Deyell actually kind of did him a favor. Miles was terrified of the execution, because it had a specific date. This one caught him by surprise.

MrClean3381 honestly, I think he was just lamenting the fact that now he was all alone. It’s seriously gotta be spooky being the only guy on death row.
Another thing I noticed: Miles was the only guy on death row this season not to have been missed by anybody. Shirley, Moses, and Ginzburg all had someone who was saddened by their deaths, but not Miles. He drove everybody away, and died with no one to mourn him. I think that was the point of his self-portrait: to have company with the only person he could stand-himself.

One of the most memorable, and darkly ironic scenes, in all of Oz. Not only was Miles killed while engaged in the one thing that could take his mind off his approaching execution, his cellmate's hand went right through the mural's mouth, which is what got Miles killed in the first place.

    • @SuperN1ntendoChalmers

Schillinger was so afraid of the demon he created in Breecher that he tried to hire other inmates to kill him but they were to afraid of what he became. The funny thing at 2:54 is that Moses ain’t offering to sympathy to Miles, he’s empathizing with him. Of course, who can expect Miles to know the difference between sympathy and empathy?

    • @Sernival

Thats a good point, empathy is often held as a virtue but it's a self-centric one that has an undertone of divisiveness, in the sense "this person doesnt know what I go through so theyre not my friend", sympathy would be the more selfless virtue

The judge says to the prisoner that he will be executed next week and that the exact day is to be kept secret, promising that the prisoner will be taken by surprise. The prisoner is taken back to his cell and starts to think about it, reasoning to himself he concludes that the execution cant take place on a sunday since it would be the last day of the week and thus the only possible day he could be executed. Then from that point he reasons that saturday too must be discluded for the same reasons. Working backwards every day of the next week could not be the day of his execution, thus he realized that he couldn't be executed at all without the judge breaking his promise and thus couldn't be executed at all. Happily he waited in his cell until, on the following wednsday he was taken from his cell and hung from his neck until he was dead. The execution came as a total shock to him.
