Rick Wakeman is not just a keyboard wizard, but he is a wizard comedian as well. I'm glad I wasn't drinking my tea when he made that comment about Dr Beeching. What a great bloke!
Pleasantly surprised by this unveiling ceremony by Rick (YES) Wakeman. As a Dutch listener to Caroline as a little boy until now via the internet at my age (71) I'm still a great fan to this station. and it's wonderul 2 ships the Mi Amigo (resting now at the bottom of the sea) and that folllow up super ship Ross Revenge.
Rick Wakeman replied personally via email to a question that I'd posted on some or other forum once and I was blown away that he'd take the time and trouble to do that, lovely person.
Not only do i love Rick wakeman & Radio Caroline & have visited this railway station a few times and its 30 minutes from my house.. i didnt know about this event & am gutted i missed it. I must stop living under a rock.
So glad this came up, Rick is always interesting, and I love his interviews with rock stars like Ian Paice and the late Jon Lord. I never knew he is a train buff!
What a fantastic video. We haven’t been to Mangapps for a few years, and must take another visit. Those of us of a certain age can remember Radio Caroline, but youngsters today can have no idea of the impact they had. Before pirate radio, it was only The BBC, with the Home service, the Third programme and the light programme. The only time we heard the latest releases was on Sunday evening when Alan Freeman presented Pick of the pops on the light programme. There was no local radio whatsoever. The only other way to hear “pop” music was on Radio Luxembourg at night, which faded in and out. I remember the time they started jamming Caroline, so Caroline moved their frequency right next to the BBC light programme. That went down well. Nice to see Rick, a fellow Mason. He lives (or lived) up on the Norfolk Suffolk border near my sister. A lovely chap, always willing to help and doesn’t play the big star.
Most excellent 😎 I've listened to Radio Caroline since the 60's. Our gramaphone had North and South on the dial. I listen to them all the time now they're on 648mw 🙂
Brilliant. ! Thanks for this and great tribute both to radio Caroline , Rick , manggaps and the countless hours of the volunteers hard work for the future !
A very interesting and nostalgic presentation which I really enjoyed! I grew up with train spotting and Radio Caroline and the those days are top of my treasured memories of the 1960s. Thank you for your time in producing and sharing this. Vic
My dad listens to Radio Caroline all the time, he even as a birthday present got a tour of the Ross Revenge a few years ago, whilst me and my mother went crabbing on West Mersea Island
What a wonderful video. Being a couple of years younger than Rick I can associate with everything he said. The BBC was restricted by needle time which is why the pirate radio ships became so successful. Well done Rick, you wonderful ferroequinologist.
Brilliant video and the story behind it. There is a good point about Dr. Beeching he started the heritage and preserved railway industry.... But that's about it! Well done to all.
The Loco and I are the same age. I used to listen to my big sisters radio playing Caroline... Rick was one of my favourite musicians in the '70's... What a Tribute.... Love It .....🎉❤
I was about 13, we had just moved, I had no friends, but I did have a FM/MW radio and found Caroline. Among the incredible music I heard there, such as Rick's. Great to see him here.
Radio Caroline just never reached the North and neither did Radio Luxembourg. Monty Pythons wasn't broadcast since we had instead some very poor Working Men's Club Comedians on The Great North Road Show. That was well before the sophisticated Wheel Tappers and Shunters Social Club came out. Having lived in Southminster, Station before Burnham on Crouch, and Heybridge between Maldon and Tolleshunt D'Arcy know the area well. London Medical Students used to having Sailing Boats at Burnham. Glad to see that the NAMING of Locomotives has returned, Railway Blue Plague.
Radio Luxembourg and Caroline were stations I used to listen to over fuzzy MW. It was great. I wasn't aware Caroline was still going. I'll have to tune in. Hopefully it's not got the restricted playlist that all radio stations have these days.

Come on rick you should know it’s not a train it’s a locomotive a train is what the engine or locomotive pulls but apart from that mistake great job on the restoration
Well said Rick Wakeman. Beeching caused more damage than the Luftwaffe ! He could not even count. (He only counted revenue generated from the branch line not to the branch line. It was just one of his nasty tactics. Like doing surveys during school holidays to lower passenger numbers. Utterly evil.
Not only Dr. Beeching but his boss, Transport Minister Ernest Marples, as unscrupulous as they come, who owned a road building firm and lo and behold, wanted the railways closed down. Also a tax evader, he fled abroad when found out. Great to see the class 31 restored and named in honour of a far better 1960s icon!
Beeching simply did not understand process. The fact that he had to compartmentalise everything shows how poor his commercial skills were. Mind you they are later better today even in successful industries = SILO THINKING. Until Promotion and Pay Rise is REMOVED from HR SILO Culture = NO CHANGE. HR is NOT a positive step forward, like the EC has become a dictator without any restrictions.
Reliving heady days until Labour killed free radio for the young generation , and we ended up with a poor substitute Radio 1 did not know radio caroline was still broadcasting

A fitting tribute a lovely locomotive being named after a lovely radio station
