This has been very inspiring! I am just learning how to collect and dye with lichens, and I recently found my first Dyer’s polypore! It’s very dark brown, and I can’t wait to get it in the pot to try out. I am also spinning my own wool, so I see I should have skeins ready to consecutively dye in the exhaust pot. Your directions are so clear, thank you for going to the effort to make us videos!
That purple!! So gorgeous! And yes, the hat looks a bit big, but it will be nice to be able to tuck all your hair away or wear earmuffs under. Incredible work!
Hey, great first go at colorwork!! I wonder what types of myshrooms we have over here in Australia.... Tip, if you stitch through a button inside at the top of your hat it will make your tassle more secure 🙂 I really enjoy your podcasts as you give all the information and dont get bogged down in the details 😃 Lyn
I just brought home some beautiful orange mushrooms from my kids school!!! It was growing on a picnic table. Thank you for this video! P.s. omg.... That hat is gorgeous!!!
Yay!!! Lovely to hear - I hope it helps inspire you to dye! If you’re on FB, there’s a great mushroom dye group (Mushroom and Lichen Dyers United). Lots more great info! :)
Thanks so much for the inspiration! I missed a bit, for the dyers polypore, its a 1 to 1 of the dried mushroom? Or of the original wet weight? I have some that I've dried and some that I've frozen, i was keeping track of the original wet weight and using that ratio to dye with. My experiment ended up with a soft yellow and i had thought it was because the mushroom was older, now I'm thinking it was because i didn't use enough mushrooms?
Ok! Dyers Polypore fired weight is 1:2 (50% weight of dried mushrooms to weight of dry fiber). If using fresh or frozen - that changes things, it adds about 10x weight of water. So… can we do the math… just had ice cream… have to use brain… 5:1 so 500% weight of fresh/frozen mushroom to dry fiber. Try that weight and add a splash of vinegar to pull out those bright golden tones. Keep me posted! FYI - there’s a link in the description to a video that focuses on dyers Polypore as well.
@@WildcraftDyeing Okay, that makes sense! I was using a 1 to 1 ratio but based on the wet weight so I only used 10 grams of dried mushrooms and I should have used 50, I definitely needed more mushrooms! I will need to spin a little more fibre and plan a project before I’m ready for more dyeing. I will send picts when I get there :)
Erp, hit send too soon. I spin on a drop spindle and have a lovely cottage wheel downstairs but haven’t used it a while as the kids were so little and kept playing with it. Maybe time to bring it out again. :)
I used to go to any paint store and get about 10 at a time. Now I honestly order a pack off Amazon. Assuming you’re in the US for a sec… let me see if I can get you a link. Here’s a set of 5 x 5 gallon bags for $10, you can also do a search for the 1 gallon size if you prefer: www.amazon.com/Strainer-Elastic-Opening-Filters-Gardening/dp/B08XZ2VX1X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2BM5JDBEQ7EFM&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.wliR_oC7-xkmldLYmzZ_yN0-nZM06YgU-GK3N60opZvOfCPj0p4TQIOzoPacZabgu096zeO7R4yj-tL3uJIeNrHQSoXOR43taEKkUgJVLwV7ucC0HI283lzy056-_7mMlVkVDpQGR0fgrb0yt3-TGTTB-Hh-wGSGVg-PiU20lfA8R0-MavJaL3QEDJ1i8V3KKMFQXPyIv1v9FggTgoaDSg.akBXiHrRH6kofjecfKNAgGbBX6CxC62S6M7oXs2Xyvc&dib_tag=se&keywords=paint+strainer+bags+5+gallon&qid=1719517105&sprefix=5+gallon+paint+bag%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1
I love the sock hanger. Must try to hunt one down here in oz
Nice! Real game changer for sure. Also super useful for workshops or working with fabric strips, etc.

Thank you! The mushrooms did all the work. 😂
Thanks, that was great fun, can wait to forage for mushrooms in my part of BC!
Sweet! Sending you much happy mushroom foraging magic! Depending on where you are in BC, peak dye mushrooms are October/November.

I want to know too! I'm in blue mountains nsw, where are you?
That is such a good tip!!! Given I live with three tiny velociraptors and two cats, the button tip is so good! Thank you! 😊
Random question! So is Bluey massive in Oz? Because my kids cannot get enough of it. It’s on right now. 😂 💙
Awesome ❤
Thank you! 🤗

That “fired” above should have been “dried” in case you were confused. :)

Where do you source the strainer bags you use, please?
