      @@vulturemeat1974 but we can't completely determine color bcause within species there are also variations. There are different colors of macaws and different colors of mice. So just because one had black feathers didn't mean that they all did.

      Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus Large color variation within species is unlikely with exceptions of color changing as an individual matures or sexual dimorphism. Color variation in macaws is due to them all being different species/hybrids rather than all the different color variations coming from a single species. Macaw is just a name for all of those different species who are closely related. With mice that’s due to human selective breeding or species variation again. Even with selective breeding you usually see the same 1-3 colors just in different patterns. That said microraptor as a genus has 3 species not sure which species they actually used to find the coloration but the other two would have different colors.

    Actually, Microraptor's feathers were used not only for a flight, but for a show as well. They were mostly black and iridescent. Iridescent black feathers (like raven feathers) serve as a signaling mechanism, mostly used in courtship. Thus it would be awesome to know if there was a clear sexual dimorphism between males and females of Microraptor species. If there were, then it is quite evident that the robust black feathers were used not only for flight, but for signaling as well.

    Actually according to more recent reconstructions, _Microraptor_ more closely resembles a chubby pigeon with four wings rather than a typical toothy Dromaeosaurid with feathers. Additionally, upon microscopic analysis, the downy fibers and the rest of the soft tissue (excluding the calamus) indicates that _Microraptor_ had an iridescent dark-blue color. Though I had forgotten if this study dealt with both _Microraptor gui_ and _Microraptor zhaoianus_, or just one of the two mentioned species.

      I have been wondering to my self what the purpose of the rear wings of M. gui. I have been thinking, did it use the feathers on rear limbs as perhaps like a tailplane? I could imagine so, helping change its pitch. Or maybe even like a rudder, assisting in sudden changes in direction. It could be similar for all four winged paravians.
      Just wondering.

      Indeed I do, Luigi. As for the answer to your question, I have copied and pasted an excerpt from my own essay regarding _Archaeopteryx_ and _Microraptor_. As a note, none of these are definitive, but according to many modern Paleontologists they are likely.
      "The utilization of _A. lithographica_’s tail could be the last of caudal type of gliding. The tail feathers on Archaeopteryx lithographica and _Microraptor gui_ are analogous to the rudders of ships and boats. They help pilot and manipulate horizontal movement while flying, as well as providing stability as they depart and land. By twisting its tail, the paraves can change the x-axis value of direction when still occupied with mercurial activity. When gradually plodding to adjunct to the trunk, the caudal appendage can skew itself downwards on the y-axis, increasing drag to decrease the bird’s velocity and thus allowing it to debark. The tail consists of vanes of interlocked feathers attached to a centralized shaft; the physiology of the feathered tail was essentially designed to thrust against the air, maximizing pressured force, and when coupled with an aerodynamic morphology, generates mediocre lift. However, the only issue with this theory is if _A. lithographica_ and _M. gui_ possessed a tail that was able to produce satisfactory lift. If this is the case, the iridescent blue-black corvid sheen that predominantly the _M. gui_ specimen BMNHC PH881 occupied could have been utilized for display, as the tail plumage is vastly segregated (individually) to induce lift. In modern avians, tails can serve for alternate intents. _Picidae_ utilize their immalleable, moderately extensive tails in order to reinforce themselves to a tree. Considering the length and anatomical makeup of _Archaeopteryx lithographica_’s and _Microraptor gui_’s elongated caudal vertebra, of which overcast a commodious surface area, they might have deployed the flexible appendage as a fastening modus operandus."

    Microraptor: Microraptor (whose name means "small raptor") is an extinct genre of small teropode paravian dinosaur with four wings, lived in the lower Cretaceous, about 120 million years ago (Aptiano), of which innumerable specimens were found in Jiufotang Training, in Liaoning Province, China. The genus contains three species: the species M. zhaoianus, M. gui and M. hanqingi, although some scholars believe that the anatomical differences between them are only individual variations of the M. zhaoianus species. Cryptovolans, initially described as another four wings dinosaur, is generally considered to be synonymous with Microraptor. [1]
    Like Archaeopteryx, well-preserved Microraptor fossils provide important fossil recordings on the evolutionary relationship between birds and dinosaurs. The Microraptor had long pens that formed aerodynamic surfaces not only on the arms and tail but also on the legs. This led paleontologist Xu Xing (2003) to describe the first specimen that kept this feature as a "four-wings dinosaur" and speculate on how he could plan through all four flying arts. Subsequent studies have suggested that the Microraptor would be able to fly a beat.
    The Microraptor was among the most abundant non-avian dinosaurs of its ecosystem and the genus is represented by more fossils than any other dromaeosa. With specimens of adult specimens ranging from 42 to 83 centimeters (1.38-2.72 feet) of length, for an estimated weight of up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs), the Microraptor is one of the smallest non-avian dinosaurs known. [3] Holtz estimated the larger specimens at 90 inches (3.0 feet). [4] An even greater estimate, estimated by Benson et al. (2012) brings the Microraptor to a maximum length of 1.2 meters (3.9 feet). [5] Despite its modest size, Microraptor was among the first non-avian dinosaurs discovered with feathers and wings. Seven specimens of the species M. zhaoianus have been described in detail, and they have been able to find many details about the feathers of the animal. Unusual character among primitive birds and feathered dinosaurs, the Microraptor is one of the few bird precursors known for the long flying pens on the back limbs. The body of these animals was abundantly covered with feathers, with a small fan-shaped feather at the end of the tail (perhaps for greater stability during flight). Xu et al. (2003) also compared the longer feathers on Microraptor's head with those of Filipino Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi). The light and dark bands present on the fossilized pens of some specimens may indicate the pattern of colors the animal had alive [6] even though at least some individuals almost certainly had an iridescent black color. [7] Different anatomic characteristics found in Microraptor, such as a combination of non-serrated and partially serrated teeth and unusually long front bones, are shared with both the most primitive avian and the most primitive troodontids. The Microraptor is particularly similar to the primitive troonodin Sinovenator; in their 2002 description of two specimens of M. zhaoianus, Hwang et al. have noted that this is not particularly surprising since both Microraptor and Sinovenator are very primitive members of two closely related groups and both are close to the division of deinonychosauria between dromaeosaurids and troodontids. [6]. In March 2012, Quanguo Li's researcher his team were able to establish the exact color of the animal alive, based on the new BMNHC and PH881 samples. Analyzing fossil melanosomes (pigment cells) in fossils with the scanning electron microscope, researchers compared their arrangement with those of some modern birds. From the comparison it was established that the Microraptor possessed a black plumage of glossy color, a plumage that very much remembers that of the modern cochlea gracula, and indicating a certain iridescence. Although the researchers claim that the true function of iridescence is still unknown, it seems reasonable to conclude that the Microraptor uses its bright iridescent feathers as a form of communication or sexual recall, just like in modern birds with iridescent feathers. [7] 8]. The following cladogram shows the analysis of paleontologists Phil Senter, James I. Kirkland, Donald D. DeBlieux, Scott Madsen and Natalie Toth (2012) on microraptor phylogeny: [9]

    The transitional bird that flew like an x-wing from star wars- and apparently more recent findings suggest it really *could* flap its front wings to generate thrust, just not fast enough for a ground takeoff as opposed to a tree one. The Jurassic was truly a spectacular time for evolution, perhaps second only to the Cambrian.

    Which is possibly where gryphons came from, considering their similarity to protoceratopsians, and that descriptions of them seem to have entered Greek mythology at a similar time to when those Greeks came into contact with the Scythians, who came from an area known to contain many exposed protoceratops fossils (until they were excavated, that is).
    Some stories of gryphons apparenly describe a similar habitat to "Scythia", also.

    • @badpiggies988
      @badpiggies988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      IKR, apparently microraptor was not technically one of those early, Archaeopteryx-like “true birds” with teeth and hands. Apparently it was
      more closely related to the velociraptor, which a fairly well-researched (for the scientific knowledge of its time) dinosaur movie made just 30 years ago portrayed as a scaly lizard the size of a car when in reality it was the size of a peacock, had feathers and would have no interest in trying to eat people, cows or giant frankendinos unless it was really hungry.
      Which begs the question: What constitutes being an old-school bird or just a non-avian dinosaur?

    • @CJCroen1393
      @CJCroen1393 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biologically speaking, they were pretty much just birds with teeth, hands and long tails, so it'd probably just be a matter of how well they can compete with their modern cousins. I'd personally love to have one as a pet :3

    • @Dodoraptor4
      @Dodoraptor4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dylan Hooton most likely not, many things can make it go extinct again:
      Suffocation from the extra oxygen on earth (more oxygen than needed is also bad)
      Just dying from the competition, the world has changed a lot since then, it would have a problem against modern birds and mammals which unlike then, instead of only being prey, some are competitors and predators.
      I could see it be killed by many animals, some like the crow can be in a situation where it mistakes it for prey.
      It would have to worry from many things while nesting that it didn't have to originally.
      Time has passed, the things needed for survival have changed.
