The crystal didn't crack because of how much hatred he had. It cracked because he poured too much hatred into the crystal too quickly. This type of crystal is the result of his failure to control his anger and by extension, his failure at bleeding the crystal. That being said, it's not a complete failure as the crystal didn't explode and is still usable.

When Ezra, Ashoka and kanan all go to the sixth temple, Ezra finds a green lightsaber similar to kylo’s red one. It then disintegrates after activation. A few curious things about this is that if this story from the comics is to be believed, how would a Jedi have cracked their kyber crystal while maintaining the green color, or could it be that this was just an old design for some unstable kyber crystals with the same issue.
Or just simply it was one of possible old designs of the lightsaber. They didn't need them because they had cracked kyber crystals, they used because they had that style of fighting. Kylo's sword needed that design so that he could even use it.

Not a canon reply, but I always thought of it as an early transition from the protosaber. Pre-lightsabers, in legends at least, the Jedi and Sith used swords, so it would make sense that the first models of lightsabers would be designed more to be more swordlike. The problem, I imagine, is that the extra blades for the crossguard require more energy to sustain, which probably led to complications with the lightsabers internal electrical bits overheating or shorting out overtime. This would lead to the next generation of lightsaber design to remove the crossguard to extend the lifetime/stability of the weapon. Like I said, just my personal headcanon.
It was also because Kylo Ren really wasn’t fully committed to the dark side, he was just really angry but not evil. He didn’t have enough hatred to properly bleed the crystal. Because of this and the intense anger he cracked the kyber crystal.
This is one of those "we made his lightsaber look like a sword because it looks cool" and someone retrofitted a backstory to it. Just like all the lore with Vader's suit.

Also, the Siths never bleeded their own crystals, they always obtained crystals from other person's to make them bleed. Since his crystal is so in tune with him the result was more chaotic
I think he made it too powerful than red crystals when his hand is bleed. And it broke his own lightsaber. Then he made upgrade three blade lightsaber.

The difference between Vader and Kylo is that Vader knew exactly what he wanted, and Kylo had no idea what he wanted. I personally like the concept of Kylo’s immaturity, even if I don’t like the movies. Not only that, but George Lucas made it very clear from the OT that he wanted all lightsaber wielders have their own fighting style. Their fighting style reflects their personality, which is why I thought Kylo’s style fit him perfectly well.

This kind of blade was first shown on screen in Star Wars Rebels, so it’s not even a new design. When they go to the sith temple, this same type of lightsaber is seen on the floor with corpses.
While I personally don’t buy the crystal cracking from the hatred, I can believe that the broken crystal would create an unstable blade I’ve always thought of the crystals as similar to lens in physics. A correct lens would adjust for the spreading light and focus it into a singular line (like a telescope), and a cracked lens would effect the light chaotically, but still somewhat close to what was expected
Not more hatred, but rather less controlled. Charles Soule both wrote the comics where Vader and Kylo bleed their Kyber Crystals, and it shows the difference between the two.

Finn's backbone is made of adamantium. That's why he easily survived a slash by it. On the other hand, that lightsaber easily impaled Han Solo and Kylo himself because they are not made of adamantium: Han is made of old dirty nostalgia things and Kylo is made of fan fiction books for teenager girls, both of them are easily cut by lightsaber.

Canonically this kind of cross guarded sabers were common many centuries ago but nowdays almost no body know about this being Kylo one of the few that not only know about this kind of sabers but could replicate this properly

The truth was, Kylo Ren was conflicted
He was torn between his former life, the people he once cared about, and the new life he wanted in the Dark Side
In this scene, he struck down the former Master of the Knights of Ren, after he killed a Jedi that believed in Kylo until the end
Kylo still cared about some of the people on his former life, and forcibly tried killing the parts of himself that cared to be committed to the Dark Side
And that what happened to his Crystal, it cracked in relation to his inner conflict, and the blade became unstable as result
The blade itself is reference to a broken sword, as it reflects Kylo Ren’s own broken spirit, torn apart by conflict and by the Darkness and Light

The difference between Vader and Kylo is that Vader knew exactly what he wanted, and Kylo had no idea what he wanted. I personally like the concept of Kylo’s immaturity, even if I don’t like the movies. Not only that, but George Lucas made it very clear from the OT that he wanted all lightsaber wielders have their own fighting style. Their fighting style reflects their personality, which is why I thought Kylo’s style fit him perfectly well.

@@thefmehnater crossguards on normal swords are used to stop the enemy blade to damage your wrist, but kylo's lightsaber has its outlets too exposed, meaning that You can cut through it and disable that part of the lightsaber.

While I personally don’t buy the crystal cracking from the hatred, I can believe that the broken crystal would create an unstable blade
I’ve always thought of the crystals as similar to lens in physics. A correct lens would adjust for the spreading light and focus it into a singular line (like a telescope), and a cracked lens would effect the light chaotically, but still somewhat close to what was expected

Not more hatred, but rather less controlled. Charles Soule both wrote the comics where Vader and Kylo bleed their Kyber Crystals, and it shows the difference between the two.

It doesn’t protect his hands because the little nook in the center junction is just metal, not light. If anyone slid their saber into the junction, they’d cut it clean through.
Very little technical things in SW make sense, it’s a world imagined by people over 20 years ago.
