Hahaha... just found this and I LOVED your reaction! Every other vid I've seen, the reactor has been horrified at him shoulder-barging through the crowds and you're the only one I've seen who is actually like "why these people not getting out of his way?!" XD Great stuff!
Love this song. Brings me back to being a kid in the early 2000s UK hearing it everywhere along with other great bands. This came out late 90s but I was a little too young then.
This song featured at the end of Cruel Intentions film (Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe) it is a modern version of Dangerous Liaisons which is another good film (Glen Close, Keanu Reeves, Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer, John Malkovich) which was based on a 1782 novel. If you want to watch romance with a dark twist films, they are the ones to watch.
This got to Number 2 here in the UK Chart back in 1997. The next single 'The Drugs Don't Work' got to Number 1. They basically ruled the whole of 1997 :)
Ok now you should check out The Last Time by the Rolling Stones which is where they got that beautiful instrumental. Unfortunately they didn't ask permission first or give royalties so it was a whole thing for a while there between The Verve and The Rolling Stones. NIKE used this song in some of their ads at one point so you could have heard it there if it sounds familiar. EDIT: I should correct my original comment. It was actually sampled by the track from a symphonic version of The Rolling Stones' The Last Time, which was recorded in 1965 by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra and arranged by David Whitaker.
When I moved to London, 1985, I soon learned it was simpler to choose your path, look down and blinkered walk down it, people took note and got out the way...only thing then, was to look out for people doing the same!
The video represents the journey through life. There are bumps and sometimes confrontation. The fridge is a metaphor for a big decision that you have missed.Great tune from a good British band.
Jayy you’ve GOT to see the version of this song by the Rockin 1000 - it’s a huge group of musicians from ages like 8 to 80, all different genres and looks, that play live together in concert. It’s honestly one of the most joyful human celebrations of music that I’ve ever seen. I know you’d love it.
Sure he was! I thought the point of his bad behaviour is sometimes (metaphorically at least) you just have to plow straight through the obstacles life throws at you.
@@rwolves Dangerous Liaisons (1988) is the classic original movie, which Cruel Intentions ripped off. Only, Dangerous Liaisons has far better and Oscar-nominated (and Oscar-winning) writing, acting, directing and cinematography. Basically, Cruel Intentions is the poor man's remake of Dangerous Liaisons, remade for tweens of the MTV generation.
Only mistake the band made with this song was sampling a Rolling Stones song and having to give all royalties to Jagger and Richards but i'm glad to read that the Stones handed over the rights to the song to the lead singer in 2019 so he can get paid now. He should have never been shut out of the royalties since the lyrics were all his and were original.
For years I thought this was shot in The Caledonian Road (the Cally) in Kings Cross (London, of course), turns out it was filmed in Hoxton High Road, and having worked nearby in Shoreditch I can recognise the buildings and shops. The area hasn't changed much (don't all thank me at once for that fun fact). The one thing I always wondered, though, is how come only Richard Ashcroft had the cool gear while the rest of the band look like they got their stuff from a flea market? Perhaps they ran out of cash during filming. Also, if it was filmed today all those people bumping into Ashcroft would have been staring at their phones
There's a alternate video where Ashcroft stops walking, bumps into three men and gets beat up. And no it's not a real scenario, the people in the video are extras.
❤️💝👍✌️EDIT- first I gotta quit commenting before the reaction- 🤷🏼♀️😬 yes, that line about money.. I’m faaaaar from wealthy.. but surely know that there’s some things money cannot fix.. oh how I wish..Blessings to all-😞❤️
Richard Ashcroft, one of this people that look ugly and beautiful the same time. And of course a great voice. You should do the song Blue by The Verve.
This is still one of my favorite songs. I love the video. I feel like I’m a considerate person and I would love to just be a person that doesn’t give a fuck sometimes haha.
'Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die.' I would say that's more in line with people who live pay check to pay check to keep themselves afloat. It means they struggle all their life to stay financially stable and then they die.
You're looking mighty fine woman! I'm a 61 yr old female that has been a member for 2 yrs. You are a sweetheart. Love this song and has been on my playlist for years.

I remember when this video came out some people where saying he was a asshole in the video ? But its called a sidewalk not sidestand. When he walk over the car that was blocking the crosswalk.😂
Here's some interesting background on this song's history. Ashcroft and the Verve band had this song stolen from them for decades by the manager/lawyer of The Rolling Stones, who claimed this song, Bitter Sweet Symphony, stole a part of their song called "Brown Sugar", which when you hear the 2 parts side by side sounds like a bogus claim. But the strange part is the Rolling Stones song, Brown Sugar, had stolen part of their song from an earlier song but has never paid reparations to those original authors. Which when you listen to those two songs in comparison, sounds far more plausible that copyright theft happened. So that lawyer made tens of millions off this Verve song up until recently when a judge finally over turned that previous decision. But they lost out on tens of millions from an aggressive over zealous deceitful lawyer.
Great song. As for the video, it wS shot on Hoxton Street Market and has to be viewed as a tongue in cheek take on Massive Attack 's video of Unfinished Sympathy - note the word play - in which Shara Nelson walks down some street in LA and everyone moves out of the way for her. You should listen to Massive Attack, now that is a superb tune.
I think you might like Rolling People, one of their more recent songs. I always think this song (BsS) is a metaphor for the path of life, all all the knocks and scrapes you take on it. The only time he smiles is when the little kid whizzes past him on a bike. :)
Don’t get too worked up; it’s a music video and everyone walking down the street were actors and extras. It was directed by Walter A. stern and paid homage to the difficulty of coordinating one long edit-free shot. There’s actually an alternate video where Richard Ashcroft (lead singer) gets beaten up. It cuts to him at the end of the song where it’s night and he’s bruised and bloodied.
