Analog Heat: Elektron's most MISUNDERSTOOD box

  • The Elektron Analog Heat has been called an overpriced distortion box, but I really think it's so much more than that. There are a ton of tools for sound design tucked away under the hood, and today we're going to dive in and see what we can do with them.

The Heat Mk2 is the most sophisticated bit of kit I own I reckon. The range of applications it has is genuinely surprising, but it's the subtler sounds that it can do that really make it worth the money. It works perfectly for taming FM synthesis too

The Heat is a staple in my setup. It’s pretty much permanently hooked up to the Cue out on my Octatrack for when I want a crunchier, analog type filter that I absolutely love. Between that and my Microcosm I have everything I need to colour my tracks!

Nice setup! I’m about to pick up an OT mk1 and an AH mk1. By hooking the Heat up to the cue out of the OT, I guess you only cue the tracks you want roasted, and keep the rest out the main outs? Then combine the two in a mixer? I suppose there’s loads of ways to connect it up.

I’ve had the Heat since launch and I’ve never felt I’m getting out of it what I should. It’s the one elektron box where having the visuals of Overbridge really make things easier and make more sense, but I don’t use Overbridge!
The most use I’ve had out of it has been crunching the bejesus out of drums and using the generated harmonics to inform basslines.

With all the negativity surrounding the Heat MKII, I never really gave it any attention. I think this is a must-have. You're absolutely right; if you approach it like a distortion pedal, you're missing the main appeal. It reminds me of the Sherman Filterbank in terms of modulation.

Hmmmmm.... now you're making me wonder if I should offload my RML Jekyll n Hyde Serpa Custom box (th-cam.com/video/NBeLn0fqW2o/w-d-xo.html) and get a Heat... Not sure if they're all that comparable in terms of sound (or looks - don't tell Heat I said that), but the versatility/programmability of the Heat has so many more points pulling in its favor... Thoughts? Maybe keep JnH AND also get the Heat, or what that be redundant...? Your G.A.S. is leaking over to my place and I'm not sure I like it. **dial to High Gain circuit**

Haha I think the G.A.S. works both ways where we’re concerned sir. Those RML boxes are works of art for sure. Seems like a clear AND situation to me. 😅

Limited to working in 48Khz max. You can only use it on one track at a time or as a send FX. The need to freeze a track to unload the plug-in and apply it elsewhere. Basically, hardware sucks. It needs to be Earth shattering to impose changes on digital DAW workflow. Elektron, it is just not that good.

Well yeah it’s hardware and has limitations. That’s true for every single piece of hardware and I don’t think anyone is saying otherwise. Hardware’s value is either in the sound of it or the way one interacts with it. Both are subjective.

Ooookay mate. You have no idea what you're talking about. You are an idiot, sir. Sh.

You might like the McDSP APB series. It gives you multiple channels of analog processing with digital recall within your DAW. But it's also suuuuper pricey. Hopefully tech like that will get lower in price over the years.

Sorry mate, i thing you overdid it, even for the showcase. Choosing Microtonic as a source for drums - it is already very squeltchy and analog, driven etc. I think you would do Heat more justice with some dry drum loops, basses of all kinds, and then jump to the Iridium. Also, While I do appreciate the Overbridge, I love Oto Boum way more.

I guess you can do all that in your video huh

@@JamesonNathanJones geez no need for hostility. Appreciate your effort, just couldn’t really hear the broad range of different distortions heat offers. No need to be cheeky. I am subscribed to your channel and I love your other content, no need to be nasty.

I think your comment would be better if you didn’t start it with a passive aggressive judgement of creative choices. You went straight negative with nothing positive to say, which tends to make people less receptive to what you have to say. Just some unsolicited advice for future comments - did you like it? 😂
In all seriousness, I do take your point, but decisions have to be made to get things done. It’s absolutely impossible to please everyone, so we all have to do what we like based on our own taste.
