  • crosstraininge... wdtc.org.au How to choose the right trials bike? Which trials should I buy? Trials bikes for beginners. Trials bikes for kids. Two stroke or four stroke trials bikes? There’s a twin-shock class for trials bikes built before about 1985. Which is the best trials bike for beginners? Brands like Oset have electric trials bikes for kids which have a decent battery life with the added advantage of being able to ride in the back yard without annoying the neighbours. The mono shock trials bikes are around 1985 and on - these have become lighter and more capable every year. Four stroke trials bikes v two stroke trials bikes! There is a wide range to choose from, it’s hard to make a mistake! Trials is mostly about rider skill and not the bike you are on so don’t stress too much about making the right choice. Classic trials bike classes exist for vintage bikes built before 1965. Some riders prefer four-strokes - the pros and cons are similar when looking at dirt bikes. In a nutshell, the advantages are a tamer engine response, usually quieter if practicing in the back yard, more engine braking, fewer engine rebuilds, no messing around with oil, and better fuel economy. If you also plan on some trail riding then four strokes are generally smoother and quieter on open trials at a consistent speed. Adults are also finding backyard practice possible now that adult-sized bikes are emerging. Electric trials bikes now have mproved battery life, weight and the addition of clutches have the electric bikes fast approaching the abilities of their petrol-driven cousins. See the trials forums for more information on various brands such as Electric Motion, Gas Gas, Oset, Beta and Mecatecno. The drawbacks are they are more expensive, slightly heavier and engine overhauls will be more expensive and time-consuming (although it takes ages to wear any trials engine out!). Some of the world’s top riders choose to ride four-strokes so it does come down to personal preference. Electric trials bikes are an interesting new development. Trials website: wdtc.org.au

    Learn to ride moto trials! Trials riding must be the best kept secret in the world of motorbikes. For some reason trials riding (or observed trials) is only big in Europe and the UK... elsewhere there are just a handful of trials clubs in each country such as Western Districts Trials club which makes these trials training vids. This introduction to trials techniques explains why trials riders are so glad they are in on the secret - we reckon you should be too! I've been into trials bikes since 1973. At 59 years old I just bought a Gas Gas TXT 300. I don't actually compete in trials as there are no clubs within 150 miles of me. I just love to play ride. Logs, small rocks, steps. I just wish trials would become more popular in America. I'd love to see more dealerships stock trials bikes

    I bought a trials bike because of your enduro cross training videos brought me over here. I'm a total knob head though and got myself a 328cc 2 stroke as my first ever trials. Oh well, guess I'll get good or die trying.

    if you intend to use a trials bike to rip up and down trails often they can over-heat quickly which can cause the engine to seize. The radiators are small compared to an enduro bike so be wary of this. So use the trials bike like it is intended. If you like ripping up and down trails or tearing up the side of mountains you should chose an enduro bike

      Or install an oil cooler along with a fan for 4 stroke bikes
      With 2 strokes you probably want to set the carb a bit rich and mix a bit of oil into the fuel if it has a seperate oil tank.

      My beta 250 trials bike ran away and seized when driving on road back from forest (WOT for a 20-30s). I cleaned the carbon off of the head, checked for no air leaks, increased squish a bit, increased main jet from 125 to 130 and started running 1.8% oil instead of manufacturer recommended 1.5%. I have also avoided extended WOT after that.

      I mean decreased squish. From 1.5mm to 1.2mm.

    Great video! Only thing I've also read is that if you are buying used to buy the newest, cleanest bike you can afford. Here in the US trials bikes are quite expensive on the used market and hold their value well after the first year or two depreciation. Except for crash damage they are pretty bullet proof but like all dirt bikes they suffer from the environment they are ridden in and from abuse (lack of preventive maintenance).

    Pretty much "spot on" Barry, thank you. As for your comment about how long a Trials motor lasts, I started competing in 1968 and have yet to rebuild a Trials motor. Currently riding Trials bike #20.

    • @crosstrainingtrials
      @crosstrainingtrials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be interesting to see how often they do need a rebuild, Clyde. In know with two stroke enduro models it's common to do a top end at around 200 hours, but they are working a fair bit harder than a trials bike...

    I found a very well maintained 75' Yamaha TY175 for $1500. The tank has some dents, and the fenders are scratched. However it starts on the first or second kick. I've been having a lot of fun on it. I've also found is that there is a small but apparently thriving cottage industry both in the US and UK keeping these bikes going, So parts are relatively easy to find. Not bad for a 45 year old bike.

      If it's any help, buying a two to four year old bike in great condition can cost you almost nothing as they lose their resale value very slowly.... ride for a year, then if you don't really like it you can get most of your money back. 😊

    So to confirm, apart from the Trials Clubs or private property, there aren't many places you can ride? Say if i have an early finish at work and a short arvo to kill, it wouldn't be like chucking my registered enduro bike in the back of the ute and driving 40 min to the Glasshouse mtns for a few hours riding?

    • @crosstrainingtrials
      @crosstrainingtrials  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yep. Although in other states like Vic and Tas you can fit a headlight and get recreational registration. There is a version of this in Qld but it doesn't apply to state forests, it's only for farmers wanting access to back roads for ag bikes or quads etc.
