  • (click HD) This video shows fire spread and flame depth during a prescribed burn in a tallgrass prairie. It demonstrates why grassfires are so dangerous and how unlikely an individual is to survive a burn over or entrapment. Due to the wide zone of superheated air in front and behind the flame front, running through this will most likely result in death. Max fuel height is only about 4 feet. Average fuel height is about 2 feet. RH is in the low 40's and wind is 6mph. That is, this is a low fuel, low wind, good RH burn. These flames are small.
Here is a new video showing an unseen danger. Low oxygen levels in front of the fire. • Low oxygen levels gene...
The Video was shot with The Fire Cam Mini HD from Fire Cam Products. This particular burn is closed and has black all around at this point. In the video I am lighting off the interior with an eye to make this video.

Excellent instructional video. Even the Forest Service people will tell you a grass fuel with ample fuel is the most dangerous wildland fire. As your video shows light fuels will flame up very fast. Things can freaky in a hurry in the event of a change in terrain or winds. BTW, is this Doane College in Nebraska?

All silliness aside, this probably wasn't hayed because it's not heavy enough and the wrong kinds of grass is being dominant. One thing that prescribed burning can accomplish is putting nutrient back the soil which encourages growth, and removing dead overburden so that more desirable species of grass can thrive. So you see, the burning will actually help.

Ive always thought doing prescribed burning would be an awesome job. Youre not only improving the habitat, but you get to burn shit all day.

Nice rip! RH must have been pretty low if your wind was only 6 mph.

Depends on what and where you are burning. You get into a wooded tract with a lot of pocosin and thick understory.....well it's still fun, just more aggravating. I think all you need to be a basic crew member is s-130, s-190, but don't hold me to that.

I would call it "someone that is to lazy to cut the grass" and not a controlled burn !.
