Look at his breathing and phrasing. He always has more air than needed to play any phrase. He told me personally that was the real secret!

So clean and full on the high notes. I'm a huge fan of Maynard but Doc was more precise. And yes, his breath control is amazing.

Doc was very physically fit as well. I recall reading a commentary where a gentleman was having a conversation with him right after a show, and Doc said he had just finished a 10 minute plank earlier that morning. Doc is why we see so many like Wayne Bergeron and others. Doc has always been my go-to player to listen to and resolve playing issues. A great man indeed!

Back in the early 1980s he came to the University of Tennessee for a concert and master class. All the students were asking him mundane questions about equipment and embrochure. My turn came up and I asked "how do I get your job?".
He chuckled and said "get a new wardrobe".

thats because youre comparing Doc to Grandpa Maynard. Try comparing Doc to anything Maynard did 1940-1980 and you will have a tough time.
Doc ant band weren't featured nearly enough on the Tonight Show. What a fabulous musical ensemble they were.😊❤
I don’t know whether or not Doc had Maynard’s range, but his intonation was supreme.

Just watched the PBS documentary, "It's Never Too Late", on Doc done a few years ago. Can't imagine anyone more dedicated to playing an instrument than Doc, and the workout regime that he performs in order to be able to continue to play so amazingly well into his 90's is a testament to that dedication. Definitely one of a kind, and what a gift he is to the rest of us.

I was fortunate to sit in the front row in Las Vegas back in the late 70s and see Doc perform this piece. I'll never get into a discussion about who's the best trumpet player, but if I had the ability to play like any one, it would be Doc. Thanks for posting.

Well you got to see the world's greatest trumpet player play just coming off his peak. If you had seen Maynard at any time in the 60's or before, ...WOW! So, Doc would have definitely impressed you, but not nearly as much as Maynard. Don't forget that it was Maynard that came to the rescue when Doc couldn't cut it in Charlie Barnett's orchestra!

I never realized he had that kind of range....every bit as much as Maynard Ferguson and crisper.
Well.......not really! Doc does not come close to the range and power of Maynard which is probably one reason Doc never invited Maynard on the Tonight Show! For 30 years or more Doc played on the Tonight Show, but not once ever invited the world's greatest trumpet player on. Why not? Probably was still holding a grudge from when Charlie Barnett called in Maynard to take over Doc's lead trumpet part back in the late 40's...Doc's true range was probably F's and Double G's. Everything above was not so great, nor powerful and many times out of tune.
@Doug Fernandes That was done in the studio...HELLO? It was artificially tuned and either pitched up artificially or he ate the studio mic as he played it ppp and then they jacked it up with gain!
Saw Doc at the Norfolk Philharmonic in 79'. I was in the top row further from the stage. He played Malaguena to perfection.

Saw Doc and Maynard twice each, Doc's were 50 years apart. Not sure who was better but Doc was incredible with Carson.
As a long time trumpet player who was heavily influenced mostly by Phil Driscoll’s (1980s) style, I will admit to anyone that there is none better than Doc! His technical ability while still providing that emotion is unparalleled! That tone!!! Regardless of placement on (or WAY off) the scale!!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼 🎺 🎺🎺
I would play along with Docs albums in junior high and high school to try and match his tone.
Fantastic rendition by Doc.Derek Watkins also did a great version with James Last But Maynard made this a Trumpet Masterpiece

Is Doc playing a Getzen Severinsen or was this one of his later horns after he left Getzen ? I notice that it has a third valve slide stop whereas the Getzen Severinsen never had those, of course he could have had that added . Supposedly his personal Getzen had a Bach Strad bell.

Greatest Trumpet Player of all time
Well, no, but definitely one of the greats. Rafael Mendez certainly comes to mind. Maynard Ferguson already beat Doc for lead in the Charlie Barnett Orchestra and never looked back. but yes, Doc is up there as one of the greats, but MAYNARD dusted Doc and actually is the greatest trumpet player of all time!
hehehe, no, not true: BUD BRISBOIS is the greatest executioner of extreme range especially above double high c...better than Maynard, but MAYNARD is the best trumpeter of all time! Not because of range, but because of his SOUND and raw, natural talent! Did you ever wonder why Doc NEVER had Maynard come on the Johnny Carson show? It is the same reason YOU never had John Holmes stop by in your bedroom and show your wife what it is REALLY all about. YOU GETTIN' IT NOW SON??
