  • Convert Grass Lawn By Sheet Mulching
Since the yard is dominated by a grass lawn we had to find ways to smother the grass so we can increase the planting area.
What allowed us to achieve this conversion of the grass lawn is sheet mulching. Sheet mulching is key.
Specifically we used cardboard throughout the yard. Smothering grass in the areas we chose to have the garden.
We worked in a non particular sequence. There were times where we felt it best to put the trees or plants in the ground first and sheet mulch afterwards and there were places in the yard where we laid down cardboard first, put hardwood mulch down on top and let the section sit.
We developed a landscaping plan using the properties survey drawings. We laid out where the fruit tree orchard would be, where the vegetable raised beds would be. We did a lot of research. Modified the plan some more and then implemented once the picture was clearer and we were good with the plan. It’s a work in progress, we did it, so you can do it too.

So why can’t you use the cardboard with print and pictures on it ?

    • @GCGV

Using cardboard with color and print for sheet mulching can be done, following are the reasons we chose not to use them -
Cardboard with color and print often contains inks and dyes that may be laden with chemicals that can potentially leach into the soil and affect the plants.
The purpose of using cardboard in sheet mulching is to smother weeds and break down over time, providing organic matter to the soil. Cardboard with color and print may have a coating or finish that slows down decomposition. This can interfere with the natural breakdown process and may not be as effective in suppressing weeds or the grass lawn.
