I had a Jewish Music shop in Los Angeles, "Hatikvah Music". One day one of the Burton Sisters came into the shop. She was shocked that I knew who she was.
Claire Barry was a very dear friend, told me some wonderful stories of the Catskills Era.

The Barry Sisters were family friends, and I knew them when they were at their peak. I remember Myrna's husband, Manny, singing "My Funny Valentine" in our living room, and they came to visit us at the house in the country in the summers when I was 10 or so. Nice to hear them sing again.

He was born in Bohemia, in Jewish family, who were speaking austrisch. Now he is proclaimed as a czech writer, but writing in german. And those times, jidiš was their language, therefore i suppose, it is realy relevant. Greetings from Prague with the Golem behind my beck.

Franz Kafka was born into a family of merchant-class Jews in 19th century Prague. His background (ancestry) might have been Yiddish-speaking (jidiš / Jiddisch) in the past, but he was educated in and wrote in 'High German' (so, standard German). He had to make a conscious effort to reconnect himself with his Yiddish past, and struggled with it (like many Jews at the time in central Europe). Historians debate over his knowledge of Czech: it is clear that he was not ignorant of Czech, but neither was it his first language. German was his main language.

Рекомендую найти песню и прослушать, Вы все прочувствуете сами, вне всякого сомнения!
Также, случайно, увидел/запись 2014 год/ выступления 15-летней фигуристки Юлии Липницкой с музыкой американского композитора Джона Таунера Уильямса, пятикратного лауреата премии ,, Оскар,,-в том числе, за музыку к фильму ,, Список Шиндлера,,/1993 год/режиссер Стивен Спилберг!
Полагаю: Юлия прожила свое выступление с первого до последнего музыкального такта!
Вся программа, с моей точки зрения, пронизана мыслью из Талмуда:,, Тот, кто спасает одну жизнь, спасает целый мир,,!

He became very close friends with one of the actors, Isaac Löwy, "whom I would admire in the dust," who spent hours telling him about his childhood and young adulthood in Poland ). Franz became so enamored of the theater that on February 18, 1912 he gave a lecture called "Speech on the Yiddish tongue," described as an "elegant and charming lecture delivered by Dr. Kafka" in the Prague Jewish newspaper.

Claire and Mirna grew up in a Yiddish speaking immigrant home in the Bronx, the daughters of a Russian father and a Viennese mother.
It is a sad song; "where is the little street, where is the home, where is the boy that I love? there is the little street, there is the home, there is the boy that I love. Into the house (but) the pain is so great-- a different girl is sitting on his threshold; into the house, far away from the wind, (not sure how to translate this line) for me and my beloved all is over....."ladada, ladadi...

I love this! The music has an Italian feel, but when the ladies sing it brings on a new life.
I just played this for my mother, who is 92. She started singing it, not these Yiddish lyrics, although she is fluent in Yiddish, but in Russian. She translated for me, and they are different. Her mother, who came to North America from Russia around 1907 (age 16), taught her 4 daughters Yiddish & Russian songs. Logic would say Secunda borrowed an old Russian melody. There was always a back-&-forth, such as Russians putting Russian lyrics to the Yiddish "Tumbalalaika" song. Similarly, Woody Guthrie wrote many of his lyrics to folk melodies. Even composers of classical music have borrowed folk melodies (and even liturgical ones, e.g., Kol Nidrei, the Yom Kippur prayer).
Yes, it's a famous Russian song "крутится вертится шар голубой" (the blue ball is turning and twisting".... where's the street, where's the building, where's the girl I'm in love with). It was sung by the main character in a remarkable 1934 film "The youth of Maxim" and became very popular in the whole of the USSR. The song probably originated in the 19th century in southern Russia.
I like the Barry sisters' version, so nostalgic, romantic and deeply saddening...where's my youth? where's the girl, my first love? our life is nothing but dust in the wind..thank you for the video.

Thank, Ivan. I just played the video (would her name transliterate Galina Homchik?) Lovely. You happened to give me this info while the memorial candle still burns for my grandmother. Also yesterday was Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance day). Adds to the nostalgia and sadness of the song: lost loved ones, lost worlds. Two of my grandparents were virtually the sole survivors of their families, only because they came to America before Hitler's horror descended upon Europe.

Yes, Galina Homchik. She says in the beginning that this song was and is loved by all peoples of Russia (I'd say most of all in southwestern Russia), and that its origins are unknown; also she mentions that for this reason she would sing it in different languages. The original full lyrics were in Russian, it's quite a long song and quite light in the meaning, about the young officer courting a young lady (it's also on youtube). At the time it was not viewed as a serious thing, rather something like pop music today (which hard-working folks wanted to play and sing for relaxation ). But to us it sounds differently, especially when the Barrys and other singers modified the text and the general nostalgic mood of this beautiful melody. May God bless all of us.

Впервые она зазвучала в кинофильме "Юность Максима", где ее пел актер Борис Чирков, исполнивший роль молодого рабочего парня Максима. Откуда и как оказалась песня в фильме несколько непонятно. Слова совпадают с теми, что в 1912 году опубликовал еврейский фольклорист Иехуда Лейб Кахан в своей книге "Народные песни на языке идиш с мелодиями", откуда взялась музыка доподлинно не известно. Но до выхода фильма это была еврейская песня. В 1926 году ее пели в спектакле на идиш "Маша и Маргарита", который шел в театре на 2-й Авеню на Манхеттене.
