  • He was tall, athletic, almost superhumanly talented and arrogantly good-looking. Australia's premier all-rounder who could win a match with bat or ball, Miller was one of Test cricket's original poster-boys and his sheer charisma took the game's popularity to a new level post WWII.

During World War II, on one flight, Miller broke away from the flying formation and returned to base late because he wanted to fly over Bonn, the birthplace of Beethoven.

Gary McDonald yeah miller was in his early 20s and only played 14 or so 1st class matches by the time he was inducted in 1941.
The don made his debut in tests in 1928. In other words, bradman was a LOT older (33 in 1941 v 22) . He served too, or did you forget that? I believe he was an officer in the army.
Miller basically was a nobody when the war started. Bradman was the captain of the test side, and a major Australian figure. And the best player ever seen. Youd send him to fight in new guinea or Nth Africa? Really??? Bradman had already done his bit for Australia, giving the nation something wonderful to cheer about and be proud of in the horrible days of the depression. And that was a real thing. Talk to some older folks. My dad remembers HIS dad talking about how it made ppl feel good when you didnt have enough work or food and no end of it in sight. But atleast The Don was smashing the bloody poms.
And as an aside, our military did NOT like sending married men with children overseas. My maternal grandfather was refused o/s service for that reason. He had to serve here at home. His younger brother was sent with 8th div. to singapore.
Easy to be snide. I dont think ANYONE at the time would have thought it smart or appropriate or rational to send a national icon to get his head blown off because...reasons.

And huge ego? So? He was and is the best batsman ever to play the game by ANY rational means of comparison.
You think keith miller didnt have a huge ego? So what? You dont get to the top in any field by being a piss weak snivelling little mouse.
      Serious case of envy.
