Yes!!! Finally someone else watching this wonderful anime!!!!!!! I have never even played Arknights, however I have been lightly obsessed with it since it's first online trailers and such. I love how they made the Doctor so androgynous. Fantastic choice.
Oripathy will be explained on the next episode, so I'll wait for the next upload But I'll add this, instead of treating the sick, countries especially Ursus prefer to execute the infected at sight. They chose to ostracize the infected.

I've been playing Arknights for two years, and honestly when this first CAME out I allready was expecting It, and the quality is really good. I wonder still how much of the Lore Will they add to this anime, but well.
I was really impressed with the animation Yostar Pictures put forward with this, considering I think this is the first production they've done as a lead studio. I know they've done things for the games Azur Lane and Arknights, and they've done in between animation for other series, but as far as I'm concerned this was really well done by them.
FTR, the "Doctor" is you as the player. There are lore reasons why the Doctor is important, but as far as the game (and the anime) goes, the Doctor commands his/her team of soldiers in battle - and even with memory loss (s)he is very good at it. Like you, I played a couple of chapters, and the gameplay isn't my cup of tea (I really like hack/slash games like Honkai Impact 3, Genshin, and PGR), but one of these days I'm probably going to get back into it and use the hell out of online resources to clear stages because I do like the story that much.
[Clarification on Doctor gender] The Doctor or Dokutah!! are gender neutral since it represent the player of the game. its up to you to think wether Doctor is a Male/Female. Despite being an insert character for the player after amnesia. they actually had their own character before amnesia or we can call them "pre-amnesia Doctor", and they take an important role in the story of Arknights.

Welcome to pretty messed up but also extremely expansive sci-fi setting overall. There's a lot of lore (a looooot) and story and world building spanning vast distances and long periods of time. Show does pretty good job at easing in into the basics of the setting tho. To start with what has been covered basically Doctor was more of a commander or tactician while Amiya is the one who runs the entire organisation on a wider scope. There's a specific leadership structure with Amiya at the top. Infected do have a dangerous element to them in that as Amiya said when the disease progresses enough they basically explode into infectious dust. But a lot of how they are viewed is just good old plain irrational fear too since how you get infected is limited. Rumors spread, misinformation spreads. You know how people were afraid to get COVID from Thai food or even beer and stuff. Guns are a rarity because they are considered expensive to manufacture due to gunpowder not being a thing. So ranged combat is mostly crossbows, bows and arts. And gun-like things if they exist usually use things other than gunpowder to fire. Due to the situation of the setting and differences from our world, some technologies are like ours, some are more advanced and some are less. And yes everyone have animal features. Usually specific animal species live in specific countries too so for example majority of Ursus citizens are bears(because it's basically Russia).

There will be a lot, I mean a *lot* of other characters, given the original of this series is a gacha game. But I'm sure you will find even more characters to your liking. The thing I like about the plot and worldbuilding is that it all actually makes sense. Things have reasons to be how they are. The bad (?) part of it, is that those reasons can be very *non* obvious. So you indeed need to ask *correct* questions to link the pieces in a full picture. Indeed bad thing though is that this season has just as much episodes and many answers still will remain under the radar for some time. Since the doctor is 'You' the player the voice is supposed to be either gender so they arent specifically female. Also all characters in this world are based off of some sort of animal be it mythic or historic. Hell ace is a snake. Youll meet a mythic creature later (wont say what youll know when you see them) and demons/devils, dragons, ect.
You should react to 40 min lore video before continuing since it covers all the basic information about the world. Anime tries to cover most of the imp parts but since it was only 8 ep prologue, a lot of lore wasn't mentioned.
I think it's totally okay to watch that lore video after season 1 Even more, I think effect will be even greater, since you already would know and be attached to some characters. And add to it the mind blow from the sheer scale of things on the whole map compared to the scale of stuff in the first season.
Releasing lore; guns do exist but in the world of Arknights gunpowder doesn't exist, so each bullet is originate based(basically magic) so each bullet is like a staff which makes them pretty expensive and such weapons are regulated by a race called sankta so people usually use swords and crossbows since it is cheaper.
It's not so much that as that because of the use of originium, using a gun requires quite a high degree of talent in the use of Arts, aside from a few that Sesa has made which are apparently capable of being used by people with no Arts potential at all. Laterano does regulate use of guns they make, but it's not strictly a Sankta thing (after all, Laterano is full of Liberi as well) and they're not the one and only source of firearms, they just have a monopoly on large-scale manufacturing. We know Victoria makes guns too, like Horn's personal howitzer.

i would say my favorite thing about this anime is the animation and the art. it looks so good, and i love the character designs as well.
