's Wheel of Time fiasco has me running for cover from all adaptations. I genuinely believe we can use it as a template for the incoming disaster that will be the Rings of Power. It is hard to tell whether the writers misunderstood the most basic concepts from the books, or if they genuinely don't care and want to write their own story with a separate agenda. Using the name of a famous IP to 'sell' a different product is false advertising; it is disgusting, and we need to stop watching this crap.

The sentence with POC charcters „taking up space“ made me smile… it is what these characters mostly do in moderm tv and film. They are there for diversity, but often so badly written, that they are unlikeable or you just don‘t care.
I just dont understand. When I first saw Galadriel in Fellowship I was blown away by her. I got the impression that she was one of the most powerful being in Middle Earth. This new Galadriel is an actual joke compared to her.
Well of course you don't. Because you were confused and imagined that the point is to liberate women from being held back. Nope. The point is to liberate women from being women. Little girls need to understand that femininity is bad and that they need to become masculine, or else they're pathetic. Of course, this message is only for the girls. The boys in turn need to understand that being masculine is bad and that they need to become feminine, or else they're pathetic.
The Left doesn't recognize that Feminine Power has existed for literally thousands of years. For them, it's all a power struggle, and masculine power must now be usurped.
I know that this trend of pandering and "diversity" has been going on for a while now and I know that people are losing interest with series like this, some even flat out canceling their subscriptions. I am a firm believer of voting with your dollar. So my question is when are going to get the content we want? when are shows and movies going to shift their focus from pandering and fulfill the desire of the fanbase and stay true to source material? I understand that pandering to a larger audience in theory would bring more money, but I've noticed that it doesn't add much numbers to the already existing fan base and in most cases destroys the fan base.
We are only just now seeing a significant number of people willing to vote with their wallet. Amazon is particularly insulated because it lumps the free shipping in with Prime Video, and people aren’t willing to wait a few extra days or a pay a little more to make an actual impact. As long as Prime and these other companies are making money, they will not stop. The sad fact is that few people are willing to do without things they can easily do without in order to affect change. Until that weakness is destroyed, nothing will change.
You still think this is about money? It’s straight up Marxist social engineering propaganda, and the point of it is to force it upon the population who will gradually accept it, little by little (even those who can see how ridiculous it is - see “Stockholm syndrome”). We are very far down this path and 99.9% of people are too naive to realise what’s being done. Essentially most have it backwards - this tripe is not created to make corporations money; corporate profits are used to create it.
Check out Seal Team. Just a random one that popped into my head that I watched recently (one of the few good military shows, one of fewer that's pretty accurate, and fewer still that has several seasons and hasn't been cancelled yet) that not only didn't beat me about the bollocks with The Message, but actually had some fairly centrist/right-leaning messaging at times and was just straight up enjoyable, fun, and well-made
They don't care about money really, they just print that out of thin air. Their true aim is to push their politics thru our entertainment. Why? Social engineering.
Great intro parody clip! Loved it! I used to be critical of some aspects of the Peter Jackson trilogy. How foolish of me. Just becasue Shakespeare is dead it doenst mean we have to rewrite his works and to "step up". There are always adaptions, covers, remakes and whatsoever but nonetheless no one dares to write stories calling them "Shakespeare: reloaded" or "part two" because it would simply be an insult to the author and his works
There was a forgotten movie from the 1980's called "Sweet Liberty". It was about an author of a history book, who's book was purchased by a movie studio, which turned the story into a teen sex romp. Alan Alda played the author, who was aghast at what was going on. I'd imagine Tolkien would be similarly aghast were he alive today. I think of that movie more and more given what's going on in pop culture today.
I remember seeing that movie on VHS. My family had it in our VHS collection during the 1980s. It was a great movie. At least Alan Alda was able to get back at the movie producer in the end.
A similar thing happened to the Author of Earthsea when her book was to be made into a mini-TV-Show, she was very adamant of certain things... like how the characters in the book were at minimum heavily-sunkissed of skin, if not actually middle-eastern looking or full on dark skinned. It was promised she'd be consulted with for various things... But what happened? yes, the retardo adaptation morons decided to whitewash the whole damn cast, compress the story beyond reason, push a romance plot that really shouldn't be there for at least a whole other season or two's worth of episodes, etc. It was utter butchering of the author's creation and since then she's (iirc) said no to ANY further attempts at adapting her work into other media.
Ah, yes! Galadriel hasn't "seen everything yet" in the first 14,000 years of her life. But the next 4000, when the elves essentially hide themselves away from the world, teaches her a lot.
The Two Trees and living in the land of the Valar, the flight of the Noldor, Kinslaying, and the building of the Elven kingdoms in Beleriand, living in Doriath and learning from Melian, the downfall of Beleriand, co-ruling South Lindon, yeah, nothing to see and learn in all that time. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the Land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a Master Flop. And in to this show he poured his money, his greed and his will to dominate every film. ONE SHOW TO RUIN THEM ALL. ⚔️
"You want to tell new stories, not tell the same stories over and over again" It's not about telling the same story, after all that's exactly what Disney did with Force Awakens. It's about telling stories that respect the stories already told, and don't try to ruin/destroy/deconstruct/subvert them.
"New" is not the problem. "GOOD" is the issue. Spiderman was good, dr strange was not. Not sure but, I have to believe Sony kept disney from ruining spiderman. (Just a guess)
But they do tell the same story over and over, the same strong woman who is a man, poorly adapted characters of random races just for the sake of "inclusion or diversity" literal diversity hires. That pushes the same modern political and social topics into things that have nothing to do with the material. It's massive projection, they take a good story, and turn it into their same story they've told over, and over.... and over again... If they really wanted to write something new... they could, they could make their own characters, and their own setting to tell their own stupid story infested with the trappings of modern social justice issues, but they won't, because they know it will suck and no one will watch it, not even cause it's impossible, but because THEY ARE BAD WRITTERS! So they have to hijack a series with a built in fan base to push their stupid bullshit, again...
Except the entire point of an adaptation is literally to tell the same story again in a different medium. Why don't the idiots producing these things understand that?
If you frequent a particular restaurant because the food is great, the atmosphere is inviting, the staff is courteous and enthusiastic and then one day you return to find the menu changed, the inside remodeled, the old staff replaced with rude, lazy jerks, it's all your fault for not liking the new version!
Yeah I know the feeling because that actually happened to me. And the place quickly went out of business. Because it wasn't only me who stopped going there.
Yep, and the fake news media will write articles about how mistreated the new restaurant is because a bunch of bigots won't go there anymore, lol.

Yep, there little tiny minds would explode trying to devour the Silmarillion.
And his corpse wasn’t even room temperature yet when the ideological necrophilia started.
Christopher Tolkien hated Peter Jackson's adaptation. He called it an abomination. If only he could see what has become with modern media.
I knew it was going to be crap the second I heard they were writing 'new' material instead of adapting the Silmarillion.

The showdown of mordor games are pretty good with tons of lore straight from the simiralian
Obviously it's entirely different than Tolkien's artistic vision for Second Age :) otherwise there would be no hobbits hehe. THIS is what Tolkien's vision for Second Age is supposed to look like:
As Tolkien wrote elsewhere about the "older legends" (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien p. 333):
"....Nearly all are grim and tragic: a long account of the disasters that destroyed the beauty of the Ancient World, from the darkening of Valinor to the Downfall of Númenor and the flight of Elendil. And there are no hobbits. Nor does Gandalf appear."
...
It ends with the overthrow of Sauron and destruction of the second visible incarnation of evil"
The Second Age is no longer a continued narrative, but more like succession of events, a great saga of politics and wars and great struggle for power, it's no longer a simple quest or adventue story with little guys or 'everyman' characters NO it is a story focused on the great ones, the mighty, the elf-lords, kings, nobles, great families and rulers who shape the worldly affairs, the larger than life heroic character of mythical feel!

Oh no, the Orcs happen to be very obviously white. Hmm I think there's an inside message there.

Turning her into some kind of warrior women actually weakens her not makes her stronger.
..."she's powerful & quite frankly terrifying," yup.
Yeah, it's a dumbing down, a downgrade.
How is she terrifying?
It’s impossible to see these companies as profit-seeking ventures anymore.
Urgh. Who the fuck cares 🙄
Not to mention that she has already at this stage spent literally hundreds of years chilling with basically a Demi god… but much like Celeborn, I fear her time in Doriath with Melian will be largely ignored in favour of “the message”

Yes!!
Because they don’t care about the source material they just write whatever they want and cram it full of diversity and gay chicks and lameness
It always makes me laugh when people try and change something with a large, built in fan base but fail to even acknowledge said base. Then try and blame and alienate the same fan base by insulting them and claiming they are toxic.

"It used to be if you liked Star Trek, you liked Star Trek. Now it seems like half the people who call themselves Star Trek fans hate Star Trek, and the Star Wars fans hate Star Wars, and the Tolkien fans hate Rings of Power. What the hell?"
Let me answer this very simply.
Well put.
"I don't understand how people can come to hate something they once loved"
Hate and love are 2 sides of the same coin. This is literally just GRRM coping and seething.
When one cannot cope, he must seethe, and when seething no longer works, he can only dilate.
He did explain the other side
More like coping or senile, because it's not hard to understand.
Exactly, the strong hate is because they once loved it.

While it won't take away or change what he did I'll copy and paste my comment and another users comments in these regards to expound on this:
"....I disagree with their approach to creating volumes of their own original material and putting it forward with money, platform, and involvement with specific Tolkien entities, and putting it forward in a way that makes the cultural consciousness accept this as part of Tolkien's body of works. [This show] is going to be far easier to digest for the general public than taking the time to go through The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales so I just hope whatever happens it doesn't subplant the general cultural consciousness of the source material."
From Anthony:
"How much can you change Tolkien's work before it becomes something else? They may have created a wonderfully produced story. However, the rewrites and additions have made it something other than Tolkien. They should own that and give it another name. I consider it expensive fan fiction."
So those are some comments I've made on another video and here's a summation of all of that:
I think some people are confused as to how someone can respond so adversely with only "a teaser trailer" etc.

But.... Toxic fans would not give 'The LArd of the Rings' or 'The House of the Dragging' a fair chance.
My mother first read me The Hobbit and a year later LotR, this was 1979 & 1980/81 when I was 6-8yrs old. She read them to me every night for an hour before bed. A few years later when I was a teenager, I read them myself. Amazon has already ruined my most favorite and cherished childhood books. Why am I not surprised. This series will fail big time.
Not a LOTR fan, BUT I stand with the fandom. Having our most beloved stories being violated and destroyed is heartbreaking. They did that to our favorite Timelord, to our favorite star wizards, and so on. They did that to my most beloved movie of all times... Scream. The 2022 is not really a slasher, much less a Scream.
This is why I have hope this time. After all the I.P’s Hollywood destroyed we finally have one where the current fan base universally is against what they are doing, and the wounded fans of other shows are showing up as Cavalry
I don't even mind so much that people are making woke versions of beloved franchises. What I hate is it's our only option. It's woke or nothing. Wow, you've seen it already? How did you manage that? Or are you just imagining this also?
There is a good book called "Active measures" that talks about division and politics. Also one called "disinformation" which I don't think can be found anymore, but the point they make is how the entertainment industry/news is a really good target for spreading ideas in mass. Even if not all ideas stick just get some in there. That's why millionaires own news companies and can keep losing money... it's not about the money it's about spreading a message.
Actually, it will be a good reason for people to start reading again. We don't need adaptations of Tolkien when we have his writings.
I’m just surprised they didn’t give Galadriel that short hair look they give to all “strong female characters” I swear these people are a gold mine of memes, comedy material and satire lol.

If Fandoms are toxic, then they only have themselves to blame. When you poison what we love, don't expect us to lap it up like dogs and heap false praise. When this show finally airs, don't watch it; don't give it the numbers. Don't pay for it. At least wait, or yo-ho it. We need Amazon and the establishment media to feel the burn on this one.
It has become enjoyable wallowing in how awful everything is now with everyone. I have a nihilistic thrill watching these videos lol
Fore sure, it's a relief that the majority of people agree it's crap, Amazon is going to lose a fortune, blah blah blah. We also are losing because we'll never get a good tv show now. No one will dare take a chance, even though all they have to do it an actual adaptation of any source material.

Ohh just simply write their own stories and leave well established stories alone.
So far the latest season of The Orville seems pretty good. The last season of Killing Eve is terrible.
@@elsells1170 Dude! Spoiler alert! Just joking. I haven't seen this, but now I'm a bit interested.

The conceit of the writers for RoP is beyond measure.

To be honest, I really feel like this is an extremely basic concept. If something changes, your opinion of it can change too. If you loved a show, and then writers decide to make a lot of changes that you hate, then you will end up hating the new show. He should honestly know this after watching people hate GOT so insanely fast at the end.
People should stop watching these shows to send a clear message.. like dont even watch it to troll..we already kow its going to be terrible
"You have to tell new stories, not retell the old ones"
Agreed. Unfortunately no studio has the balls to tell an entirely new story not based on an existing intellectual property.
and that why i watch anime now than Hollywood XD
Look at what the talent does with old stories, I feel like the writers at universal have literally been parading around the corpse of Jurassic Park saying “Look it’s your childhood! You like that right??” for the last 7 years…
Big LOTR fan. I even wrote a research paper on Tolkien. This will be a hard pass for me. I would rather keep the image and feel of Middle Earth that I currently have in my head than taint it with this drivel.
This honestly brings tears to my eyes man. I grew up watching and rewatching the LOTR. Why ruin it? Why make it into something that no one wants. I honestly never thought that making a middle earth show was possible, and when I heard it was happening I was ready to sell any body part to watch it. But now I really appreciate the original masterpiece that Tolkien and Jackson gave us. And on release day of the new show, I will watch the original LOTR. Shame on these companies ruining precious memories that we grew up on.
its not ruined if you just skip this.
How are they ruining memories? The movies are still there the books are still there your memories are still there. You don’t have to watch this. Ignore it. How many amazing movies/music/shows come to an end with zero spin-offs or continuation? Do the same thing with LOTR and go about your life. I do not like the Disney Star Wars sequels. So I don’t watch them. I ignore them. They don’t exist to me. But there are people that actually do like them and good for them. Hope they enjoy. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a TH-cam channel of a guy who recorded audiobooks. And he did pretty awesome job with LOTR. Strictly saying, it was copyright violation, though his obvious love for the books made it easy to ignore. People who are responsible for managing Tolkien's heritage found this channel and threatened to sue him so he had to take the recordings down. Technically, they had every right to do so, but it was still disheartening that they didn't try to find some legal solution since his reading was very good. That is the question people have been asking since 2016, thou the answer is pretty simple, people who do not care about the brand wormed their way into a procession where they control the IP and they dunk on fans for fun and think they can do anything they want without consquences, they are in for a rude awakening when someone who doesn't give a dam about the activism going on and sees things clearly, not through a narrow minded point of view, gets control and sees how bad things are, they'll start throwing out the twats who bought about this mess!

Jackson did make a few changes which were controversial at the time. Giving Aragorn a significant story arc, giving Arwen a much bigger role, having the army of dead fight in the battle of Pelennor Fields, changing Faramir's encounter with Frodo etc...
But in the end it won over the fans because overall it stayed true to the story and it's themes

the main problem is franchise culture. you have "the hobbit" and the "lord of the rings" books, and the peter jackson films. that is the end of it. shakespeare did not write "king lear vs. hamlet's father". shakespeare thought: " 'king lear'. done. 'hamlet'. done. time to write new plays with new characters". shakespeare went beyond greek theatre, so people must move on from "star wars", "lord of the rings", "harry potter", and the rest.
I used to be of the mindset that "at least there's interest in the franchise/ at least they're expanding the franchise." Now I feel foolish for having thought that way. I'm tired of Trojan franchises.
The first 3 minutes of this video explains this whole farcical situation perfectly!

Its not that we don't want new things. Its that we want new things that respect the old while at the same time are high in quality and low in social activism.

It's not about telling the same story, after all that's exactly what Disney did with Force Awakens.
