MOZARTONER lol lil wayne definitely has listened to a lot of hip hop, he would not be respected by other artists if he hadn't. Personally he's not my cup of tea but to become a hip hop artist you have to at very least have an idea of flow and songs to sample which comes from listening to a lot of hip hop. Just because they are mainstream artists does not mean anything, pretty much all of them started out releasing mix tapes. Even shitty rappers usually understand rap to a certain level. But I mean, most mainstream actors is what the media tries to push towards the youth and younger crowds. Plaguing their minds with the idea that smoking and drinking and hoes and money is the way to go. Because of this I took the initiative to dig crates and seek the buried gems of a time that was. Through which I realized the stark contrast between the two subgenres and left to wonder why the flamboyant appearance has taken the rap game by storm. Shit, most true hiphop heads tend to also have a rock background to them because of the "mainstream influence".

Why was Ryan ashamed about being in a metal band? He looked like he didn't want anyone to know about it. There's nothing wrong with being in a metal band...unless of course you're trying to rep yourself as something else & don't want anyone to know who you once were! I don't see why he would be embarrassed about it-influences come from everything! I think it's cool that he played metal! Maybe he's afraid of what other people will think of that when he shouldn't care...or maybe they were really bad! I guess that would be understandable-something you'd want to bury in the past!
It's possible that he just thought he was part of a "shitty metal band" or was just so past that phase of his life that it was weird thinking about it. Kind of like when people remember their emo phase or something.
I think he was in a band when he was a kid in the way a lot of us were "in bands" meaning we met in someone's basement and play shitty tabs we learned. I don't think it's anything against metal I think it's just "Oh god Nard knows the shitty music I made in high school!"
You can see each time in their faces when Nardwuar hits a nerve with one of them. Nothing to be ashamed of on the interviewees part (in my opinion), but obviously not always topics you want to bring back up in an interview. But it wouldn't be a Nardwuar interview any other way! :)

In one he asked this female comedian about squirting, he asked E40 what word he uses for pussy ("crevice" if you want to know), he asked I think it was Curren$y about his foot fetish. And those are just example off the top of my head. My guess is they just wanted to make the Nard a little uncomfortable, see how he'd react, and of course he took it in stride.
