Hands down one of the most underated movies of all time. It's only true flaw was the year it came out. It has a lot of comic book jokes at a time when most people didn't know comic books. If they released this movie today it would do a lot better.
Mystery men has always been and always will be one of my most favorite movies! Whenever I watch it now, I always think to myself it really sucks they never made a sequel to it! It would've been cool if they made a second movie showing the superheroes in the future fighting other villains! But it's too late to make a sequel now I think 'cause it's already been almost twenty years since that movie came out!!
yes! finally this movie got me into superhero movies when i was a kid ive been hoping you would do a rewind on this and here it is thank you omg thank you
I don't care what any nay-sayers say about Mystery Men. It's one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies, and I always get a kick out of it whenever I watch it!
No he isnt asking why he had to take OFF the clothes. He's asking why the clothes literally fall off of him when he goes invisible. Afterall, invisibility does not make you intangible.
Geoffrey Rush was a riot in this movie. Truth be told, I would often fast-forward to the scenes he was in simply because he was so delightful to watch. The rest of the film is okay, I guess, but man, he is just so funny and so over-the-top. I cannot even begin to sing enough praise for his performance.
Man, I love this movie! I watch it at least twice a year. Now, years later, i love it even more. I get why it failed to find an audience during its initial release because comic fans were upset that it didn't resemble the book and the mainstream audience didn't recognize any of the characters and didn't know what to make of it. But I personally think this movie had great comedic timing, funny dialogue, a good plot, and a great script. In fact, now, years later I think more highly about the dialogue, script, etc than I did back then. I thought it handled the three main characters: Shoveler, Blue Raja, and Mr. Fury very well, giving us just enough insight into each one. I guess I can relate to each one. There was a time when I had to move back into my parents house and my mother was very prying. There were many jobs I worked that I hated, I was unappreciated and disrespected, and were completely dead end. I also know what it's like to have your significant other basically tell you they don't believe in you. The idea that the one person you are closest to and should support you and be by your side, telling you that you aren't anything special and they are going to leave you is very relatable. That scene actually makes me emotional more so today than it did back then. The superhero tropes were right on, especially the gag about Lance and Captain Amazing being the same person. I was even shocked that I liked Janeane Gorafalo in this movie because I don't usually like her. Watching the movie again, recently I also noticed the cinematography, which I also feel is handled very well. In a way this reminds me more of the old 80s tv show, Misfits of Science, which I also loved. In some ways I can't help but feel like this movie is the godfather to modern TV shows and movies such as Amazon's The Boys and The Tick as well as Thor Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Galaxy Quest. I think a modern remake of the Fantastic Four would benefit from similar comedy.
I love it too. There is a version I saw with all the deleted scenes, including a great one with Tom Waits chatting up an elderly lady in a nursing home. It’s obviously longer but in my opinion it’s so much better.
I know I commented already, but your comment about them thinking they can just put on a costume reminded me of Mutagen Man from the 2012 Turtles who went through the same arc, but that ended in tragedy when he tried to make himself like that since unlike these guys, he didn't realize he wasn't a hero and became a monster.
What's a Mystery Men review with some Smash Mouth - All Star? In the summer of '99 that song was everywhere. I can't wait for Blankman and Meteorman, 90s superhero wave is a fun one.
Surprised u didn't mention Eddie Izzard's role in the film, that was always very memorable to me as a teenager watching this. Tho maybe because i'm british.
ahahah still remember that movie and also my brother always laugh at the phinx's reverse analogies "he who cannot master his rage his rage becomes his master" LOL
@MomoHell5 I generally wait about two years before I do a critical analysis on Superhero Rewind, so a movie has been in the public consciousness a while. -CL
First, I love this movie. Second, why harp on the fact that the Mystery Men don't have superpowers. - Many famous superheros don't have superpowers. That is all. P.S. No mention about the name The Not So Goodie Mob, played by Goodie Mob.
Casanova Frankenstein has got to be one of the best villains ever. First of all, he's the Mandarin to Cpt Amazing's Iron Man (Obviously) but his weapon of choice is the Pinky of Death. It's a cherry tap. He's got all these gismos, a doomsday device, and so forth, but honestly, he goes for the Pinky because he doesn't take Mr. Furious seriously. Nothing more humiliating than getting taken down with 1 pinkie.
I thought is was a great, fun movie. I liked every character - good and bad. I was not looking to laugh out loud from it. I was looking to be entertained. And I was. 30 minutes too long? I have seen the deleted scenes and I would say it was about 10 minutes too short. I give it 3.5 stars out of 4 (9 out of 10 on IMDB). Great, harmless fun.
The Spleen was so obviously making fun of fart humor, to the over-the-top degree. As they did for other Superhero, and Comedy tropes. you notice there aren'tany other ones (Except for the size of Invisible Boy's wang) in the rest of the movie, because they're all encapsulated in The Spleen, who's call to action is "Pull my finger."
I justed discovered spleens hero arch type ...the teen with the cursed powers ...example SPIDER-MAN ... spleen was curse by a Gypsy woman BIG MISTAKE ...so he deals with it ,as for spidey he got bite by a radioactive spider BIG MISTAKE and he deals with it with great power, comes great responsibility ...NOW YOU GET IT HIS DRIFT?
Sorry Geekvolution. Like every other reviewer, you missed the main element: SYMBOLISM! MYSTERY MEN IS A 'STEALTH MOVIE'! The movie actually predicts 9-11 and the DOWNFALL OF AMERICA AT THE HANDS OF THE THIRD WORLD. (The Blue Rajah incinerates Captain Amazing.) Given the sheer number of clues, the film is also an ALLEGORICAL MASTERPIECE. Here's a basic list of the hidden symbology... CAPTAIN AMAZING represents AMERICA...(which is controlled by corporations whose logos are all over his suit. His super power is TECHNOLOGY and his name 'Lance Hunt' means 'Weapon Search'.) CASANOVA-FRANKENSTEIN represents the VATICAN. CASANOVA (Desire) & FRANKENSTEIN (Fear) equates to religion"s ancient dichotomy between 'Heaven & Hell'. TONY P represents PROTESTANTS. (Note that Tony P has to be persuaded to join Casanova...or the Vatican). TONY C represents CATHOLICS. DISCO - REPRESENTS ALL RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS. (Plus the large Disco Room clock reads 1:19 which is 9-11 backwards) RED EYES = COMMUNISM MR. FURIOUS = ANGRY YOUTH THE SHOVELER = THE MIDDLE WORKING CLASS LUCILLE (THE SHOVELOR'S WIFE) REPRESENTS THE WELFARE STATE. THE BLUE RAJAH = THE THIRD WORLD ('FORKS' represent Third World Hunger) THE BLUE RAJAH'S DOMINEERING MOTHER represents THE 'COLONIAL NATIONS' OF EUROPE that dominated THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, SOUTH AFRICA, SOUTH AMERICA, ETC. CASANOVA'S GANGS REPRESENT 'THE 7 DEADLY SINS' (PRIDE, LUST, GLUTTONY, ENVY, WRATH, GREED, SLOTH). PRIDE = THE FRAT BOYS (ELITISTS, THE 1%) WRATH = THE NOT-SO-GOODY-MOB...AKA- THE RAPPERS (CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS, STREET GANGS, DRUG GANGS). I loved this film. It's hilarious =-D I watched this film last night. The action is cool, the characters are hilarious,Lol. The pointless for no reason disco theme in Casanova Frankenstein's elaborate Lair, was hilarious,Lol I loved the fact they make fun of themselves and the Superhero film gernes in general,Hahaha =-D I like the characters, especially Furious, The Shoveler and The Blue Raja. For Goodness sake Jeff why do u throw a spoon for? Could,nt you throw a knife of something,Lol or that's another thing why do they call u the Blue Raja? you hardly wear any Blue at all, I see mostly Green here with Yellow flowers,LOl hilarious Golden Moment, cool color clothing on Raja =-D The Superhero tryouts were so funny, Pencil Man and my son Pencil boy,we erase crime,Hahaha =-D When You Doubt your Powers, You give Power to your doubts,a funny and clever line. Also These Mystery Men, I know what we will call ourselves, The Super squad,Lol =-D
I don't think "The Shadow" was marketed incorrectly... it was just plain garbage. And now mention of Dane Cook as The Waffler... WAFFLE MAN! The Waffler... golden crispy, bad guys are history! Also it's a shame you didn't mention Tom Waits at all who is one of the best characters in the entire film. Heller... say it with me now... Heller. Totally non-lethal but totally effective
The film is okay. I would have liked it better if it didn't have those potty jokes in there like you. I thought some parts were funny like Geoffrey Rush. It's funny how most of the other actors out shined Ben Stiller in this one where he was the main star. I would call it a guilty pleasure just like BlankMan
I wasnt too crazy about it. The first half was great introducing us to this world, but the movie just begins losing focus and just keeps on with the repetitive gags and jokes and the wide angle shots were just tiresome.
@kakuichi yeah The Shadow is garbage and whether or not you like Dane Cook (I don't like his comedy at all) I think his moment in the film stands out. It stood out when I saw it in the theaters on opening day and didn't know who he was. If you can tell me why The Shadow is a good movie I'll literally send you 100 dollars. That's how convinced I am that it's complete garbage. Go back and watch it and tell me why it's good. I bet you can't.
This was nothing more than an attempt at a douchebay hipster spoof of the superhero genre! It's just more of the 90s humor that was just to mock/put down stuff (ben stiller show, andy dick show, jeanine garofalo stand-up, etc...) Plz, next movie review, plz! (Gen13 animated flick, perhaps!??!?!) thnx
I enjoyed this when I first saw it, but its hard to watch in a single sitting now. The fart jokes no longer are as entertaining, and I'll be honest there is this elitist attitude towards firearms usage that just irks me. I know it was probably meant as a backlash against Punisher types but it might be nice to balance it with responsible citizens armed for their own protection. Easy short scene gag right there. Plus watching 70s movies makes me think guns really are a disco theme. ;)
Hands down one of the most underated movies of all time. It's only true flaw was the year it came out. It has a lot of comic book jokes at a time when most people didn't know comic books. If they released this movie today it would do a lot better.
No mentioning of Heller? Really? His ideas of non-lethal weaponry is one of my favorite parts of the film.

11:19 the frat boy in the front of the group is actually Michael Bay!
This movie is so underrated! Love it!
yes! finally this movie got me into superhero movies when i was a kid ive been hoping you would do a rewind on this and here it is thank you omg thank you
I don't care what any nay-sayers say about Mystery Men. It's one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies, and I always get a kick out of it whenever I watch it!
Mee too , I loved it !
Me too. Its one my favorite movies 😃
Not even a guilty pleasure, this is absolutely a favorite movie of mine.
Same
Invisible Boy had to take off his clothes because they wouldn't turn invisible with him.
No he isnt asking why he had to take OFF the clothes. He's asking why the clothes literally fall off of him when he goes invisible. Afterall, invisibility does not make you intangible.

I think Geoffrey Rush pretty much single-handedly lifts this film up into "so bad it's good" territory XD
Man, I love this movie! I watch it at least twice a year. Now, years later, i love it even more. I'm glad this film is a cult classic cause I think it's actually a pretty good film
You know, I was just thinking "shouldn't we get another Superhero Rewind by now?" and then this appeared on my feed. Nice timing, Captain.
Another movie similar to this is The Specials. Perhaps you can do a review of that in the future.
I never thought their would be a day, Where I can go to your channel. Then type in Ben Stiller in the search bar, and get an result.
Did Captain Amazing have super powers? I always thought he was more batman than superman and had a strength enhancing suit and gadgets.
ah I remember this... good times
Will you do Green Hornet?
Been Looking Forward to this Captain Logan. I have some questions for you though.
I hope you do Blankman as well. That was pretty funny.
YES!!! This is the review I've been waiting for.
i loved this film as a kid
When will you do the awsome Captain America movie
I just came here to say that I love Superhero Rewind. That is all.
What's a Mystery Men review with some Smash Mouth - All Star? In the summer of '99 that song was everywhere.
I can't wait for Blankman and Meteorman, 90s superhero wave is a fun one.
I also think it's ironic that the guy who played Sphinx played Shredder in the Turtle films.
whats the intro and outro music anyone?
Have you done Tropic Thunder review yet?
with that cast you have to wonder if released Today , would it have done better at the boxoffice ?
Surprised u didn't mention Eddie Izzard's role in the film, that was always very memorable to me as a teenager watching this. Tho maybe because i'm british.
when are you doing steel
can you do kick ass??
i cant wait till the next vid!
ahahah still remember that movie and also my brother always laugh at the phinx's reverse analogies
"he who cannot master his rage his rage becomes his master" LOL
@MomoHell5 I generally wait about two years before I do a critical analysis on Superhero Rewind, so a movie has been in the public consciousness a while.

9:57-10:25/10:25-10:51/11:11-11:29.; What are the jokes/gags, exactly?... I think I missed something.
First, I love this movie.
Second, why harp on the fact that the Mystery Men don't have superpowers. - Many famous superheros don't have superpowers.
That is all.
P.S. No mention about the name The Not So Goodie Mob, played by Goodie Mob.
And to think that this movie kinda inspired Kick - Ass 2
there was also a lot of product placement in the movie too.

For my money: Nolan is the Messiah of this genre.
Awesome review!!!
"Casanova Frankenstein" XDXDXDXDXDXDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
@Geekvolution Hey Captain Logan,
Big fan of your reviews, I'd like to make a request here. Can you Review All Star Superman. Thanks!!!!
But I love The Spleen!
@Reborn8303 Oh, I absolutely think it would have.
-CL
hey... thank you so much.... appreciate it...
oh next time...that will be fun

Fun Fact: Micheal Bay was one of the Frat-Boys. And dies. *deep breath* So soothing.
Yay Captain America, just in time for the new movie this weekend!
Also, Michael Bay has a cameo as one of the Frat Boy gang members.
I thought is was a great, fun movie. I liked every character - good and bad.
I was not looking to laugh out loud from it. I was looking to be entertained. And I was.

C-Lo Green was one of the gangsters, and Dane Cook was one of the wanna-be superheroes at the auditions.
ow your doing the old captain amaricia movie.... reviewing every superhero movie can have it's down fall
Sorry Geekvolution. Like every other reviewer, you missed the main element: SYMBOLISM!
