Love me some Burtner! The clearest thinking, most charismatic, positive person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Just by being around him you become 10x times more motivated and excited, it's the Burtner effect. Many have experienced it and many more will! Love the show Grendys! It was sweet hearing you talk about all the JB deuce movies, so rad you know those. Such a huge part of my childhood! Now I feel all nostalgic, thanks guys.
Sick discussion! Burtner has always been leading it … ever since 7th grade when I met you and sharing Polaroid photos of jumps around your home hooked me into the crew. Your stoke for the sport has never waivered my friend. Proud of what you’ve accomplished and cultivated ❤
A few weeks or months back I made a comment on a video requesting that you guys bring on some Alaska folks. So stoked to see the Jesse Burtner episode pop up in my feed! I'm working at Hilltop in Anchorage as the snowsports school director and it made my heart happy to hear Jesse learned how to make his first turns on snowboard here through our school back in the day. This is where I made my first turns to. Love all the Think Thanks vids and Jesse's riding is dope, fun, and creative. Thanks for this one big time Bomb Hole!
Always loved the Think Thank vids! Made riding seem more accessible to those riders in areas without big resorts. Really a great mix of skill, camaraderie, and most importantly fun without having mountains or even having to go to the resorts!
Concern over criticism clogs creativity. This man has a lot to say and it speaks to the people like me who only shred for the love of the sport. Confidence is key and when you have a blockage, it can ruin your riding. Great podcast.
One of the things I wanted to do when I got into skateboarding was make it into a JB duece movie. I finally got that moment in 49th Chamber. I actually called Jesse to see if I made the cut so I could plan a trip to Anchorage for the premiere. Jesse has always been so fun and awesome to be around. Thanks for much for helping the scene and keeping the hype real! All the times you are around are so unforgettable.
Met him a long time ago with the Borderline homies in wasilla Alaska then at the Sound & Fury skate contest Seattle, and then skated when I lived in phoenix Az with Hollinger as well as Baker with Burtner (they were everywhere throwing down! He’s a legend! Love the Patrick McCarthy drop. Hope you guys get him on as well! Great podcast!
Sick ep! The convo about pro/am at the end was a good one. Neat to hear from your guys’ perspectives. From what I know skating/surfing doesn’t really have it nailed either. I think Shane O’Neill has made the best call lately with April. They basically don’t have an am or flow team. If you’re on April then “you’re on”, and you’re getting paid. If all the other company’s did the same, it would set clear expectations for both the rider and the company simultaneously. The company has to be willing to take a risk with you since you they legally would have to pay you enough to make a living. The rider also would then know what it takes to get there by seeing who’s getting on and how, and at least once they get there, they’re looked after. Anything else is just “another route to making a living as a snowboarder” which is cool too, but this would just simply the tradition which is that being pro means being on the team (more or less what used to happen before am and flow).
Listening while I scrape my summer coat of the LibTech box knife. We finally have enough man made crust for our little shit hill to open tomorrow. January 12/2023. Hard times in the Maritimes!! Cheers dudes. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Gonna start dropping a comment on every video I finish! Main takeaways - make my own list of favorite boarders 😂😂😂, mini shred vibes are sick when you cant afford to miss work due to injury, so get creative.
Love his pro helmet stance. Unpopular opinion I guess but shouldn't be, pros look stupid when not wearing helmets, comes across as way too "try hard" snowboarding hasn't been edgy for 20 years just be safe and progress.
As someone who grew up in Anchorage, JB Deuce Boarderline vids were everything.. Jesse has provided me with sooo much stoke my entire life.
