On the subject of Jane Austen not commenting on the political situation of the day, Helena Kelly makes an interesting argument in her book 'Jane Austen, the Secret Radical' that it was a dangerous time to speak openly of politics and therefore Jane did it subversively.
I highly recommend the book. I couldn't read it fast enough, I found it so fascinating.

The Waves is my favorite novel of all time, I'm so glad seeing it get some love on booktube! Similar to you, that book really required a reread for me: I didn't like it at first, and it felt like I was tasked with solving a 1000 piece puzzle but I wasn't given the picture it was gonna look like in the end. Then, after not being able to stop thinking about it for like 2 years, and knowing the basics of the plot, I was able to enjoy and adore it on the second read, allowing myself to get lost in Woolf's words. She's honestly just such a special writer, it's insane

It makes me SO happy you include The Waves among this great group of books! 💜 Yes, it definitely requires time and concentration. And rereading is always so enriching.
I read Mary Barton for the first time a few months ago so I'm looking forward to reading North & South as well.
    Thanks for this video.

Now, I haven't finished reading it yet, but Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky is SO good--I didn't expect to like it so much, but I'm taking a class about Dostoyevsky where we read his works and talk about the ideas in them and the historical context and it's all so fascinating!
I think everyone should read Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky in 2020 for sure.

@Digno ! I will! We're about to read Demons and then we're going to read The Brothers Karamazov.
Then I want to read The Idiot and his other works.
Dostoyevsky has become one of my new favorite authors.
As a writer myself, I'm learning so much about how to write just by looking at how his stories are written.

I’m currently reading north and south and it’s an incredibly touching and wonderfully written book. The age of innocence had also stayed with me since I read it over a year ago, mostly for the beautiful descriptions of high society and the little intricacies of their daily life

I have read and supremely enjoyed all the books you mentioned except the one by Tolstoy. Wharton and Gaskell are absolutely brilliant and pristine writers. I'd add Hardy, Trollope and du Maurier to the list as well as Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret. Oh, and Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray! So many wonderful Classics. I'm reading many again this year...more by Hardy, Dickens and Trollope and have added Henry James and Sheridan le Fanu.

Have you tried them, and if so, do you find them as interesting as a book you can hold in your hand? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of a "real" book versus a recorded version? Anyone know? Thanks.

North & S has an adaptation which is 1 of your favs among TV renditions. It stars a young Richard (Thorin in The Hobbit films) Armitage. Is it 1 of your favs 'cause it stars R. Armitage and u could watch HIM for hours & hours on end? Do you crush on this actor? C'mon Lucy, the truth now.
Re How Much Land.../Tolstoy. In the 21stC, it's too bad that Leo isn't around to write, How Many Billions Do Billionaires Need?, and How Many Tax Cuts and Corporate Welfare Bailouts Do Billionaires Need? Or how about Should Senators Be Able to Lie Whilst Taking An Oath in a Trial?
I think everybody should read LotR/JRRT, and Politics and the English Language/Orwell in '20.
