The devs know how big the Speedrunning community is for SM64. I'd imagine they made all these skips intentional for the skilled player to take advantage of.

It turns into a complete different game when a skilled person plays it vs when a new person plays it.

I actually learned how to do the double cappy jump during the second kingdom just messing around so I was doing a lot of skips during the whole game
I managed to be pretty skilled since the start, didn't take me long to learn the tricks because i played a lot of other 3D mario games before and was playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 on my WiiU before i got my switch so yeah

This actually was pretty useful. I mostly figured out the longer jumps myself (aside from proper timing), but I didn't really realize how useful the ground pound jump was for high jumps. Good stuff
Another thing: after a cap dive bounce you can press jump after the bounce up and before the second cap throw to get a bit more of a height boost
Toon Stink I think you might actually lose height by doing that but you gain distance. I could be wrong though.
You gain more height and about the same amount of distance as a long jump from self experience
Not really, the input delay after doing the spin will decrease your height.

At 2:50 I did triple jump > throw Cappy > Dive > wall jump > turn > throw Cappy > Dive. But doing these techniques will really help you get to hidden places which makes the exploration in this game super satisfying.

Dude, I was on seaside kingdom last night and pressed zl to shield-stop as a rolling rock was coming at me and realized I was playing the wrong game lol. I've done this in several (non melee) games, it's just muscle memory

What I NEVER see anyone doing is pressing B! When you catch Cappy, press B to do a little air-stall. The same can happen on the ground, you can press B and do a very high jump! I do it all the time in my videos and in my own time. I like to go Jump, Throw And Hold, Dive, Jump Off Cappy, B when you catch it, Throw and Hold, and Dive.
NotToxicLord It gives you distance, though. If you aren’t gaining enough distance to get to one side to another and you just need a little more, air stalls work perfectly. It’s a lifesaver. You won’t really need the momentum anyway because you’re gonna dive right afterwards.
There's also this thing called hct (homing cap throw), it's where you press x/y, shake, a/b when cappy returns. This can be done before or after a cap jump.

If you wanna go even larger distances, throw your cap, ground pound, then roll into it. It launches you very high and very far. Immediately after this, throw your cap while in the air and dive onto it. After, press B to do a little spin in the air with rainbows around you, then just dive afterwards. That's the farthest you can go in the game so far to my knowledge. How does no one know this?!
I can't roll into it, Everytime I try Cappy comes back to me,what am I doing wrong?
I tried it and it seems like the little rainbow spin stops your momentum and you can get just as far with the long jump into cappy jumps
I think it's better to do the rainbow spin after the first dive-cap-bounce instead, since it seems to cancel the momentum you gained from the initial roll-bounce-jumpp.

@@ZimpleAzDat if you're running towards a railing you need to high jump off to get to another side, you can triple jump off it, but ground pound jumping is slower as you need to stand on the railing to perform it. backwards somersault is also quicker than gp jump

Tip: do a ground pound jump then throw Cappy dive on him and throw him again you go so high you wont even need to possess a frog in the cap kingdom

I know a good and challenging jump for you NL. Go to the Steam Gardens through the warp art. then fall down to next platform. Then try jumping across to the really tall odd shaped red structure. Good Luck! I made it!!!
Can you share where this warp art you're referring to is? I'm curious and want to try this jump.
IAmBrett In the snow Kingdom. Capture the first Cloud wind enemy and fly to the other side and blow a blocked structure to the opposite side so you can get on top. There will be a picture to jump through leading you to the iron cage in the steam Gardens. From their fall down to the next platform and there you will see a tall structure toward your ship that you can somehow get to with long jumping and stuff. I took a screenshot of me standing on the structure. Sadly Nintendo didn't put any rewards or coins on it because I don't think they knew I was able to get on to it. Good luck!
Master Yoshi Everyone must have certain differences in the painting links. The painting in my Snow Kingdom actually leads to the Lake Kingdom, not the Wooded Kingdom.

This was useful, I just got the game yesterday. although you can gain a lot of momentum from doing a spin jump into ground pound, continue holding ZL or ZR and do a roll off whatever ledge you're going off of.

The most "crazy tech jumps" are "totally" cap jumps and ground pound jumps.

Alex, you gotta do that long jump near the pool In another fashion. Just long jump from the green fence along the left side. Just hop onto it and long jump from it. It gives you that extra little vitamin C that you seem to be lacking in the attempts 😄

Or you can just roll off of it by doing a ground pound, and pressing Y to get to max roll speed. The jump is straight forward from there.

9:34 you could have just get ON the railing and then long jump from there. It can be a little tricky since you don't have much space on the railing but you actually can do that
Very useful video as always! What I would've added is the command list on written form on the video, the way the game teaches you how to do certain moves in-game, it'd be really useful for the more complicated chains!

I made sure to spend extra long in the first world practising movement, and I think it paid off. Everything just feels so fluid when you get momentum going.
Edit: I got up that girder block slightly differently. You run away from it for a bit so you don't end up crashing into the wall, turn and jump to do a side flip (same height as ground pound jump) throw cappy to the wall and dive, then wall jump and dive again.

Zyzer You can hold Y to hold the cap out
There is like a half second window where you can release Y so you can dive, but you need to have Y held once you do the dive.
You don't have to hold Y the entire time. If you throw cappy by holding y and immediately do a jump dive, you hold Y DURING the dive and you'll make it everytime.

Throw Cappy with Y, X or Shake. You don’t have to hold the button.
When you dive, hold the button that you used to dive
There should be no problems, since you don’t have to hold Y when you throw Cappy.
The Rare Nintendo You do need to hold the button because that's how you keep Cappy out there. If you don't you just fall through and don't bounce off Cappy. And you do have a half second window to release Y/X to do a dive onto Cappy. I just did it to confirm it. So what am I completely wrong about again?

He didn't explain the hat jump properly. You need to press B, Press X to throw Cappy, Press ZR to ground pound and then IMMEDIATELY after hold Y.
That's how you do the cappy jump.
I tend to do an actual ground pound when I'm trying to dive, am I not fast enough, or is it not consistent if I press ZR and Y at the same time?
Lumify | Gil Your mistake is trying to press ZL and Y at the same time. You have to press ZL THEN Press and hold Y for the dive
You can also just press and hold X after ZL/ZR (with Cappy thrown out) and he'll dive.

thanks, I knew I was crap at the hat jump as it's a completely new move I'm not used to yet in a SM game, I knew I had to just practice but seeing all this other stuff has given me motorvation to just practice it to git gud. Still on my first play-through but trying really hard to exhaust as many moons as I can on each level.
Here's something to get a little bit more length in the cappy combo. Jump. Throw. Dive. Right after you do the dive and bounce on cappy, press A or B and Mario will do a little spin thing in midair, giving you a LITTLE bit more length.
Btw I only watched this to be able to do things Looygi or Mr Mario Oddysey the youtubers can. (Looygi is not spelled wrong, that's how he spelled it.)

You are missing one jump in your long jumps. If after the first hat bounce you press the jump button as Mario recovers Cappy, Mario makes and extra jump that gives you some extra air time and eight.

I actually did someone completely different for the isolated rooftop. In two player mode, on the right side of the rail, I did a helicopter jump, cappy jump, cappy jump, wall jump, throw cappy, dive.

I love that in a lot of these impossible, and almost set piece decór locations there's still often a set of invisible coins you can go collect anyways.
I cant wait to see speed runs of this game. I figured out a lot of this on my own the game sort of spells some of it out for you. I didn't know about the long wall jump, I imagine that works because in addition to killing your momentum Cappy also kills your falling speed stopping you in mid air momentarily and acting as a buffer between Mario and the wall. I wonder if people will be able to warp to later kingdoms through the painting secret areas by using some of these. I wonder if the game will softlock if you manage to reach a kingdom before you have the necessary moons
Alex, I would love to see you do a video on some of the rather hard challenges like the 100 jump rope, and 100 volleyball. I’m struggling with those, and I’m sure I’m not the only one
