We use those gravel bags along with recycled rubber pads on the top, then heavy tyres on the edges. Bags are great until the zipties have seen some sun and give way, usually right as you pick them up!

The handeling is better and you can overlap them. You can devide speaces with them so if it gets a hole the whole clamp wont go bad but just that one part. We had tyres and it was just shit. The watter in te tyres is the worst. They look ugly on your farm and storage is a problem too. A pallet of bags can repleace a loot of tyres. Its a bit expensive but its worth the money

They were cylinder shaped magnets. It sounded a bit unbelievable when my father explained what they were fore.

Forked out of the trailer onto a pallet on top then spread around :-O In fact it was even worse taking it off. The year we got our first tyres was like a holiday.......

Great system. I've had the pleasure of getting the obligatory soaking of minging tyre water whilst helping to cover a pit when on my summer holidays in Ireland when I was a youngfella. I still loved it though. It was a world away from London. That super heavy roller that did your clamp could be a game changer in terms of space though. By the time you're ready for second cut the pit might have dropped more than a foot.

We use a combination of gravel bags and tyres. Gravel bags in the same configuration you did and then tyres to keep the nets we use instead of green sheets on top. We switched to the gravel bags ten years ago or so. The zip ties will break after 3-4 years in the sun. We replaced the plastic ties with concrete rebar wire ties. They come with a loop in each end so you can twist them with spinner handle to tighten them. They are still in good shape after 5-6 years.
Biggest advantage for us was getting rid of the tires that hold water and are a prime breeding ground for mosquitos. Much cleaner operation than the used tires. Also the tires can add fuel to any fire that might happen on the farm.

The gravel bags work great ive got a friend that uses them and says they are mint much better than tyres but just a thought if you do use the tyres for whatever reason why don't you drill couple holes in top and bottom that way the water will drain out the tyres saves the mess and the weight of the water

Tom Love your T shirt with the #1 Farm rule........truer words have never been put in print!! Wish there was a way to get one of those here in Iowa, LOL my Normandy cows if you give them an inch they will take a mile and then some.

Tom, so great to see family coming out to help with a tough job. You all made it look easy. I can’t wait for your dads first snif of this silage next spring to see if it passes the test! That man knows his grasses. Good luck with it. P.s., also, the comment about filling t(em with sand was very smart. Maybe for your next batch of bags?

Hi Tom it will be interesting to see the results because I wasn't happy with the 2 in 1 sheet so went back to the 2 sheets more fuss but better silage

That's quite a pile of grass you have stored. Your explanation of the detriments of using the tires brought us things I'd not realized. Do you give any of your cows magnets that show signs if ingesting metal fragments? Nice crew you had helping. Many hands make the job lighter.

We got rid of our tyres and with that we got rid of the need for magnets.

Hey Tom.. do you see where 10th generation dairy man only uses the wall of the tyres.. don't hold water.. two rings per tyre.. and very easy stacked.. great job

Getting rid of the tires will help keep the mosquitos away. That is a big plus.
