    a scene without music is like a black and white picture.. John fills it with colors. John gives a soul to a scene. and now the scene comes alive

    Actually not bad without the music, still felt really intense. But John still added something. HIs score emphasizes the emotion that the characters are all feeling and the tedious and painstaking battle they're having with this shark filled with successes and disappointments.

    My very first record album purchase that year -- my first album purchase ever -- was the Jaws score. It was missing quite a few of the cues but it also included concert versions of some of those cues as well. I fell in love the the variety of that score. Fugues, seafaring adventure, the famous theme, the Fourth of July prelude, etc. Those of my friends that asked me "why would you want a record of just two notes being played" missed the brilliance of john Williams' score. Later I purchased a CD of the full score including my favorite cue when the pier was torn out and the floating section turns around when the lower tones had the higher strings included in the shark theme as the piece of pier headed towards the fisherman in the water. I think I will always love this score above all others because it was my first.

    I love the movie and the music. But hearing it without music, having gone fishing a few times and knowing what it sounds like to be out in the water and not hear anything but what is going on just within your surroundings, this sounded more immersive. I felt more like I was right there.

    JW's genius is also in how detailed and subtle the moments are. For instance, at the end there, you can hear a mocking clarinet, either as if the shark were mocking the hunters, or as if we found Hooper's grimace funny... and the tragic aspect of such a chance lost. The darkness is tempered and this ambiguity is super smart. Raiders of the Lost Ark is full of these.

    I'm not the biggest Williams fan, but JAWS is a great score (I think his best). Even Jerry Goldsmith (whom I am a big fan of) said that '75 was the one year that a nominated score of his wasn't most deserving of the award.

      Kind've shows how egotistically self-serving the "auteur" theory is. These directors and actors take all the bows, but without the contributions of editing and music, their "work" is pretty lame. You think Hitchcock would be such an icon without Bernard Herrmann's music as well? Watch Psycho with the sound off,..

    • @cowboyluigi5275
      @cowboyluigi5275 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Caswell39A Not always. Even Steven Spielberg said that his movies are only half as good without the score, which is why he always comes to Williams for a new score.

    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The score for Jaws is a character in itself. Not just the dum dum dum dum. But all the themes and motifs. They underscore the characters and moments incredibly. My absolute favorite moment in the film is the HUGE orchestra swell as the shark goes by the Orca for the first time and we see how big it is. And the moment Hooper bolts down the ladder. The shark hunt starts. And the music absolutely takes off. I've seeen it a 100 times and it never fails to give me a shiver of excitement. Wonderful stuff. You KNOW you're watching a REAL movie.

    • @captainjacksparrow9715
      @captainjacksparrow9715 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Caswell39A I think it is quite wrong to say their work is lame. Also quite funny how you highlight the word work to make a mockery out of it. As far as actors go, yes they are not the most crucial aspects to a film and you can replace them quite easily with other. However disregarding a director's work is inappropriate. Film is after all a director's medium and even without the music you can clearly see how much effort has been put into a film already before the music kicks in. The only effect absence of music has is the film invokes lesser emotions. Also music has to go in a film as it is how the medium always was. So you can take out Williams and use any ordinary composer who would add in the desired musical underscores and the movie would still have mostly the same effect. Only difference is that Williams, being the master he is, certainly makes great music that may emotionally add more to a scene than an ordinary composer would, but at the end of the day the movie still comes out excellent. What a great director does to a film is much more significant compared to what a great composer adds to a film. Besides it is the director's vision that inspires and motivates the composer. However, we should celebrate all talents that make a film a film.

      roquefortfiles - As an obsessive and fanatical acolyte of Williams, I'm just here to say "thank you" for mentioning that "HUGE orchestra swell." That singular instant is also my very favorite moment in this inspired score. The score's like a mash-up of swashbuckling pirate adventure, pastoral Americana tradition, and a bit of horror. And that moment when the shark reveals itself alongside the Orca is like a religious experience, an encounter with the numinous - Williams nailed it.

  • @alantaketa6914
    @alantaketa6914 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Movies are not the same without a good music score to heighten the scene. Other past Hollywood composer such as Jerry Goldsmith and others before also had to put in a score for a scene when they are given a particular part of the completed film. Romance comedy adventure action fright. It all has to fit perfectly to that moment.

      Watch the HBO doc. on "Spielberg". The inability of the mechanical shark to work forced the use of suggestion - the water barrels - and music was there to fuel/manipulate the moods/tension. Without Williams music, would "Jaw" or Spielberg be such successes?

      I was quoting producer Zanuck, John, but you're right. Weird how these guys make up tales about production. Much like Dustin Hoffman's false claim the famous Midnight Cowboy "I'm walkin' here!" was his improvisation when a regular city cab ran a light while producer Hellman and director Schlesinger both state the driver was a hired extra and it took several takes.

      I actually experienced "Jaws" on it's first run in 1975 prior to any hype/reviews expecting another swashbuckling "Moby Dick" tale. Though 'cliche" now, the first rumblings of the "theme" immediately un-nerved and captivated us. Never have I before or since experienced such intense collective terror in a theatre. That same year, we were equally unprepared for the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which has a "score" comprised of multi-layed warped "sound effects' - no music at all. Both 'classics" show it's the manipulation of sound that has no boundaries in effectiveness if done well. (I also love "No Country,.." How much have you lost in a coin toss?)

    • @robbillington1982

      See I think the music covers or suspends the belief that the shark cannot and does not thrash about as it might do in real life. With todays technology we could engineer this into the picture without a need for music.

    • @Caswell39ADavern
      @Caswell39ADavern  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly a valid opinion, Massa. Often music intrudes/manipulates the mood/suspense too obviously. Spielberg's previous "Duel "about a murderous truck relies little on music but the roar and blaring of the truck horn provides its own score much like Hitchcock/Herrmann's variations of bird cries as 'music" in "The Birds". IMO, in "Jaws", the shark is a silent presence so needs Williams to give him a voice.
