Came for an explanation of how a self-sealing fuel tank works, came away with not only an explanation, but also a really cool, cheap, and simple experiment for my kids - thanks!
I am 55 years old and I never knew how this worked. I knew Japanese aircraft ha a weakness due to not having these self-sealing fuel tanks. Thanks for the great explanation.
Thanks for the video! Some friendly criticism: The clip you inserted at 1:15 is not of an Avenger, but of an SB2C, which was a naval dive-bomber and torpedo bomber. Notice the lack of a defensive rearward-firing turret on the underside of the aircraft, which the Avenger did feature, as well as the rounded tail of the SB2C, unlike that of the Avenger, which was more angular.
Also came for an explanation of how a self-sealing fuel tank work. Did not realize that this was uploaded by Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museums YT account. However I did immediately realize that ist must have been filmed there since I visited last year. Currently working on my masters thesis for my aerospace degree and needed an explanation for this matter. Thank you very much!
Just watched this amazing video! I happen to know this brilliant man. You can find him every day leading tours at the top of the One World Trade Center Observatory in New York City at the site of the former World Trade Center.
I think they eventually made these into bladder tanks that would collapse as it emptied. This would eliminate the fuel-air mixture at the top of the tank due to the the tank vent, so that a incendiary round would not set the fuel-air mixture on fire.
So that's where all the rubber goes. I think it was just odd that rubber is very extremely sought after in ww2. Turns out they needed it more than just for tires.
A berry concise and calmly present ed video On of the iss yes about ignition of Fuel in a military context is web a tank is pierce it is usually a tracer round that has a phosphorus tailwicg will be a source of it notion however ant firm of detonation of a volatile liguid needs the correct stoichiometry I e. Fuel to air ratio in order to start a fire ithink in this case the velocity of s tracer round will be too fast and won't have time to set off a detonation because ther will be too much fuel a little to no air to firm the right ratio for combustion
Usually, the fuel ignites outside of the fuel tank (in the air). The fire doesn't get into the tank itself, because there is not enough oxygen to cause fire or even an explosion. It's like a Bunsen burner.
so british gave this technology to US in order to face German in WW2, british has no choice German begun advancing the england so many technology including this gifted to US, so US can start produce stronger aircraft to help british/allied.. sorry for my bad english..
Not so sure about the validity of your assertion here. Check out US patent US1386791A which was filed in 1918 (some 20 years before the start of WW2) patents.google.com/patent/US1386791
Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!

this video is so underrated
This simple design saved a lot of lives.
What a brilliant invention! Thanks for the explanation.
Best example of self sealing tanks Ive ever found. Well done !!
Amazing demonstration! I've always wondered how a fuel tank seals itself, this demo was great!

Imagine doing this in your house and the police barge in at 3:38
In the US, they'd have an aneurysm like they always do when duty calls lol
1642 not as cool as 1969
Great demonstration. I am a history buff and always wondered how that self sealing system worked. Thank you!!

Was it also called a helldiver?
@@aprylrittenhouse4562 the SB2C was called the Helldiver
He meant the plane behind him, if you payed attention to the video you wouldve clearly seen that he pointed at the plane and even said the plane here
@@falkojunges5143 You need to read his comment again.
Thank you very much for the explanation !! I always wanted to know how a self-sealing tank worked.

Excellent presentation. The presenter's voice and the simple inexpensive materials used for the instruction were very motivating.

Always wondered how that worked
Thanks!
Imagine the World War 1 Airplanes had Self-Sealing Fuel Tanks Would've Been Like
That was the question that i always tought on the shower!
Thank you for the demonstration!

now i know how the self sealing fuel tank works, nice
Excellent video and demonstration. Thank you!
Thanks, I always wondered how they worked.
Im here because of war thunder and curious how it works
me too!
so this is where my dad gets his coke from, baby diapers.
Thank you! I've always wondered how tis worked.
old question of mine explained perfectly!! Thank you!
One word. Genius
I was curious about where this museum was and then I realized oh yeah I've been on this carrier.
Finally something to try at home!
Amazing. (Super-nerdy, but amazing 😉)
Also it cuts out the oxygen in the air, preventing fires from forming; if the fuel tank was hit with an incendiary bullet/cannon.
Wow learned something new I didn't know awesome
What do you call an official weapon that shoots pieces of music?
A canon canon cannon
Tony Music As a military musician of 20 years, I greatly appreciate this joke
Awsome video!

Awesome VDO mate :-)
Was looking for cleaning a seal sealing car tank lid. But found this.
"Like the avenger torpedo bomber"
*shows helldiver*
Thank you for the explanation.
really cool vid. one request could you explain how the drop tanks work on airplanes? thank you
Excellent video!
Thanks for the info 👌🚁🚁👌
Great explanation!
Thanks for this! Super!
thankyou that was interesting
Thanks that was a great explanation. Did other countries during the war, Allied or Axis have same or similar?
Awesome, thanks

get rid of the annoying background music, that by the end was dominating the whole video!
Great video, brilliant explanation but the music is a bit overbearing
meanwhile gaijin making self sealing fuel takns not seal in war thunder: 'balanced' game
How come we don’t have self-sealing tanks in cars and airliners?
this video is good.
thank you
2:53 plus it looks like aircraft fuel
nice one
came here from war thunder lol
👍👍
Albeit it only works if the fuel tank hasn't caught fire.

Thank you. So we have ww2 fuel tanks to thank for disp diapers
I came for the specific subject but can't hear/understand you talking because of the music
Are you Andy Ngo's dad?
and then it catches fire in the fueltank... and then you have a preasure increase then suddenly you no longer have a wing
no
Came here after Roman Grosjean's accident
Damn..the Background music is loud and very distracting. Can barely hear him over the music and makes it annoying to watch the video
