Arc'teryx Most OVERRATED Jacket | What to Buy Instead | Atom LT Review

  • Here is my review of the Arc'teryx Atom LT. Have use it regularly for many purposes over the past year. This included summer hiking and camping, mid-layer for snowboarding, and under my thick winter parka. It is an all-around jacket that is very popular for arc'teryx and for good reason. However, to appeal to such a large market, it sacrifices some key features that other jackets are able to deliver on. Thanks for watching, like and subscribe for more videos like these.

    I bought the Atom Hoodie (the new Atom LT) this summer. For Canadian North Atlantic winters, I must agree, it does not protect well against wind especially for longer applications. But, as a light jacket to walk through parking lots, to and from warm locations, it is sufficient even in the winter.

    I own the Atom LT and the Atom AR. I use both intermittently of course to the temperatures. Both are such great jackets, highly recommend both. They are worth the the money you pay. What's amazing over time, they still keep their look. And most of all they're so comfortable and lightweight. These will become part of your daily wardrobe, time and time again.

    I wear my Atom LT from autumn through to spring, and sometimes layer a €10 Euro fleece underneath from Decathlon for the coldest winter days (like, well below zero C), which makes more sense to me than paying a lot extra for one of their bulkier jackets. I do a lot of hiking and cycling and it's great for that, and use it for everyday wear in the city because it looks good and is extremely comfortable. I'm thinking about replacing mine (the outer has some small burn holes from a mishap at work) and might go for a Proton next time though, but it'll probably depend on what deals I can find. IMO this is a great all-rounder, perfect on it's own for milder weather, and works well as a layering piece for really cold weather.

      It's crazy to me that you can stay warm in sub-zero degrees with such a thin jacket and a cheap fleece. If it's even 5c I have to wear baselayer top/bottom, a fleece and my Atom AR if I want to stay warm outside. If it's windy on top of that I'll swap my regular pants for my Gamma MX pants.

    As someone who has been using Arcteryx products for 8 years, I have to say they have gone down hill. I have owned two Atom LTs that have both torn. One ripped after less than a year. Arcteryx merely offered to send me a patch. Arcteryx seems to have pivoted to a streetwear company since they got big. Also, if you are prepared to spend 500 dollars plus on a good insulated jacket, I would recommend Thrudark which is far better quality.

    It does what it was designed to do - breathe with activity. When a fabric breathes, it lets heat out. That transfer is not one way. To let heat out, the fabric inevitably lets external air in. That's why it does not hold up in wind or inactivity. This is perhaps my favorite spring, fall and travel jacket.

      Also, the Proton FL is very breathable so if you stood still you'd freeze compared to wearing the Atom LT.

    I own an LT and I’m confused as to why canadians wear insulation jackets without a base layer? If you understand how base a layering system works it doesn’t really make sense and it’s also kinda unhygienic (unless you’re washing your insulation layers regularly, which will inevitably degrade the insulation). I live in Scotland and it would never occur to me to throw an extra insulation jacket on over my bare torso, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of anyone doing so in my 38 years living here, but the last video I watched a dude from Canada said the same about the Proton 😂
    Edit: My only complaint is the fleece panels, your kidneys can and will get dangerously cold on a windy winters day, even with a base layer and a shell.

    I bought the Men's Atom hoody in a size small (I'm 5'7", 140 lbs) and it's disappointing compared to my Wife's Atom hoody from 5 years ago (named the Atom LT hoody at the time). I noticed instantly the material felt thinner and cheaper. The fit of the new Atom is also very boxy and I would not consider it "fitted" at all. I have an older Beta shell in size XS which I find can be tight in some spots so I ordered the Atom in size S, which turned out to be quite roomy. I definitely could have fit an XS and it still probably wouldn't be "fitted". The fit of Arc'teryx overall seems to have become boxier which is quite disappointing. I used to be a big fan of Arc'teryx gear but will have to reconsider ordering any more gear from them due to their decline in quality, unpredictable sizing and fit, and poor customer service.

    The funny thing is that people keep questioning a product's durability, but what ultimately determines a product's lifespan is people's interest in it. People get bored of their garments and move on to the next shiny new jacket way sooner than the lifespan of the jacket. If you honestly say that you will keep using the jacket as long as it functions then arcteryx is one of the best brands out there. This is such an odd review. I’m thinking you just bought the wrong jacket for your particular use case. Which in turn makes it odd you classify the jacket as overrated when in reality, it’s just not the right jacket for you.
    A lot of the alternatives you mention aren’t really even directly comparable jackets to the Atom LT. For something to be overrated there would need to be a bunch of comparable jackets that perform better under the same use cases. This review didn’t really prove that 🤷‍♂️

    All your critiques just sound like you bought the wrong jacket. I think the whole point OF the atom LT is that there's always a use specific case where there's a better option but the atom LT is "pretty good" at every one of those uses. So it's much more versatile.

    Dear Sir, I must say that your “overrated” is not correct and I can assure you that. First of all I live in Manhattan and you know that this town has all sorts of weather and temperature. It’s probably the best place in the world to test jackets since you have warm weather, cold, frigid, windy and snow. So I have the Atom LT and the Atom AR and for this winter I bough different layers. I have used the Atom LT from early spring (with just a t-shirt) to mid winter temperatures of windy 34° degrees. It all depends of what you use as midllayer and baselayer, with a beanie or not. This jacket is so versatile and once you use a good midlayer as a Patagonia R1 air, you’ll see the magic of this jacket. I use the Atom AR in colder temperatures around 32°. We are now at the second week of January and I would say that from spring until now I used 90% the LT and 10% the AR. The AR is also amazing. Besides all the effectiveness of the technical attributes you still have a nice style, doesn’t get dirty, easy to pack and satisfying zippers. Last but not least… best jacket for teens that don’t like to use jackets. It’s user friendly. Bro, with all that being said, this thing is definitely not overrated.

    • @WillFaulkner
      @WillFaulkner  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Interesting, never heard someone say Manhattan is the best spot to test outdoor performance jackets. So you’re using the atom lt with just a t-shirt at 34 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius)? You must run warm or aren’t outside very long.

    • @jpg1789
      @jpg1789 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@WillFaulkner I didn’t say that. Please read again. I said I’m using since early spring (with a T-shirt). So early spring with just a T-shirt and mid winter 34° with a good midlayer as the Patagonia R1 air and a beanie. I’m explaining the versatility of this jacket once you know how to use it and again I didn’t say Manhattan is the best place to test outdoor performance. I said “Jackets” which means not necessarily performance. Jackets in general and specially if you are looking for that one versatile piece. The broad range of weather conditions found in Manhattan makes it a great venue to test and prove that the Atom LT is a great choice.

      @@jpg1789Gotta 3rd this… I bought my Atom in 2009 and have used it everywhere from northern CA to CO and even Hawaii. If it is below freezing then yes you either should wear something heavier as a stand-alone or use as intended w/ a base layer and shell. I’ve worn it numerous times snowboarding and hiking in those conditions and never once have I thought “this thing is overrated.” On a few occasions I absolutely have been cold because I didn’t layer properly for the situation but 99% of the time I’ve been very happy w/ it. Highly versatile.

    I have this jacket as a swag from company(with team name and company logo on). Perfect fit for my Asian build but like you suggested, it’s very thin and doesn’t keep me warm even in Vancouver winter. It’s no more than a shitty windbreaker. My Salomon synthetic jacket is much better in terms of insulation and it has a lower price tag than Arc’teryx’s.

    I don't get the overrated part at all. If this clip is intended for posers, who want to put out big money for the "outdoors look," then yeah. There's better options. But that's not what this jacket was made to do. You can get the AR, now called HW, and then the conditions it's made for will totally change. It uses twice as much Coreloft. You can be static and have more warmth but if you're moving it needs to cold cold. The LT Is an active jacket. It's designed to dump heat. That makes it a better mid-layer too. And I don't understand anything about the abrasion on the fabric. Who cares? It's like a getting a rip, which happens with all jackets if you use them, and then it's tenacious tape. You said it yourself. You put it on in camp for warmth. OK. And if you're a backpacker that's what down is for. I don't think the jacket is overrated at all. Maybe the expectations of the jacket is the issue.

      I am pretty sure you made a mistake. You should have stayed longer with it, trying layers and testing in different temperatures. It maybe look baggy but that’s the intelligence of the jacket. This way you have more space to trap air and make it warm. A little like a down concept warmth. Last but not least you must tighten the cords on the hips also with this purpose to trap the air inside.
